No it's not.
A concept album is an album with a storyline. I don't see how it could be considered a concept album if it has no storyline.

To be a concept album, it must have a storyline or at least a main theme on all songs.

This is why the Fragile is a concept album, not because it has a storyline. Just like Dark Side of the Moon and Ride the Lightning.

There's a general theme to the album of systems failing and things sort of falling apart.

Fair enough. :) I always thought every song had some kind of emotional consistency, but it never had anything specific enough to be considered a concept album.

A concept album that has no storyline is an oxymoron. A concept album is an album that tells a story.

While The Fragile is not a concept album in the more convential storyline approach, like TDS, it does have some linking themes. Musically, there are some repeated sounds, such as the music in The Frail being repeated a couple times throughout. There are other, much more subtle examples of this. Also, lyrically, there are some definite themes.
With Teeth DID start out as a concept album (Bleedthrough), and there are some repeated lyrical themes (lines blurring, one being right where he belongs), but otherwise, it does not hold much of an actual concept.

No it's not!!!
A concept album can tell a story, but it doesn't have to. It can just have a general theme that all the songs adhere to. For example: Ride the Lightning is a concept album, because all songs are ways of dying, which is the theme.

Just saw the band last night. Wow. It was my second time seeing them but this show was obviously nothing compared to the first time. "Beside You In Time" was beautiful, I thought, as was "Right Where It Belongs". There was so much energy even from Jeordie who usually tends to just be very relaxed and mellow. I was actually fortunate enough to get into soundcheck and then met the band after. Awesome guys...all of them. Got my 'With Teeth' album autographed...it was an great experience.

Well, when you join their fanclub, you have a chance of getting in. Honestly, that's the only reason I joined...I figured I'd give it a chance (and well, you get some other neat stuff). Not everyone who was there got in though which sucks 'cause alot of people were carrying posters and whatnot to get signed. You have have to be there pretty early and wait for a long time. ONly the first few people get to go in. Or you can always find someone who is already part of 'the spiral' and go in with them. Everyone is allowed to bring in one guest with them. Well, joining the fanclub was well worth it. Trent is such a nice, humble guy.

NIN is not metal, but that has nothing to do with how much "faith" you can place on him.
Trent has incredible songwriting ability. This is damn near solid fact, not opinion. I'd be strongly willing to doubt that any of us could compose and arrange such complex music, let alone mimick the emotion Trent puts into his work.
Saying Trent is "a trendy fag who enjoys posing for magazines" shows that you have no idea what you're talking about. That is exactly what Trent despises in the music business, and he has never followed any trends. Go listen to Star****ers for god's sake and then tell me he's an attention whore.

Told him I was very excited about tonights show...looking forward to an awesome time. He said he was just as excited and thanked me for being there. I think I said something like.."i appreciate you taking the time to do this for us' and he said.."no, thank you".
Anyway, the setlist was:
Pinion
Love Is Not Enough
You Know What You Are?
Terrible Lie
The Line Begins To Blur
March of the Pigs
The Frail
The Wretched
Closer/The Only Time
Burn
Gave up
Eraser

That's a nice setlist as well...longer than some of the others they've been doing from the looks of things, although it suffers from my usual complaint of needing more stuff from The Downward Spiral.
Yeah, I enjoyed the setlist very much ('Reptile' was awesome) but I do wish they'd play some more stuff off of 'The Fragile' actually. I'd love to hear 'Just Like You Imagined', 'We're in This Together Now', 'Into the Void', and 'TDTWWA'. From TDS, I'd absolutely love to hear 'The Becoming' (one of my favorite NIN songs), 'Mr.Self Destruct' and 'Ruiner'.
Anyway, the good news is that they're going to embark on another North American tour in January. And according to Reznor himself, there will be more cities and longs setlists. Perahps some of the songs that haven't been played live in a while will come back. I'm looking forward to another tour.
Heh, I know the feeling about just not knowing what to say when you meet someone like that. Normally I'm a pretty articulate sort of guy, but when I met Thom Yorke I was completely lost for words. I can't even really remember what I said to him now, although I know it was pretty incoherent and involved professions of absolute love for his music. That's a nice setlist as well...longer than some of the others they've been doing from the looks of things, although it suffers from my usual complaint of needing more stuff from The Downward Spiral.
I was like that when I met Dredg. Of course, I'm not a very vocal person to begin with, as I'm better at getting my thoughts across in writing, but when I met them, all I remember was just hitting myself afterwards for how much of a fool I must've been.
Shadows

It's odd...his lyrics are quite simplistic for the most part, but as a songwriter he is amazing. It's the layering within the songs that does it...even though I'm not a huge fan, that's really well shown on The Fragile.
His lyrics are simplstic, but I', always amaze at how much he conveys with basic phrasing. In compositions, The Fragile is like a landmark.

when i first heard of the fanclub on nin.com i was impressed... what a great idea; Then i read that you have to pay for the fanclub and that their are several "stages" of clubs... normal, premium, etc. so to join the premium-club you have to pay more.
that's annoying!! Trent has enough money and i find it a stupid and damn idea to do so... Joe Satriani does it for free... i don't want to pay for a stupid club!!

Actually according to his website I think a lot of was his idea???
But regardless, Trent was never in it for the money and still isn't. I mean, he's taken like 5 years between records, is notoriously interview shy, and destroys all kinds of instruments at shows. He pretty much goes against everything a profitable musician would do. Not to mention he didn't have a lot of money until a couple months ago because his manager was stealing all of it.

I absolutely love "AATCHB", the song. Amazing. The only other two from Still that I have heard, and have on my computer, are "Something I Can Never Have", "Gone, Still", and "Adrift and At Peace" (which is basically a conclusion to "La Mer" and "Into the Void"). I'd love to someday get the rest of Still.

I do recommend it. It's an amazing DVD. And, even though you've heard all the songs, the visual aspect is more than half of the appeal. The visual effects on La Mer and The Great Below are worth the entire price of the DVD alone.

On another topic, what does everyone think of the lyrics to "La Mer"? While they're technically not sung in the song itself, they're quite chilling to read.
And when the day arrives
I'll become the sky
And I'll become the sea
And the sea will come to kiss me
For I am going
Home
Nothing can stop me now
See what I mean?

Really fantastic rainy day music.
Exactly!
Has anyone heard about this whole Trent solo tour? I wonder when exactly this is suppose to take place (if it does happen). From my understanding, NIN is suppose to do another US tour early next year and then head back to the studio immidiately to finish a follow up to With Teeth which Reznor wants to release next year as well. Anyway, if the solo tour were to happen, I think it'd be pretty darn cool. Just Trent and a piano..nice.

contrary to many published reports in the music press, i want to make it clear that my departure from the band has absolutely NOTHING to do with my health. i've learned much about myself and those around me (particularly in the last month) and it's brought about many positive changes. my association with the organization has opened many doors- i'm grateful and i'm ready to move on.

hm, there is one thing i always wanted to know.
Why are you listening to Nine Inch Nails!? what is it? only the music, the lyrics? do you listen to him, because you are depressive?
And the second thing is.
When was your first contact with Nine Inch Nails, and in what form... through a friend, girlfriend, radio... what was your first song? did you like NIN from the first song on, or did you need time?
can't wait for your responses....

The reason I listen to NIN...I don't know. I just love the music. I love the fact that Reznor composes it all himself, and how emotional it is. I like the way he uses machines to create very real and human music. He's ingenius with his use of layering and songwriting. He can be one of the most abbrassive artists I listen to, and then turn around and be the complete opposite...pure beauty. But there's also beauty in his loud sound too.
The first time I heard NIN was when I was going on a search for their music, because the logo intrigued me. Honestly, that's the reason. I saw the logo and heard about "this band called Nine Inch Nails" and I was very intrigued by it. So I heard Head Like a Hole and I liked it. After a while, I bought the Fragile and was completely blown away.

I listen to NIN, not only because I like the music...but the emotion and energy Trent puts into everything. First song I listened to is "We're in This Together" I saw it on MTV when the video came out. I loved that song and always will remain my favorite by NIN.
But I did need some time, I didn't like everything by them until I saw them in concert about a month ago. When I saw their live performance and how it blew everything that I've seen up to that point out of the water...I really started giving everything else a more honest, focused listen. I really have found a lot of material that I absolutely love.
I love The Fragile, but Pretty Hate Machine is my favorite by NIN.

I first heard of NIN (on the radio) in 1994 when TDS came out and "Closer" was the first song I heard. I liked "Hurt" but that was it. i don't want to say, that the composition is bad, no its good, but the voice is horrible. So a chat with Trent took place last night over at the spiral boards. Just thought I'd post up the "important' or "interesting' points on here for other fellow NIN fans.
--I heard that you were willing to do a re-released version of Pretty Hate Machine with extra songs, but Ryko wouldn't pay for it. What extra songs do you have that are unreleased from that era? Any chance they can be posted on iTunes or on nin.com for free?
trent_reznor> There are a FEW snippets that are from that era that with the proper motivation could be developed / finished / mixed
--Will there ever be another album like Still??
trent_reznor> I'd like that, too. I'm working on a few things all at once right now. Some of the stuff is in that category and I may group it together into a similar-type thing. NOT the next "proper" NIN record, though.
--I've heard rumors of a soloish piano tour, similar to the performance for reAct. How likely is this, when might it happen, and can you provide us with any other details?
trent_reznor> Wow - many people have asked me that recently. I was thinking out loud during an interview when I mentioned that (never a good idea). I would LIKE to do that eventually, but it will not be in the next 6 months - my time is filled at the moment with touring and working on the new record.
--Can you please clarify the situation with Jerome Dillon in regards to the conflicting reports we've been hearing?
trent_reznor> Here's the truth: regardless of what he apparently now wants you to believe, we cancelled several shows due to his heart. He told me "I have a clean bill of health" and shortly thereafter he spent the night again in the hospital. We auditioned drummers to complete the tour - with full disclosure to Jerome. He reacted poorly to us finding someone and choosing to finish this current leg of the tour with that person. Tempers flared and the decision to permanently replace him was made - by everyone in the band and management. Jerome is a great drummer and I truly wish him well - sometimes he just seems to get his facts a little mixed up.
--Trent, will you continue doing meet & greets and soundchecks thru next years tour?
trent_reznor> Maybe. Let me explain. The condition I demanded in regards to continuing the tour was that I could have time to work on the new record. That may eat into soundcheck time for me. We'll see. I enjoy meeting you guys.
--any possibilities of releasing the tour on dvd
trent_reznor> I wanted to film this leg, but there was problems with the record label. I hope to film the upcoming tour (which will be announced very soon)
--Would you ever consider doing a completely instrumental album? Or a score as opposed to a soundtrack for a film?
trent_reznor> Maybe, as long as it didn't mislead people as to what it was.
--I'm sure this question has been asked a million times but is Closure still going to be coming out on DVD? If so, when can we expect it?
trent_reznor> I've been asking that same question myself. It's done and waiting on the record label.
--What are the chances of hearing a studio version of "Non Entity", or other B-Sides/new tracks not on With Teeth?
trent_reznor> Chances are good. Patience.
--will you be purchasing manson's new fragrance?
trent_reznor> He's certainly made some things recently that SOUND like ****, has he moved into other senses as well?
Ok, well, i gotta go at the moment...I apologize for the long post. If anyone is interested i'll post up whats left of it a little later.

wow... some nice news up there. yes post more of them.... want to read the whole interview.
When he plans to make a second 'still' record i can't imagine he can do this... still ist just perfect! its the same as with the Fragile... he never will top this and if he really does a second still it will have a very different sound and style.
to the last question... trent still doesn't speak to MM

Ok, here's whats left of the chat transcript:
--trent- with the last release changing so much from the ones before it (fragile mainly) to more of a straight up rock type of thing- do you think you will continue in the same vein as "with teeth" or switch it up again? i've always loved how you can switch things up and still come across as totally confident in what you are doing.
trent_reznor> It really depends on what FEELS like the right thing to do - what excites me the most. So far, the new material is different than... well... different.
--being at the last show you played "not so pretty now" at (and the 2 after that) i was just wondering why you stopped playing it? did you just decide that you didn't want to play it anymore? are there any plans to release this song in the future? (studio version?)
trent_reznor> It will show up somewhere.
--Trent: What's the overall feeling you get after doing the meet & greets at shows?
trent_reznor> What I thought could turn out to be a hassle has been really cool. If it wasn't for you guys I wouldn't be able to be doing this, so a sincere thank you from me is due.
--ive webcasts are obviously very difficult to do, but are something we would all love. Where do you see Nine Inch Nails online content moving in the next couple years? Are webcasts planned? More behind-the-scenes footage like we're getting now? More info content (e.g. setlist archives)?
trent_reznor> Webcasts are coming. More interactivity is necessary. This is primitive, but at least it's a start. Thanks for bearing with us.
--Why no sacd version of with teeth? I think sacd shines above dvd quality sound, so was just wondering why one for tds and not with teeth?
trent_reznor> These decisions are made by record companies. Ask Interscope. I was told the future of music is the Dual Disc. Um... OK.
--Trent, will we ever get to hear "And All That Could Have Been", "We're in This Together Now" or "Sunspots" live?
trent_reznor> Yes, maybe and yes.
--Now that some time has passed. How do you feel about Nothing Records? Do you think you could have created "The Downward Spiral" or "The Fragile" if you had been directly under Interscope. Would those albums turned out different?
trent_reznor> Good question. As far as my own music, I don't think the concept of nothing records has any impact on the way they sound or the freedom to create them. As far as running a record company, I have no interest in this climate. The business side of the music industry is slimy and sickening.
--You've mentioned that the next tour will probably be a two-band bill. Who is your ideal choice for the second band?
trent_reznor> Not sure yet. Someone that I like, respect and could imagine hanging out with. Probably not DFA1979.
--Do you masturbate often?
trent_reznor> constantly. I am right now.
--Will you be returning to Canada after this leg of the tour is over?
trent_reznor> yes.
--So do you like your head shaved better?
trent_reznor> For the moment, yes.
--What was the last concert you went to as a spectator? Do you pick apart the sets/lighting/sound etc. or just enjoy the show?
trent_reznor> Just saw Kanye West and Dillinger Escape Plan one after the other in the same evening. Kanye did a respectable job for a hip-hop artist (who are ALWAYS terrible live) and Dillinger was unbelievable. The coolest thing I have seen in a long time.
--how did you like visiting japan? did you do anything exciting? what did you buy at akihabara?
trent_reznor> I love Japan. If the language barrier wasn't so great, I'd consider moving there.
--I'd like to see you record will Saul Williams, any chance of that?
trent_reznor> Yes, we've discussed working together on him new record.
--How much of the stage design and production elements are your concepts?
trent_reznor> I'm involved with all aspects. I hired Roy Bennett to come up with the look, then I get involved with the integration and particulars.
--when you are working on a song at what point do you know that you are done, without adding or taking away from it by continuing to tinker.
trent_reznor> I used to have a really tough time letting go. Now I'm learning when it's time to have the courage to say it's finished.
--The lyrics on the lyrical poster such as "message to no one" "the life you didn't lead" and "the warning" will these be songs that we'll eventually see released?
trent_reznor> ?
--Actually, when you're writing, do you have mental images that you translate into music, or does that depend on what you're working on at the time?
trent_reznor> A lot of THE FRAGILE started as visual "places" I'd picture in my mind, then try to "dress the set" with sound.
--trent: whats your fav. band right now? What kind of stuff are you into...whaqts your fav. band overall?
trent_reznor> Right this second, Autolux. I LOVE their record and really enjoyed getting to see them play every night. I still don't know how they do what they do.
--Who shot/edited the videos projected on the screen durring this tour?
trent_reznor> Andrea Giacobbe did the films we show during ERASER and RWIB. Rob and I did the effect on BYIT. Roy Bennett designed the set, Martin Phillips programmed and designed the look, Alastair Watson operates and has embellished it as the tour has progressed.
There ya go. That's all.

"I'd like to officially say FVCK the grammys. Talk about out of touch. If you want to see why the record business is collapsing, look no further than the incredible lack of talent and innovation being celebrated on those lists. I'll certainly feel good if Trent wins the Grammy, because it means he's getting recognition, but I won't think of it as an honour to him. It isn't an award for talent, it's an award for popularity.

I'll be doing the DVD re-issue of Nine Inch Nails' 1997 Closure documentary and music video collection which, up until now, had only been available in VHS format.
95% of the work is already done, as I started it as a spec project almost a year ago. Right now, I'm just fleshing out some of the screens and adding more material provided by Interscope.

Damn those scalpers! The same thing happened when NIN was first going on tour to support 'With Teeth'...when they did the club tour last year. I was lucky enough to get tickets for the Austin show but that one also sold out within 3-5mins...as did the Houston show which I wanted to also attend. Anyway, I'll be seeing NIN again on March 24th! Can't wait.
By the way, for those outside of the U.S., seems like they might do a world tour again. At one of the last chats that happened over at the spiral, Reznor himself mentioned something about doing this last U.S. tour and going overseas one more time before finally taking a break. Perhaps they'll be attending summer festivals?

First time I heard of NIN, I expected them to be an overlyexagerated heavy power chord crazy death metal type band.
I was miles from accuracy, these guys blow me away with their sound. For some reason, and not because I'm a bassist, the basslines seem to stand out most in their music.
Interesting. I've never heard anyone say the bass stands out the most for him in NIN. Cool to hear that, though.

I've seen pieces of it. They screened the "Happiness in Slavery" video at the With Teeth release party I attended last year. It was...gruesome. I couldn't stop watching though, heh.:amaze: Anyway, I did read however that the reason Reznor did the Broken Movie was simply to see how far he could get with it. I think it was at the time he was having problems with his label and they were trying to control his every move or something. Guess he was just trying to piss them off.
Then he goes on and says that the reason he never released the movie was because he didn't want to have to explain it to every reporter he met...said it made the 'Happiness in Slavery' video look like a Disney movie.
By the way, Repcak, where'd you find the movie?
repcak
01-26-2006, 04:18 PM
Broken was indicated ... forbidden... you can't buy it, but i found it on emule (2p2 network)
in this video you see how a man is kidnapped by another person, who rapes him, tortures him and kills him in the end... aerated with the videoclips of 'wish' and 'happiness in slavery'
and i agree with you; i too think that reznor wanted to see how far he can go until people/publicity will shout:"stop" ... he achieved his goal :p

I've never seen the whole movie, but I have seen parts of it, and that was my exact question as well: Why?!
I mean, stuff that derranged doesn't come from a normal person. But what Misunderstood said seems very logical, plus Reznor was about as heavy an alcoholic as you can get.
Closer is a far better artistic statement. The video is very surreal, but still very expressive and very cool. Then he became even more refined through the Fragile into the **** that he's calling a NIN video with songs like Only.

the biggest contradiction was to see the video "happiness in slavery" (for the first time) and right afterwards seeing the video "non-entity" live. it was so paradox. i couldn't/or better: it's hard to believe, that it was the same person, only 12years later. he changed so much during his lifetime.
and to be serious i don't want to know in what a bad (mental-) constitution he was, during "broken". it was his worst lifetime ever (i think)
the other point for broken, i supposse is the fact that he wanted to provoke the world... for whatever reason, i don't know. maybe he didn't really wanted to get such famous and wanted to destruct everything ... maybe this is 'broken' - a status: mr. sefldestruct his own musical career.
offtopic: @kage: do you still wanna make this pen pal thing?

Trent Reznor is not sick....
The only coherent way you could make the argument that he's sick is if you consider his alcoholism. Mentally he seems like an amazingly generous and kind person. He's campaigned against fur for PETA and done concert efforts to raise money to help the victims of Katrina.

now... now he is clean! but during broken and TDS he was mentally sick.. had depressions and so on. After The Fragile tour he collapsed completly and went for a rehab to a clinic.

yeah, if i ever have to do a biography for school, Trent would probably be one of the most interesting people to do.

Didn't he release Broken because of the record label being a twat? From what I hear, he had all of this anger from the record label messing him around so he wanted it to be as abrasive and disgusting as possible.
I tell you what, it definitely worked! Industrial reigns supreme as the harshest genre of music.
On another note, I still haven't really listened to With Teeth. It doesn't grab me.
And another note... I'm really loving Underneath It All right now. A really tragic song, to me.

i can agree with him.... although not 100%, but i think i know what he means. Industrial - the real one - was/is sometimes really harsh, and you can't compare it with NIN.
Industrial takes getting used to and is shocking. Listen to the old Skinny Puppy records or to Einstürzende Neubauten - Kollaps (i still can't listen to this record).
And the link for the FA about NIN:

So...I go to the University of New Brunswick and I recently won a contest having to do with my off campus meal plan. I won $1000 toward a Spring Break vacation and I think I am gonna use it to see Nine Inch Nails in London, Ontario on March 6 with one friend :D:D:D:D. We never get any good concerts over here, so this is like a dream come true!
