It is here forever, unless it ends up being bumped every day, to either keep it on the first page, or to just say something non-significant about the clash.

"After the clash's Joe Strummer had heard them preforming. The Specials were invited to be the souport act on the Clashs No Patrole UK tour which gave them national exposure for a brieft period they even shared the Clash's own management.

Long Shadow may be the best song Joe ever did, with or without El Clash Combo.

(I know I'm not Steve, but) In ours they have JS and the Meskies under the punk/ska section. Unfortuneatly, they have about 7 streetcores and none of the others.

While we're talking about Clash albums, is the London Calling Legacy thing worth it?

CombatRock
07-21-2005, 03:16 PM
eh, if you a die hard clash fan yes. basically its London Calling, Vanilla Tapes (tracks they found in Micks basement, they were like practice runs), Last Testament (a dvd about London Calling) and a big insert with essays and photos. i have it i enjoy it, its more of a collectors piece though.

guns_of_brixton
07-21-2005, 04:56 PM
Do you already have the original London Calling? If not, just get the single cd. The Armagideon Times (fanzine thing that the Clash made) is alot of fun to check out though, it comes with the Legacy.

Edit: and Strummerville, you should get Sandinista!, its got alot of way-out-there stuff, as well as some great f.ucking songs.

Yea (sketchy) Joe died of mansex.

Strummer had a heart attack.

sketchyjoe
07-21-2005, 07:35 PM
Caused by AIDS and buttsex.

Basically, when HIV is transmitted through anal intercourse between two males several process occur. During the asymptomatic stage, billions of HIV particles are produced every day accompanied by a decline, at variable rates, in the number of CD4+ T cells. The virus is not only present in the blood, but also throughout the body, particularly in the lymph nodes, brain, and genital secretions. During this stage, the body's immune system is actively trying to fight off the HIV infection but, for the vast majority of infected people who are not receiving treatment, the immune response is insufficient as the virus directly attacks cells of the immune system and mutates rapidly into AIDS. Many who are infected experience a seroconversion flu during this stage as their bodies change from seronegative to seropositive leading to a massive pulmonary overload or "heart attack" such as in the case of Joe Strummer.

07-21-2005, 10:53 PM
actually hiv can pass though any form of liquid swapping
that's a bit too vague. if i trade a kid a mountain dew for a dr. pepper, i'm not at risk to catch HIV. there are only four fluids that transmit HIV:
blood
semen
vaginal fluid
breast milk

no other fluids transmit HIV whatsoever. unless you are taking one of these fluids into your body in some way (through an oriface or open sore/wound of any kind), you cannot catch HIV.

I got From Here To Eternity for about £7. I think it's the Clash On Broadway that costs more. I could be wrong though.

guns_of_brixton

Joe Strummer wasn't gay and didn't have AIDS.

From Here to Eternity is very good. It sounds so good because most of the performances didn't feature Terry Chimes, and they must've done some studio tricks to get it to sound better, like the sound levels. On a bootleg I've got it has the EXACT same Complete Control but the guitar is quieter.

This thread is a good laugh. I'm learning guitar at the moment and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to recommend a Clash song to start learning. I'm lazy and haven't trawled through that recomendations thread yet. I've learnt the intro to 'Gates Of The West'. I'm still quite bad as you can see. I couldn't even manage 'Should I Stay...'.

CombatRock

NO. That ain't how it goes. Don't disrespect Mick Jones like that, he taught Paul how to play bass.

E-0--0-----
B-0--2-----
G-1--2--4--
D-2--2--4--

And now, I will explain how awesome From Here To Eternity is. I'll point out several awesome parts. On Complete Control, the entire song is f.ucking sweet, but the base part is the "total - C-O-N, CONTROL!" bit. It goes like this:

Paul: Total..
Joe: WHAAA?!?
Mick and Paul (loudly): C-O-N, CONTROL!!

I will have more installments on its greatness.

Installment Deux

/turns on mp3 player, goes to teh Clash

The Magnificent Seven

The first three and a half minutes of the song are much like the Sandinista! version. After Joe goes "news flash, from the Clash!" then Topper and Paulo do the drumroll / cool bass part thing, it's just Topper going at it on the hi-hat and Paulo throwing in a little bass part. Now this is what Joe says:

Well don't you stand there going over to sleep. I know this song is... 20 minuites long and I know this song is f.ucking long...... Well where is magnificence? They said it was out here somewhere, out on these roads. Just a liiiiiiitttle m-m-m-m-magn- SHUT UP YOU! HEY! Who you tryin' to kid?!?! Don't go lookin' for that, kid!

Now it is just Paulo's bass and Joe's voice. This is the best part.

Don't you know that magnificence is strictly out of order, and truly reserved for the upper class!? Why don't you get bored, go back to school, and don't ask for any of this magnificence!

But Sir! Just a little bit! Oh Sir just a little bit?!?! It makes me feel like I'm ALIVE!

mm-m-m-mm-m-m-m-maaaaag MAAAAAaAGNIFICENCE!! AAAAAAAAHH!

DUDE! Listen to what the song's about. The daily 9 to 5, same s'hit different day, and the oppression of the working class by greedy bastards.

Installment Three will either be White Man In Hammersmith or Straight to Hell. Straight to Hell is 7 minutes long and has tons of great parts, so I may save it for the final installment.

Mick is a very good guitarist, he doesn't get hardly the credit he deserves. He taught Paul how to play bass and arranged most of the music that the Clash did. If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't be playing guitar now.

I have 2 clash books. Complete clash and The legend of Joe Strummer. In the legend of joe strummer, Joe says that Mick was a great tunesmith, and joe wrote the lyrics. Mick did a great job in the clash in terms of creating awsome powerful sounds and Pauls basslines are excellent

In 8th grade art class, Me, my friend Rocco, and my friend Tony made a computer cartoon set to the music of Rock the Casbah. It was called Willie Wong's Day out, and I tell you it was the f'ucking sweetest thing ever. It was about a weiner dog who was kiddnapped by a Chinese Restaraunt and the ALMOST cooked him, but as Joe screams "The jet pilots waaaaiiilllled!" he busts free. I swear to god this thing exists.

Capital Radio two is a little different from Capitial Radio. The lyrics are the same but there 2 different recordrings. The biggest difference is in the beginning of Capital Radio Two there is a accoustic riff that plays for about 20 seconds then BLASTS into the song.

Yea, and in the second part of Capital Radio Two there's a funny conversation between Mick and Joe.

Mick: Yea, what?!?!
Joe: Hey listen, I been thinkin'... we'll never get on the radio like this, you know that? Now, I been studyin' the charts, with my mind, and my 'magination... and I can see it all now... the drummer's in the box office... and he's countin' all the money!

(BIG EXPLOSION IN THE MUSIC)

Later, maybe tonight I will do another installation of From here to Eternty's greatness, because the Capital Radio on there is sweet. Joe starts talking about Sham 69.

Combat rock featurs songs like "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock The Casbah" which are songs that everyone knows.

But Combat rock doesnt come CLOSE to London Calling. London Calling was a master piece. SO Influentual. It was ranked number 8 by rolling stone magazine in there 500 Greatest albums of all time. And VH1 has London Calling listed at number 56 in the greatest songs of the past 25 years.

Combat rock is cool, But London Calling is the clash at there best.

Because VH1 and Rolling Stone magazine are the definitive punk rock source. Their self-titled album was the most influential if you ask me. Influence is what it means to the person, not some mainstream magazine. I don't know much about The Clash except that S/T was very influential for a lot of bands. That and Give 'em Enough Rope was incredible.

Well popular certainly doesn't mean the best. London Calling is easily the best. Combat Rock is probably the worst.

London Calling was easily the best album they had on the Rolling Stone list. It owns the hell out of the Beatles and Beach Boys or whoever else was ahead of it.

I disagree that the ST was more influential, just the fact that at the time lots of punk records were comming out and what not, but when London Calling came out, none of the punk bands were doing the sounds of that record.

I liked the painting that was posted a couple of pages back. Joe looks like he's having bowel problems though.

I want to make my own Clash t-shirts, seen as the ones you can get commercially are **** sizes and just crap.

Any ideas on how I do this? Paint's, stencils etc.?

CombatRock

I have made clash tee. Get the stencils lay them out how you want then cover everything but the stencils. Then use spray paint, thats why i used and it turned out really good.

Im, not sure really, my friend gave me a stencil thing, all it was, was a carboard piece of paper with letters on it and you just tear the letters you need off. IM sure you can get them at a walmart or hobby lobby.

Just a quick question...
Do you think that Joe Strummer was really as tough as he says he was?
I don't mean no offence, I love the Clash, but Strummer doesn't actually seem that badarse to me... I dunno, perhaps one of you lot know his life story better?

Part of Let Fury Have the Hour went something like: "Joe Strummer, the thuggish-looking lead singer of the Clash."

I agree that strummer did some tough stuff. but stopping people spitting at his shows and the whole rock against racism thing, which flew in the face of the nihilstic/hedonistic side of punk which really floats my boat. I don't know, he just seems kinda white middle class kid like me in some of his lyrics

I bought Passion Is A Fashion and I'm not sure if I like it. It's really interesting and there's a lot of good anecdotes, but there's way to much "maybe" and "we can assume that" and "they possibly were".

There's something really interesting in the chapter about Joe:
Joe Strummer vs John Mellor.

And Sean, have you finished LFHTH?

Bernie Rhodes wrote some of it, there was no Mick or Topper, and Joe wasn't Joe for that period in time.

The Mescaleros are almost as great as The Clash.

Sean: I also loved Greatness From Garageland a lot. And the chapter called Here's Joe Strummer. The interview with Joe in Clash Of The Titan is good too (when the journalists at the party ask him where he got his shirt  )
