Capitial Radio One is a very political song

06-22-2005, 12:59 PM
does anyone have the cd of clash's Cut the crap? whats your opinion of it? My friend has it he says it isn't good
I hear it's pretty bad. Joe Strummer didn't even consider it to be called a Clash album.
white_riot
06-22-2005, 04:15 PM
The Clash had many political songs and very good songs may I add, that taught me alot of things and made me a far more knowledgeable and better person at that.
guns_of_brixton
06-22-2005, 09:19 PM
The US version doesn't flow very well at all. It should end with Complete Control.
The most political Clash song is either The Magnificent Seven or Clampdown. There are probably others that I'm forgetting or aren't as good.

I can pretty much play any Clash song I set my mind on. But then again I'm a drummer and thier a punk band, so it's not very hard. Especially Clampdown.

Garageland is the perfect finisher to their s/t.
That's one of the few things the US got right with the track order.

it's too good. I can't believe it was Joe's last album ever. It's sad...It's so great that for a while I was listening to Streetcore everyday and it was pretty much the only music I could stand...but the sad thing is that I got sick of it after 2 or 3 weeks. Global is a great cd too

I would've liked it to end with Complete Control, but I still like Garageland.
I hate how the US one starts with Clash City Rockers.

And I was just listening to that album and I decided that G arageland is a much better finisher.

Ya, I always thought that too. But I can't think of the album ending with anything else.

Play a show when I go to chicago later in July so I can here it.
A while back I was going to suggest that we do something like the pop punk forum or the ac/dc thread in R&M and pick a clash song to cover. And then we figure who does bass and guitar and such, then we record it and upload it on YSI and someone puts them all together to make it complete.
But then I realized that those have never turned out good, and ours would probably be horrible

I thought we could have some kind of competition about the best Clash-tunes from each album. I know it's (extremly) hard, but it'll give a hint about what some big fans of the Clash consider as their best music anyway. My idea is to list five songs from each album (you don't have to pick every album, but you have to pick five songs from those album you pick). When everyone who wants to join this have posted their list, I'll try to bring together a list with all points. D'amn, I'm ambitious! :]
The Clash - The Clash (1977, UK and US version)
5p: White Man (In Hammersmith Palais)
4p: White Riot
3p: Hate And War
2p: I'm So Bored With The USA
1p: London's Burning
The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope (1978)
5p: Stay Free
4p: Cheapskates
3p: English Civil War
2p: All The Young Punks (New Boots And Contracts)
1p: Safe European Home
The Clash - London Calling (1979)
5p: The Card Cheat
4p: The Guns Of Brixton
3p: Death Or Glory
2p: Spanish Bombs
1p: Koka Kola
The Clash - Sandinista! (1980)
5p: Something About England
4p: The Magnificent Seven
3p: Somebody Got Murdered
2p: Ivan Meets GI Joe
1p: Police On My Back
The Clash - Combat Rock (1982)
5p: Straight To Hell
4p: Know Your Rights
3p: Ghetto Defendent
2p: Inoculated City
1p: Rock The Casbah
You can use this. It'll maybe help you.

And for the list of the 5 best from each album, is the #1 the best? Thats how I'll do it, in a little while.

Except, I'm the drummer and I've only played drums for a day. I've played bass for more than a year and I'm going to teach my best friend basslines I wrote so he can play bass. Then I'm going to get one of my friends who used to be in a ska band until he quit to play guitar. And a black guy to sing. I haven't told the guitarist or the black guy about the band yet, but at least I have a plan.

Hmm, a lot of you made fun of Bono earlier. But shortly before Joe's death he was working with Bono on a song for a Nelson Mandela-campaign against AIDS in Africa. The song they co-wrote was called "46664", but as far as I know it has never been released anything from it. Joe had been scheduled to play a fundraising concert on Robben Island in February 2003.
Sure, you can't compare Bono with Joe but I don't think Joe would have liked seeing what you wrote about Bono. I think Bono deserves some kind of respect. He has often honoured Joe as one of the world's greatest ever. And, according to Bono himself, if he wouldn't have seen The Clash as a 17-year-old in Dublin, he probably wouldn't have been doing music. And if you've seen pictures from Clash-shows, you have probably seen that they often used pictures of riots and wars and such - which U2 are, according to themself, very inspired by (and used on their concerts too).
Hmm, maybe this wasn't interesting at all but I didn't know what to write.

Everybody knows I love Joe and everything he did. I have a LOT of respect for him...Okay, maybe he thought Bono was cool. But my love for Joe Strummer has a limit. Yeah, you heard me. Bono sucks no matter how much Joe and him worked together. Yeah, Bono said that without The Clash..blah blah blah blah. But he said the same about The Ramones when Johnny Ramone died. Maybe he's just trying to sound cool and punk rock?
And when you think about it, I'm sure there's a lot of bands (and better bands) who can say that without The Clash, they wouldn't exist. A lot of bands give to charity too. But they don't want to impress people with it.
Bono thinks that talking about justice and charity when you travel in a private jet is cool...
"I don't think Joe would have liked seeing what you wrote about Bono"
I don't think Jow would have liked seeing what we wrote about him in this thread. Too much attention and admiration and respect. He was too humble to accept it.
"And, according to Bono himself, if he wouldn't have seen The Clash as a 17-year-old in Dublin, he probably wouldn't have been doing music."

That movie is amazing. I like the part when they were shooting the birds with shotguns, and come to find out they were an extremely expensive breed. Their owner wasn't too happy.
But yeah i really enjoy my movie, let my teacher borrow it, I still don't have it back. I don't know if I ever will...

I'm not sure if they said it in the movie but the bird shooting made them write Guns on the Roof.
My favorite part is when they play the Guns of Brixton at Bond's in NYC and you see Joe playing bass.

On the "Punk:Attitude" documentary, one lady said she didn't think paul was in the band at first becuase he was "too handsome"
And they interviwed Mick for it. It was horribly ugly

They all had their moments of hotness. For Joe, it was after he got his teeth fixed.
I've found this yesterday, and it's quite interesting.

Oh man, you have triggered my DKM knowledge. I hate when I have to do this...
Ken Casey learned bass to play in this band(or very close before they started) and he learned by playing along to the clash record. So at practice, when deciding what songs to play, they would all say "what songs can Ken play, cause he's the worst!" and since Ken learned by playing along to the Clash, he could play those songs. They started off doing a bunch of covers, but I forget what their original name was.
More proof I'm a DKM geek.

That's it, well at least on record.
On the singles collection they also cover "I've Had Enough" by Slapshot, and that song is on a tribute comp, which my friends band is also on.

I have like 5 other versions of Junco Parter on my computer that I can upload if ya want, but I've heard YSI hasn't been working right.
James Booker (original guy who did it)
Mescaleros (live version, f'ucking awesome with great sound quality, Joe changed some lyrics, I love it)
Mescaleros (not as good sound quality)
101ers (s'hitty sound quality, maybe still worth a listen)
El Clash Combo (live, pretty good, Joe sounds awesome)
CombatRock
07-13-2005, 01:36 PM

I love the song that goes "well, i was walking down the highroad and this guy stopped me"
and "if you really wanna go, you'll get there in the end"
(i dont remember the titles)
and the video for Johnny Appleseed is great. Not as great as Redemption Song, but you should watch it.

Tymon Dogg was a good friend of Joe way before he was in the mescaleros. He officially joined the band after their semi-secret gig at the 100 club, before they went on tour supporting The Who.
