im glad. Chirs Chelios said all the owners want is money and their sucking the love of hockey out of the game. So that made me never want to hear about the lockout again.

Never saw that coming!
Ticket prices are going to be cheap whenever the NHL starts again. I'll definitely be taking advantage of that.

Well if the pros can't play a game they supposedly love for *gasp* only a couple million dollars a year, then they don't deserve to play. Well at least, at that kind of level. They should play for the IHL where the young guys play because they love the game, not the money.

You don't seem to understand both sides of the issue very well.

Big suprise. I actually thought it already happened, since last week they made last weekend the deadline for a deal to get done. I'm really getting tired of hearing about it anyway. I don't want to hear the business of sports. I want to see some games. If they are going to be greedy, not accepting they're million dollar contracts as it is, then **** them, I'll watch basketball.

Finally, hopefully they'll actually do some work on this crap now, it took them until 3 days ago to even get started on a deal. I dunno if any other american pro league has cancelled the season, but the MLB had a shortened season around '95, I believe the NBA did once too, and I'm fairly sure this isn't the first NHL lockout.

'94 (the year the canucks almost won the cup) was a 48 game season, due to lockout.
What really pisses me off is that the league got off it's no linkage and their players got off their no salary cap, and their proposals were within $6.5 million of each other... and now they go and cancel it... We almost had hockey :(.

Now let's just hope they actually negotiate. I mean, this whole time it's been "here's our offer" followed by "we reject that, here's our offer", then they go on and badmouth eachother.
I feel no sympathy for either side, they both screwed up. The owners let the salaries get out of control, if they had all banded together and each refused to pay outrageous salaries we wouldn't be in this mess. And the players are coming off as a group of hypocrites, they won't play in the NHL under a salary cap, but they'll go to a lesser league, play for less under a cap, and take someone's job.

This really comes as no surprise, but it is still disappointing.
To answer someone's question: tickets for the Ottawa Senators range from about $30-150(canadian), with prices ever increasing. The Toronto Maple Leafs are even more expensive. Both teams are near the top of the league performance-wise though, and hockey is popular in Canada, so that partially explains the prices.

I hope Goodenow and Bettman get fired, and then the 2 guys agree on a $45 million dollar cap within half an hour.
In the MLB the same team doesn't always win. Yea, I know the Yankees go to the finals a lot but, they usually get their sorry little @sses beat and I laugh at them. This season being cacelled wasn't a big surprise to me. When they announced the lock out I knew it was going to last for a bit. Then I totally forgot about hockey and then once I remembered it back in December I knew the season was done for good. Well, can't wait for next year when the season starts again(hopefully).

Not just because I am Canadian, but I think hockey is a great sport to watch. I think Americans dismiss it because it's Canada's favorite game, and for some reason all things Canadian suck apparently. It's fast, requires more skill because they are on skates, very rough and intense, and is very exciting to see live. And of course the fights. I hear some people say they don't like hockey because of the fighting. How isn't that entertaining? And plus, it's starting to happen in the NBA, and there are scruffles after plays in football all of the time. Not to mention the bench emptying huge brawls in MLB.

Is it like MLB and the English Premiership where its the same teams always winning? Over here there is never any news on NHL even when games like the Stanley Cup are played.
We have some elite teams like the Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche, but most teams have a fair shot at winning the Stanley Cup. There are some bottom-rung teams (mostly expansion teams who joined the league in the 90s), but as the Tampa Bay Lightning demonstrated, with proper draft picks, good trades, and some luck, any team can win.
There are teams with major dynasties (ex: Edmonton Oilers in the 80s, Montreal Canadiens etc.), but it's a fairly balanced league. And the richest team in the league (New York Rangers) suck anyways, so money doesn't necessarily buy a good team.

Team chemisty plays an important roll, so the winning team is constantly changing. Some teams make it there a lot, but it's because of the chemistry. A team can rise from the bottom and win in a year or two, and a winning team can easily fall to the bottom too.

Isnt this the first time its happened to an american national sport?
It's not America's national sport, nor is it American.

No, it's the Canadian Hockey League, which is Canada's junior hockey system, consisting of the OHL(Ontario Hockey League) WHL(Western), QMJHL(Quebec Major Junior), and the ECHL(East Coast).
Anyway, I blame the players. This whole deal could have been avoided if they weren't so childishly stubborn. They refused to put any consideration into the future of the game and only looked out for their own welfare. The 24% rollback they offered would have been completely useless without a cap, and since the average player contract has maybe a year, year and a half on his contract, they're not giving up much there.
The whole situation couldn't have gone worse. We had two completely polarized sides lead by the two most terrible negotiators on the planet, who couldn't even be honest with their own employers, let alone the opposite side.
It's like a bunch of jocks trying to do calculis.

Haha, Celine Dion is the biggest embarassment to Canada ever. Quebec worships her, the rest of us won't even look at her. Got to be lovin' that Anne Murrary though.
But, just to make it fair, I'm sure we make fun of you guys, especially the Southern hicks of Texas or whatever, just as much. And for re-electing Geurg Duble Ya. Wow, that kids a dumbass.

Anyways
From what Bettman said, and if what he said was true, the salary cap that the players offered would have been the same as having no cap at all. The proposed cap exceeded the amount of money that most teams spent last year anyways.
Nice job players, you've lost my middle-class respect!

1)Agreed on not being american national sport.
2)ECHL is professional (semi) and not involved with the Canadian Junior CHL. there is also a CHL (central hockey league) which is a piece of crap league. The quality of Junior 'B' (BCHL etc) or less.
3)agreed on players and the next paragraph.
5)You spelt calculus wrong. I found it funny.
Did anyone watch the press conference they put on NHL.com? I watched the first 15 minutes and left, as it got repetitive.

Don't see the point in salary caps. Why don't teams offer less cash? Pay what you can afford, seems simple enough to me.

They could demand more money but a responsible owner wouldn't pay it. These clubs are businesses and, as everyone knows, a succesful business means taking in more income than the expenses that you are paying out. I've always thought that artificial wage structures don't reflect proper market values.

But what's best for the league itself, is generally best for the individual teams. A salary cap keeps the league competitive, and a competitive league is an exciting league. And therefore, a more succesful one. Without a cap, small market teams stand little chance(with the exception of a few instances, Calagary, Aneheim, Minnesota etc.) of becoming big market teams, since they cannot afford star players, and are in a constant state of "rebuilding".
I'm a Leaf fan, but if they just spent $100 million a year on the best players and won the cup 6 years in a row, the whole league would be uninteresting and die quickly.

actually, those guys just play in hopes of becoming pro and making millions of dollars of too.
I mean, of course they love the game, but, you know, might as well make as much money as possible...

yet another bit of news I just remembered... The Nashville Predators owner got fined pretty heavily for spilling some info on one of NHL's plans.
If the players and the owners dont come to terms by the end of the summer, the NHL will use replacement players. I got it straight off NHL.com couple months ago, wasnt sure if anyone else heard...

The East Coast league is a Semi-Professional League. Teams from Canada's East Coast play in the Q (Such as the Halifax Mooseheads and Moncton Wildcats). As does a team from the States, The Lewiston Maineiacs.
And it's Millionaires vs. Billionaires and who wants to make the most money. It's not only the players.
