Ok, so I just got to this school and my friends are asking me to play rugby, So i figure what the hell sure. I've never played before or whatched it on TV, but I do know the rules and I do know the positions so I am not completely clueless. My question is what position should I play? I am tall (6,1) 14 years old. I am not completely skinny but I definetely am not built (got some muscle). Also I am not one of the fastest kids, but I am not slow (I'd say I'm faster then 65% of the people i know). So what position should I do? I was thinking probably center or perhaps wing. Since I'm in grade 9 it's most likely they will make me a back (gr. 10s that are playing are huge.) Thanks for the help :)

Probably not wing. Wings are the fastest so leave that to some one whose one of the faster players. I would have said flanker but you said that most of the forwards would be gr. 10s which are larger than you. I guessing one of the centers maybe or the fullback.

Yeah I'd probably say centre.

14 years old and 6ft1, so you are tall for you age, if you are playing with your age group then second row, if your playing with people older then you, then Centre.

But this is also to do with skills, can you kick, catch, pass, ruck, ect? This will all help to find where you can play.

I'd say play a lock, you sound like a tall lanky kind of Chris Jack (All Blacks) type of guy, and you don't have to be very big (weight wise) as a lock.

Speed also useful at that position, and it sounds as though you're the ideal speed for that position. Fast enough to get across the park to a ruck or maul, but not fast enough to play a wing or full back.

Your height would be perfect in line outs, and if you're not that wide, it'll be easy for the guys to lift you up and reach maximum height.

If you don't have the pace then anything outside fly half is probably not your thing.

For your height and age I'd have you as a second row, maybe even No 8.

I'd say second row. If your going to be a center, size isn't really that important. Of course it helps, but you'll have to be bigger and quicker than you are, and also have good sharp hands. Also given that you are 14 and already over 6ft, you will be bigger than pretty much all other kids your age. Start as second row, but go to a gym and beef up and maybe you could make somewhere else.

I'd say Flanker or Number 8. Somewhere in the back row of the scrum. If you'd rather tryscoring then maybe head to the centre. Most people suggest Second Row so maybe go for that.
I play in the back row and I'm only about 6ft

It's always handy having a tall scrum half...

if your playing with your age group you will be put in the second row like i was, and im sure you will get tested out in a few positions to see which one your best at.

somewhere in the forwards i reckon. How heavy are you?

flanker or 2nd row if you are quite beefy, they could use someone with a bit of height in the lineouts, and after about 3-4 games you'll know all there is to being a forward (take hit ups, lineouts, scrums, clean outs etc). You could also try half-back (no 9) if you dont like getting hurt much :thumb:

Prop, probably, they don't really have to do much, especially if you have a really good second row. You rarely get the ball, just shove the opposition away from the ball, get in the way if they have it, and just make sure you don't get crushed when you're in a scrum/ruck/maul situation.

^^ He said I am not completely skinny but I definetely am not built (got some muscle).

So that means not a prop, as props need to be big and heavy as they are the ancher man of the scrum.

he could play hooker if the props are big enough, but that requires a bit of throwing skills (if you're gonna do the lineouts and stuff).

but yeah, flanker or No. 8 sounds good, somewhere in the forewards.
