best album: the fragile
favourite album: the downward spiral
for aggressions: broken

Fragile is the total package of what NIN is capable of.
Right

The Fragile hit me right on, whereas TDS took me awhile to get into. I love it now, but at first it was too... emotionally heavy and depressive. It still is, but that's one of the reasons I love it. I don't know many people who can make an album that is that powerful.

I spent $80 on a ticket to go see NIN in August the other day, and since then I've been wondering what the atmosphere at NIN shows is generally like. Anyone care to fill me in?

You can go to echoingthesound.net and look for the tour journals...there are reviews and comments on every show the band did on this past club tour. It's a good NIN board.

The new dates for the fall tour (with QOTSA) have been announced...finally! :D They are on the 'current' section of the NIN official site and some more are going to be announced later.

Can't wait for this one! I'll probably be making it to the San Antonio show on 10/16. I wish I could make both the Houston and S.A. but by that time I'll be in school so...it gets tough traveling around during the week. Anyway, the countdown begins...again! Heh. :D D@mn, I just hope these shows don't sell out as quick as the club dates did.

yesterday NIN played in germany on southside festival; i have read the review and the concert was full of aggression (NIN started the show with Wish)!! (except hurt was a more "quiet" song)
during star****ers, when they came to the bridge, trent shouted "stop, stop,... f*** the bridge" and they didn't played the slower part :D

and today i will see them... i try to get in the first row and i will make some photos for you! i promise....

and the great thing, they haven't played too much With_teeth songs... more older songs :thumb: and the show lasted 1h and 20minutes :)

Oh man I can't wait until August 22nd, the concert reviews sound great.

Also, did NIN ever cover Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb? I found it on my college network, and it's apparently NIN, PF and David Bowie. I don't think it's genuine but I figured I'd ask anyway.

so i am still alive... to be in the 3rd row is suicide :D but i made some really nice photos and i even got the string from the guitarist, who smashed his guitar at the end and the whole neck flought into my direction and i was one of 10 people who grabbed it and fought for it... after 5minutes there were only 5left and we decided to divide the guitar, i got the the g string ( i think) and 3 guys fought for the guitarneck... i am happy with my string, cause i really don't know who got the neck . but i wanna have a string than nothing. :thumb:
so his guitar (the red fender ) is history .. http://fm4.orf.at/holzmann/199492/main on the first photo you can see the red guitar, it's a picture from the the festival one day before (one of the ****ty one)

dresden dolls were great too... great support ...they played even a cover version of war pigs from black sabbath ( which i am going to see on 20.6 together with velvet revolver and black label society :thumb: )

alltogether 5microphones were damaged, 2guitars (trent threw his black dean guitar into the crowd.... 1metre beside me , but the security saved it...so nobody got it) dozen of waterbottles were flying through the air and one keyboard was damaged...during hurt!! trent played hurt and at the end of the song the microphone felt cause the pillar was so weak... trent tried to fix it (the song wasn't over... about 30sec were left), but the pillar with the micro felt once again, so Trent made one footstep back and kicked the whole keyboard down :naughty:
then one guy(from the backstage) came on the stage to fix the keyboard and trent , 4metres behind him, took a waterbottle, layed it on his Pen,is and pisses (symbolical) on him with water... :D

during star****ers inc. (he even played the bridge today, not so like the day before) we started to sing the part "don't you, don't you" and then everybody stopped and was waiting for trent for saying "Fu,ck you", but he stood there, smiled at us and said nothing,... then we once again started to sing "don't you don't you, don't you" faster, louder, faster louder, faster louder... until trent shouted "FU,CK YOU" :D

at the end he said: “In the last two days we had 2 shi, ttty concerts in germany, and we thought we are going to kill ourself, but you saved us. Thank you, you’re the greatest crowd…..” :D

and here is the setlist

repcak

yes he looks refreshed but he has to many muscles :upset: in his ealier day he looked better.

once one guy said: "arnold reznor turned completly to trent schwarzenegger. He is now the incredible Hulk" ... at first i was eroded at him, but he is right.... it looks weird when a man with such muscles stands on the stage and plays hurt.....

Let's just say I were to go out and buy a NIN album...Which should I buy? I would assume The Downward Spiral, due to my somewhat expansive knowledge of them. It did well in the Top 100 album comp

Kage
06-25-2005, 09:47 PM

Depends. I recommend The Fragile because it's slightly more accessible, if not more daunting for pure length. Fragile is my personal favorite as well. TDS is darker, more abrasive, and very depressing. It's an emotionally-heavy and burdensom listen, but that's why I like it so much.

In conclusion, either of those two. I'm assuming TDS will be cheaper since it isn't two discs, which may be a deciding factor as well.

BlindWriting
06-25-2005, 09:48 PM
Start with The Downward Spiral, and whether you like it or not, get The Fragile anyway. The latter is the best NIN album but not the best introduction to his music.

I wanna see NIN soo bad (11/05 in Philly, 3 days after my birthday)

But Gigantour tickets cost $160 and my vacation to Disneyworld from 10/18 to 10/25 is $3000 (birthday present)

If Gigantour cost $160, NIN will probably cost double that (Considering Gigantour is in the 2200 seat House of Blues in Atlantic City and NIN is in the 20000 or so seat Wachovia Spectrum)

gigantour costs that much because of the amount of headlining bands. nin will cost between 45 and up (depending on seats).

Nice first concert to go too. Mine was APC last year. Did they play 'The Great Below' At Melbourne? I really really wanted to see that live. Also, I wanted to see 'We're in this together' too. There was too much stuff from With Teeth in there.

This is the set list from Melbourne:
wish
sin
line begins to blur
march of the pigs
something i can never have
hand that feeds
with teeth
terrible lie
burn
closer
reptile
home
the frail
the wretched
dead souls
suck
love is not enough
the day the world went away
gave up
hurt
you know what you are
star ****ers
head like a hole

It rocked my socks however they didnt play la mer or just like you imagined which are easily my 2 favourite NIN songs... oh well we got reptile. God i know why they have been called the best live band in the world, they were just incredible!

I'm seeing them tomorrow night in Brisbane. I've been waiting so long for this, I can't wait!

EDIT: Who opened at the shows you guys saw. I think I saw two bands listed to play 2 shows each. In Brisbane we get The Hollow, so if anyones seen them, would they care to inform me on what they are like?

Well, The Follow opened at the show i was at. You probably just finished seeing them right at this point so my thoughts on them would be useless, but still i thought they were okay. They had some really cool songs, but some prett average ones too. And i got very turned off when the singer said ' My voice has been kinda broken lately cos im sick, and so has my heart, this songs called No Romance".

Also, how different does Trent look with a shaved head?I couldnt get over it. And how frickin muscley is he.

he looks much younger now. like a 20year old singer from a punk-band :D but its still trent reznor.

The show last night was ****ing brilliant. I'm so glad I got to finally see them. I couldn't believe how Trent looked when he first came on stage though, I really wasn't expecting a shaved head. It was also kinda funny watching a rather muscular looking guy sing Hurt. Anyway, it was awesome.

btw, The Follow were really average as an opening band I thought. And I disliked the vocalist a lot. It seemed as though he was trying way to hard to have any stage presence, and it didn't come off naturally at all.

i wouldn't say it is the best, but i like it ... a lot of people who heard it were disappointed (and 5years ago they were disappointed about the fragile, cause the hoped trent will make a 2nd the downward spiral)
now they all are disappointed about with_teeth and i can't understand that... its a great record. i am sure that in 2years everybody will like it... c'mon with_teeth is something new, a new sound a new feeling. trent reznor is 40yrs old and he changed; he lives another life than 5yrs ago and therefore you can't expect anohter TDS-record

I agree with this to an extent, but I have allowed been able to appreciate some of the songs on with teeth after seeing them performed live. Love is not enough, the line begins to blur, you know what you are and THTF were all brilliant live. Witha Teetha is still kind of stupid, but then again so was big man with a gun...maybe its the album's sense of humour. Nonetheless there are still some songs that i just can not get into because of the lyrics, the collector and sunspots as well as all the love in the world spring to mind immediately.

BTW was anyone at the second Sydney show? ****ing brilliant stuff...even though i missed the first 45mins because of traffic :upset:

wow that's really interesting.

yesterday after reading the review of med57 i listened to TDS once again. i released that the melody of the downward spiral and hurt is similar: in tds-song is divided in 3parts -> 1) sad melody 2) after 2min the melody gets "happier" and afterwards trents shouts and you hear the lyrics. ok; when you remember the two (first!) notes of the piano and play hurt you will hear the two notes again!
its weird, only two notes. i heard the two songs hundred of times and never realised this.

Eh, most of the album isn't like that at all. He went in a different direction, and he'll also go in a different direction in future material. I did prefer his operatic concept albums more, but With Teeth is no less a great CD. The Fragile was an achievment he should never try to replicate anyway, because he won't be able to.

hm, yes, but listen to the last song of the with teeth record. the last words he is saying is: "but its still in me". i think he is happy, he "won" the fight against his depressions etc. but he know exactly, that you can't erase 30years of your life. his whole life he hated himself and only in the last few years its got better and better, but for how long?!
once he said in an interview (short before the tour) that the tour-life is a different one than the life at home. he wasn't sure if he will be able to stay off drugs. so, we will see in what a condition he will be when the wt-tour will be over.

If you can, get right up the front. Reznor (as far as i know) always goes into the crowd for the end of Piggy and holds the mic out for someone in the crowd to sing. That would rule. And also, when i saw then a week ago tonight he threw his guitar into the crowd.

yeah, first row will be great. i was 3rd row at the concert: 2metres beside me he throw his black dean guitar into the crowd and the guitarist destroyed his red fender ot the last song (gave up) and throw the guitar-neck into my direction; i had it in my hands, but about 7other fans wanted the neck too, so i got only the g-string :D :D

but be aware: to be in the first row is really hard. i even wanted to go away after 3 songs, cause i really thought i will die there. everybody from behind is pushing you forward and for a short time i couldn't breathe. so if you are strong and tall go for the first row, if you are weak and small think of it twice.

@peephole_10: i never heard that trent is going to the peoples and let someone sing along... it wasn't the case at my concert; but they didn't play 'piggy' :upset:

We didn't get a huge amount of destruction at the concert I saw. But then again, I'm willing to say the crowd didn't really deserve it. The crowd just didn't react to some songs, which really dissappointed me. Anyway, half through a song (I can't remember what, but it came just before Star****ers) the guitarist fell into the drum kit, taking out like 2/3's of it, before jumping back up and proclaiming "Whoops!". It was pretty funny, even though he ruined the song, and had to disappear for 3 tracks after that. He did a great job smashing his guitar at the end as well.

As for Trent, he didn't smash any guitars, but after the couple of whacks he delivered to one it wouldn't have been too healthy. A few mics were lost though, and I nearly got the Tamborine he smashed but I missed out by like two places. :upset:

Yeah in Melbourne the crowd was really bad, when they played songs like burn and dead souls all the people near me in the pit were like 'what is this?'
Aaron North is a gun on the guitar and extremely entertaining to watch he jumped off the keyboards towards the end of the concert almost taking them and himself out, then at the end of HLAH he threw his guitar against the amps on the side of the stage which bounced off and almost took one of the guys doing security.
Great Show but not much damage!

its inofficial... a bootleg or something like that.
the first song is we're in this together, followed by a song i never heard before (although i have all nin-albums!!!) and then the perfect drug; but the cd is not a compilation.

edit:
4th song: something i can never have (live) ... its amazing; hm... and its not the '...And all that could have been'-version.... its another one. at the end of it you hear people clapping in their hands. i suppose it had to be played in a club or something.

5th song: the day the world went away. once again a version i never heard.

6th song: hurt
it seems that all the songs (except of the first 3) were played in a small club, cause you hear people clapping at end of every song.

7th song: even deeper... incl. background singing (some women)

8th song: the big come down
9th song: the fragile
10th song: hurt ... once again... strange

[thats it. no more songs]

'give it to me (long pause)
and real (i'm not sure... it was too quiet)
give it to me, give it to me

make it stop

give it to me, give it to me, yeah take it.
desert, desert, desert (very quiet with an echo-effect)
give it to me.

give it to me, give it to me, give it to me, etc.
make it stop,
make it stop,
make it stop.'

its more a techno or drum'n'bass song than industrial!! i think someone took the voice of trent reznor (from some songs) and sampled it on the computer with his own musical-theme. this will explain why the lyrics are so simple.

Kage
09-13-2005, 04:57 PM
It's possible that someone did the sampling, like you said. "Give it to me" is a lyric from Gave Up; "make it stop," is also a line from Please. Who knows, maybe someone just cut up those lines from those songs and made his own remix. Then again, those lyrics also remind me of Complications of the Flesh, but I don't know about the "desert" part.

Kage
09-13-2005, 06:46 PM
If you're a big Nine Inch Nails fan, they certainly are, especially since each should be relatively cheap. Broken is my least favorite NIN record, and probably the only major release, except With Teeth, that I can say has songs I dislike. This is contradictory to most people, though, as Broken seems to often be a fan favorite. It's harder and rawer, but it's a nice placeholder between PHM and TDS.

In short...go for it, unless you have yet to purchase one of the four full albums, in which case I recommend completing that collection first.

That's kind of how it works. They make up a setlist and play the same songs at every show. The order may change, but the songs are the same.

yeah, but they could vary it more... put more songs from the fragile on!!

isn't it boring for them to play every ****ing evening the same songs ?!

edit: and they always end with star****ers, followed by head like a hole

Shadows
09-24-2005, 05:57 PM
It can get boring, it just depends on how they feel about their music. Further motivation to put out the best stuff possible.

I agree, they should've played more Fragile stuff. But for a band like NIN who has millions of songs released, it can get challenging to keep their playing of every song sharp. With a defined setlist, they can relearn the selected songs and not have to keep their entire discorgraphy fresh in their minds.

Today, I finally broke down and bought a NIN album. I picked up The Downward Spiral from Borders for 15 bucks. So far, I am glad I did. :-D I'm also kind of kicking myself for not seeing NIN a few days ago. :p

As it stands at the moment, my favorite song is Closer, probably just because I'm so familiar with the song.

It's about the gradual destruction of an unstable mind.

Mr. Self Destruction is pretty much an introduction to the concept. Heresy is him giving up religion. The Downward Spiral is his suicide. Hurt is him reflecting on his life after he kills himself. And so on.

Wow, it's been a while since I've been in here.

Dr. Jake Destructo
10-02-2005, 05:55 PM
Similair to Dark Side of the Moon, then? Well, plus drugs, heh. :p

Thanks for the info, I always seem to appreciate music even more when I know the story and meaning behind it.

Shadows

It basically follows the life of a person as they fall through a "downward spiral" you could say. Each song tells of a stage that person goes through. He first rejects God (Heresy) and goes on to reject society (March of the Pigs). That person tries to turn to drugs/alcohol/prostitution (Reptile) to remedy the problems, but in the end finds that suicide is the only answer (Hurt).

That's just a quick summary. Each song tells of a slightly different stage. I think the way the concept progresses and each song fits it is brilliance.

i like 'The Becoming' (the screams in the background! wow) and 'The Downward Spiral' most.

how i see TDS(the song): its the song where he commits suicide. he knows thats his last few minutes in his life; he once again gets sad, depressive (you hear even his breathing)... maybe he looks back at his life and rethinks once again (for the last time) if he should kill himself.
The breathing stops and (at 1:50) the music gets happy ... for me its sounds like music for a little child (5-9yrs) cause its sounds so funny/happy. thats the moment where he decides: no i don't want to live anymore... in some seconds the whole pain will be gone! and thats why he feels relieved and smiles in the end. Afterwards he shots himself "so much blood for such a tiny hole"

/thats my interpretation of the song; what do you think about it?

I think I might have the same video. Is Trent wearing a 'Satanic Army' top? I have most of NIN's music videos if you would like any. Just ask.

And what made Hurt just that bit more amazing when I saw them live, was that there was one moment, for just a second. Where I, and I think a lot of the crowd, realised how great the moment was. I will never forget the smile that came over Trents face, before he lowered his head to hide it. It was one of the best moments of my life.

I like You Know What You Are? a lot. One of my favorite things about it is the out-of-place sounding piano in the chorus, and the undercurrent of dark and machine-like ambience that make the song what it is. Aside from those very NIN touches, it's not an amazingly written song, but it's always been the subtleties that make NIN what it is.

I thought they really overdid the drums on that one. The main parts of the song were alright, but the chorus was horrible...methinks. I don't really mind though. That album has some really great songs that make up for a few downfalls.

I personally think 'You Know What You Are' is a great song. It's a great live song. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's one of my favorite ones off the album, but it's still a good one nonetheless. 'Beside You In Time' and 'All the Love in the World' are some of my favorite ones. Heh, I wonder what ever happened to his "master plan"...if he even ever had one.

Anyway, listened to an interview with Trent earlier and he was once again asked about the whole Tapeworm project. Said that although that didn't work out, he was sure he and Maynard would work together again in the future. That would be awesome (of course, hoping the project does see the light of day). He also commented on why they don't play songs such as 'The Perfect Drug' and 'We're in This Together Now' (one of my favorite tracks off The Fragile). Something about the vocal range being to high for him and he didn't know what the hell he was thinking when he recorded that one. It was a good short phone interview.

That's disappointing as hell. :( "The Perfect Drug" and "We're in This Together" are two of my favorite NIN songs ever.

halo18 and 20? ... hm.. what albums?! don't know inside out what album-title is which halo...

@all NIN-regulars here:
Everyone says that only TDS is a concept album and that TF and WT is not! I disagree.
Maybe its not a concept album in the classic way, but the following albums have still a 'story' to tell. Never realized it?

The Fragile: I still haven't worked this album out to the end. Its ever more hard, cause it consists of 2 cds. Therefore i will speak of the first one (which has for sure a 'story' to tell - i'm not sure with the second one). I still don't know exactly what it's about, but it has something to do with a 'love-story': Trent Reznor fails in love, realizes that the other person doesn't love him and he is rejected. He describes his feelings of 'failing' in love and so on...
The song "The Fragile" (taken as an album-title) is one of the beautifullest love-songs i 've heard -> "she shines in a world full of ugliness, she matters when everything is meaningless "

With_Teeth: The story how Trent Reznor 'defeated' his depressions. His way through therapy, the up and downs.
f.e.: The song: "Every day is exactly the same" describes a/one feeling of depression-state or the day-routine in a hospital of rehabilitation; the song text: "I'm writing on a little piece of paper, I'm hoping someday you might find, Well I'll hide it behind something, They won't look behind" > maybe its the letter someone leaves before he commit suicide... and in this case its the note trent wanted to leave.

its one o'clock in the night and i'm tired... maybe you discuss it and i will add more of my interpretation-ideas tomorrow.

I agree with you. Although WT and TF aren't technically considered "concept albums", I think everything puts out has a some sort of theme or constant message throughout. TDS was the only one with a really specific, defined story though.

yeah, In TDS he at first had a concept in mind and then he started to write the songs. In WT and TF he wrote songs all the time during a special period of time/life and then put it in order

The Fragile was a concept album, but it had no storyline.

That's kind of contradictory.

Yes(but not live)
Trent Reznor would be that ONE.
