Please...
Yeah, what's wrong with my list mate.
Yeah, what's wrong with my list mate.
No, no that's not what I meant at all. sorry, that didn't come across how I wanted. It was basically a "don't make me try to narrow it down to ten" kind of thing. Although, I eventually did manage to do it.
And, dammit, I knew I'd leave something off. Ruiner! That's my favorite song from TDS, how could I forget it?

Yeah, sorry about that, I can see how much of an asshole I must have seemed like. Ha, as if it would be anyone's place to condemn someone else's list!

I'm starting to get into NIN a lot more lately listening to Pretty Hate Machine and With Teeth. TDS for somer eason is hard to find around here, but I plan on going out again this weekend and finding a copy.
I definately recommend doing that. You can always get it from Amazon for relatively cheap if all else fails. If you've never heard TDS, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by it, even if you don't like it so much on the first listen. It grows on you, trust me. It's brilliant on so many levels.

Every song on TDS completely blows me away. I saw it for $15 which is cheap in NZ, and I had $12 :upset: ... It's always in the back of my head, when I see it for the normal price of $34 .It's more than 10 years old!

Shhhh! Don't let the Amazon secret leak!
I don't have a usable credit card at the moment though, that's like the whole root of the problem. Making me get out of the computer chair and going to the music store...stupid plastic...

I'll be at the music store tommorow as well, looking for some stupid plastic (hopefully Team Sleep and Porcupine Tree)

Yeah, I just read that article "The Upward Spiral". Very interesting stuff. Not only do I see a lot of the lyrical connections to With Teeth (which in turn makes me appreciate the writing a lot more), but I definitely did not know that he OD'd on heroin. I find it hard to believe that he finds himself disappointed with The Fragile. It was easily my favorite of his records.

Are you by any chance using firefox or anything else? 'Cause if you are then that's probably the problem. I couldn't get it to work on mine either so I had to open it with Explorere (which I hate). Anyway, if you can't get the video, there's an interview posted on the site which pretty much sums it up...

I like "with teeth" ALOT.
Trent is much more mature now and more unrestricted. "Right where it belongs" is magnificent imo, obviously not NIN style but so what, there really are no rules that says is has to sound like anything before it. He is clean and sober now after years of partying, and I really like this album. Heroin and drugs almost killed him, and he hints at love for the first time ever. ( basicially he says, "Ill hide it behind something you would never look behind") imo it refers to his heart and love. Times change, attitudes change, and I like the direction of Trent/NIN.

"Along with the 13 tracks on With Teeth, the sessions yielded at least seven more songs Reznor hopes to eventually release. And since wrapping the album, he's already been writing the next one. "I haven't interrupted the writing process this time, and I feel energized," he says. "
I wonder if he is thinking of releasing those seven songs before the next album or as part of the next album...
*thinks about the mysterious lyrics on the "With Teeth" page and the mysterious "master plan" he keeps mentioning*....
Hmm... :amaze: ...and well, at the bottom of the "With Teeth" page it says..."check this page for more content in the coming days"...Heh, I'm just curious to know whats going on (if anything).

Probably...
I really hope its new songs... That'd be cool.
Trent is at a point in his carreer hwere he could literally get away with murder. Perhaps he released With Teeth as a bait album--somethign to hold us off and keep us interested for the time being until the real release was to come about. Now, with so much new material dangling in front of us, we drool for more and we never lose interest in his NIN project.
To cover for this, he booked a huge US tour in small venues, not to, as he claims, gauge the popularity of NIN (which would take a very thick skull not to realize that NIN still has a massive loyal fanbase), but to take the attention away from the fact that no matter what he releases, it'll be treated as god's gift to music by his fans. Meanwhile, he plans to execute his "master plan," but managed to buy himself some more time in cleverly sinister plan.

6 years is a long time man. Sure I think T-rez is one of the most brilliant musicians the world has seen in a long time, but I doubt he sees himself that way. 90% of the bands out there could NOT just disappear from the public for almost a decade and just comeback and sell out shows the way NIN has.
I think for the most part Trent knows this, and he didn't want to "expect to much" from his fans.

I'm not too sure if it's an official release or not (if it is, then this would be halo 20) but according to the NIN hotline it contains:
"[The DVD contains a] Body of Work section identical to the one on TDS Dualdisc, but updated with Halo 18 and 19.
Then there's the featurette. From the descriptions I read of the listening parties, this is what was played on screens at those. The opening is clips from various NIN videos, then it plays clips of every NIN video, Woodstock '94, Closure, AATCHB, etc, all in chronological order, opened by titles like "[1989]" and "THE_PERFECT_DRUG." The quality looks and sounds pretty much flawless. The length of this entire deal is probably under half an hour. "
I saw this dvd on ebay a couple days ago selling for about $99..but then I read somewhere that the dvd is going to come with some magazines, bundled with some video games, and given out at clubs...and well, NIN.com is giving it out for free...

Well I've been carefully cutting down and altering the songs on my 2 CD's for a NIN compilation. It simply cannot be done perfectly. Here is the track list so far, done in chronological order so people can see what albums they came from and tell me off if I left a song behind or included one that shouldn't be there.
Pretty Hate Machine
Down In It
Head Like A Hole
Sin
Terrible Lie
Something I Can Never Have
Broken
Wish
Happiness In Slavery
Gave Up (?)
Suck
The Downward Spiral
March Of The Pigs
Closer
Hurt
Heresy
Mr. Self Destruct
Reptile
Piggy (?)
Ruiner (?)
The Perfect Drug
The Fragile
The Day The World Went Away
We're In This Together
The Fragile
The Wretched
Somewhat Damaged
The Great Below (?)
- -
Star****ers Inc.
Into The Void
Where Is Everybody (?)
The Big Comedown
Still
And All That Could've Been
Deep (?)
With Teeth
The Hand That Feeds
All The Love In The World
Every Day Is Exactly The Same
Only (?)
Sunspots (?)
The Line Begins To Blur
Right Where It Belongs (?)
The ones with ?'s next to them are one's that I am unsure of to put on a NIN compilation with their best material. Some are due to time constraints, as this set of songs is still 7 minutes over 2hr 40min. Please, big NIN fans, help me with this, this has the potential to be a badass CD. Don't tell me to just listen to their CD's, I've already done that 103209328438423 times. Anyway, thanks :naughty:

The Fragile
The Day The World Went Away
We're In This Together
The Fragile
The Frail/The Wretched
Somewhat Damaged
The Great Below (?)
- -
Star****ers Inc. I wouldn't include this, it's a bad intro Replace with: I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally OR Underneath It All
Into The Void
Where Is Everybody (?)
The Big Comedown
Still

Deep (?)
With Teeth

Man, that sucks. A good audience is necessary for a good concert. In Houston, every concert I've been to, the audience is awesome. THe kind where if anyone falls down or is getting hurt, everyone rushes to help. In Austin, though, there are more jackasses. A lot of it depends on the band and the location.

ah, not too many of them at this concert. Other than the threats and stuff another guy was trying to protect his girlfriend or something silly like that, so anyone who got withing a foot or two of them he flipped out on. He grabbed this one guy by the neck and started threatening him and stuff. And there were alot of losers who kept their elbows up too.
But the show itself was really good, I remember them opening with pinion, playing Something I can never have, Head like a hole, Closer, March of the pigs, Ruiner, Wish, Hurt, You know what you are(?I forget what the title is?), With Teeth, The Hand that Feeds and a few others. I don't really remember him playing anything off of The Fragile.
EDIT: I can't believe i forgot to mention the Dresdon Dolls, they were amazing, way better than I thought they'd be. The played an awesome cover of War Pigs, which is pretty great considering it's mostly just drums and piano

Yeah, it is.
I just noticed that I had the lyrics to Closer wrong all this time...
I thought it was "You can't help my observation, you can't help the hate that it brings, you cant help my absence of faith, you can't help my everything"
When its actually
"You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that
It brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my
Everything
Help me tear down my reason, help me its’ your sex i
Can smell
Help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody
Else"
I would pay an obscene amount of money to see NIN live. I'm not kidding either.
I'm not sure how much I can afford at the moment. If I was ready to shell out $200 or so, I'd already have a couple of tickets. But I'm hoping to get one from $50-$80. I'll most likely be looking for desperate scalpers.
I figure they'll be back in town at some point in the next year, so I'm not all that desperate. I'm going to scope out the area and see what I can come up with.
Heh...that sounds like fun. Trent said they're going to go back for another round in the US right after their current tour becuase of all the people that didn't get tickets. I have confidence that I can believe in that.
If not, I guess I'm screwed and should just hope there'll be a new live DVD coming out.

It's up to par, but given the time he could've done better songs than Getting Smaller and The Collector. And more thought could've been put into Only, I am really forcing myself to like it. Otherwise, it's a rather flawless album.

Well, some of us like it a lot, and this has become a good NIN/community thread for the NIN fans to gather and talk. Read the thread, it's changed from about the album to general NIN and community discussion.
Yep. Much like what the Tool thread has turned into, a fan/community thread rather than stuff that's strictly about the music or a specific album.

Meh there is an artical in the latest spin magazine outlining what happened with tapeworm, it came out much more commercialised that what trent wanted it to and while maynard was all for it trent decided to scrap it. I doubt anything will ever come from the project.
He also says something about getting to the stage where he no longer wants to make music as NIN but simply as trent reznor because he feels that he has moved too far away from what NIN initially ment to him

I actually think that would be a good idea, NIN isn't really what it used to be imo. While he still makes amazing music, its not the original NIN, but then again, bands grow all the time. And they don't change their names, so who knows?

OK, I was jsut saying that NIN is a different band now pretty much, and I think people were kinda shocked when this one came out. I mean, it really was a different direction for him or "the band".
And I think that him changing his band name to Trent Reznor or whatever, really wouldn't be that bad of an idea. Because its a whole different NIN now.

I don't like the name changing idea. Leaving behind something so big as Nine Inch Nails because you make a different sounding album isn't really right IMO. Plus, the name Nine Inch Nails is really f*cking cool.

NIN has never been a "band". It's been one guys music. It's always been that way.
Every album that Trent has done has been worlds apart from the previous album. Look at the differences between Broken and Pretty Hate Machine. From synth pop to a Grammy for Best Metal Perfromance.

From what I've heard of it that is. Does anyone know how long they will tour? And they are coming back to the U.S. after the other places right?
Yes, they'll be coming back to the US afterwards. I'm nervous though; in a few days, NIN will be here. I'm not very confident that I'll be able to get decent scalped tickets. I also have finals that week.

"If you want to, you'll be able to buy a real deluxe book that the record fits into. It's a super nice thing that will have a big essay from me and a lot of pictures. It's more of a presentation and the artwork that you have now, that maybe you didn't quite understand, you'll see how it all fits into this. You'll get it."
So I'm guessing this is his big "master plan", heh...I think I read it's only going to be sold at the Fall tour shows (which will be announced in June!) and online at the site. I was a bit confused at first 'cause I didn't know whether the album would come with it or not but it seems as though it's not...it's just an upgrade for those who bought "With Teeth" already.
I hope that that's not the biggest part of the master plan.

Kage remember that list I did for those 2 cds of NIN? Can you or anyone go through that and tell me which ones you think could be left off and which ones should be added? It's on Page 35. I just need feedback from other NIN fans.
I responded before, I guess you didn't see it? Anyway, I'll gladly go through the list again. I'm not sure how much you want taken off, but here are my edits/suggestions:
Bolded are the ones that I would take off, and my suggested additions are italicized.
Pretty Hate Machine
Down In It
Head Like A Hole
Sin
Terrible Lie
Something I Can Never Have
Broken
Wish
Happiness In Slavery
Gave Up (?)
Suck
The Downward Spiral
March Of The Pigs (The Becoming )
Closer
Hurt
Heresy
Mr. Self Destruct
Reptile
Piggy (?) - A Warm Place is what I would put here.
Ruiner
The Perfect Drug
The Fragile
The Day The World Went Away
We're In This Together
The Fragile
The Frail/The Wretched
Somewhat Damaged
The Great Below (?)
- -
Star****ers Inc. I wouldn't include this, it's a bad intro. Replace with: I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally , Underneath It All or Complication
Into The Void
Where Is Everybody (?)
The Big Comedown
Still
And All That Could've Been
The Becoming (Still version)
Deep (?) I find this unnecessary
With Teeth
The Hand That Feeds
All The Love In The World
Every Day Is Exactly The Same
Only (?)
Sunspots (?)
The Line Begins To Blur
Right Where It Belongs (?)
That's the list the way I would most likely make it. I probably forgot some things, and a lot of my edits are obviously personal opinion, but to me that would be the best way to introduce someone to NIN.
So here's what the new list would look like:
Pretty Hate Machine
Down In It
Head Like A Hole

Something I Can Never Have
Broken
Wish
Happiness In Slavery
The Downward Spiral
The Becoming
Closer
Hurt
Heresy
Mr. Self Destruct

I posted a brief discription of what it's suppose to be a couple pages back...i'm not too sure about it though...i got the information off of www.theninhotline.com
Edit: I just found the post...

Those are the dates so far as on http://www.nin.com/tour I'm missing them in the UK as I'm on holiday abroad when they're playing. :upset: Hopefully they'll be back sooner rather than later, as I absolutely have to see them live just for their crazily energetic live show.

Hello guys. I have some questions about NIN:
first of all, I have the fragile CD. I bought it like 3-4 years ago, and never actually "listened" to it. So Based on Keeth's list I can start actually listening to it, but I need some more feedback on this one, I like some tracks, but It really freaked me out, for some reason....
On another note, I'm looking for NIN videos, And I remember only two that I want to watch: the first one is an instrumental, and it's about a journey through the sewer to some guys mouth. The other one is the video in which there's a man eating meat, and it's full of flies...That's all I remember about those. Help is very welcome. Thanks.

I don't really understand your question about The Fragile. It's my personal favorite NIN CD, and to me is a true masterpiece. You should sit down and listen all the way through it, and you'll probably appreciate it more. A lot of newer NIN fans like the Left disc better, which I do as well, but the Right disc has plenty of hidden gems. Just let yourself imagine what images are being painted by the sound. It's a really layered, huge album that focuses on soundscapes and ambience, so allow yourself to listen to it in that mindframe.
Videos...both the videos you described are from the EP, Broken. If you're a fan of the harder NIN stuff, then you'll love that disc. It's short, but it's full of really heavy material and has become a fan-favorite. I belive that the specific videos are for the songs "Pinion" and perhaps "Help Me I Am In Hell," but I'm not completely sure, as I haven't watched those videos in a long time. There's a VHS called Closure that will be released on DVD soon, and it has all the NIN videos, including the ones you're talking about. I've seen it available at Hollywood Video and Blockbuster, so you could probably track it down and rent it at one of those places. Also you can find most NIN videos at http://www.nin.com/visuals/index.html, so check around in there for songs you're interested in.

Wow, I'm surprised how fresh the new NIN sounds. I just got it today. I love the disco beat in Only. Also Beside You In Time is briliant.

I was slightly thrown off the first time I saw that, but it's actually a pretty good video. Broken is my least favorite NIN release, though. My favorite NIN videos are Perfect Drug, Hurt, and Closer.

With Teeth still growing on me wiht every listen. I've always loved it, but I just listened to it today and I was ecstatic afterwards. The ending stretch of the CD is absolutely great. It's a very cohesive record, and significantly more linear than the Fragile, but not in a bad way. The freshness is accounted for because of a style change, basically the more live-sounding drums and less layering, although there's plenty to be discovered as I learned with the 5.1 mix.

Does Trent actually play the drums on the albums or does he use a drum machine? Is it even him on the recording? I've always been confused on that.

For PHM and Broken, he used a drum machine, but on The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, he came up with the beats, but had a professional drummer play them. He would take the live, raw recordings and loop the parts he wanted and run them through a synth to give them different sounds. On With Teeth, Dave Grohl played drums on several of the tracks and, by the sound of it, it's more of a raw, live drum sound and not looped or synth-ed. I prefer "Trent-style" drums, but it makes for an interesting percussion section on With Teeth. Still, there's a lot of percussive sounds that he did himself, and I think used a drum machine for.

As far as I know, Trent plays guitar and bass on most of the songs. He does all the keyboards and synths, mixing, and a lot of production as well. He also puts in samples and all that good stuff.

Although he doesn't actually play guitar on it, and he looks pretty awkward in that video. Richard Patrick is also in that video, who was NIN's touring guitarist in the early days, and who is now the frontman/writer of Filter.

I love how Marilyn Manson plays a guitar in the video for Personal Jesus. He said himself that he doesn't play and that he only played it because it looked good. I thought it was funny.

I love "The Big Comedown", it's such a great song. That disc is really great. There was a time when that was my favorite NIN CD. The right side that is. I mean, they've all been my favorites at one point in time.
The Fragile is my all time favorite, and that includes both discs. It's a big investment, but listening to the entire thing at all time is great. It's like two different stories that are connected and intertwined into each other. That's the way I see it.

Picking apart the recurring themes and meanings is a lot of fun.
I love that "The Frail" could basically be an intro to both "The Wretched" and "The Fragile".
Also, the use of the "La Mer"/"Into The Void" keyboard themes, and combined with "The Great Below", all the references to the sea. There's so much more to understand and dissect. These are just the obvious things.

Yes, it's hard to keep track. For the The Frail/The Fragile, there's a part where the right-hand piano melody in the Fragile is the same melody as the Frail, and then a part where the right hand is the same...blah blah.
There's so much more, I can't think of anything. There are certain things that link the Left and Right sides, which really make it interesting...the most obvious being the repeated motif between La Mer and Into The Void.

PHM was made only by trent and his computer/software.....
If you have a Windows/PC computer, then there are several options, but they're fairly expensive, unless you have alternate means of aqcuiring them, if you know what I mean.
I don't know about Audio Logic, but on his latest stuff, Trent uses ProTools, which is an Apple program that is pretty much the pinnacle of professional audio software. If you have a Mac, then you can use Garageband, which is an extremely easy-to-use but good quality program, and I think you'd have best results with that.

I don't think you can run ProTools on Windows, no. But you definately can get just as good, if not better, ameteur recording on a Windows. It just tends to be more expensive and possibly a little harder to get acquainted with, but in the end the main thing about Macs is that they make everything easy.
I'm a Windows person myself, but for recording I always use Garageband, which is a Mac program, so I can't offer too much advice on recording on Windows.

To really run protools you need a protools compatible rig. There are demos out there that you can run on a PC or Mac, but for the real deal you need the hardware too.

I didn't like Pretty Hate Machine because it sounded too... 80s.... Except Head Like A Hole, which is another bad@ss song. It's a little too caught up in the chorus, though and it drags on.

Pretty Hate Machine was almost new wave sounding.

I actually kinda liked that Pretty Hate Machine was new wave sounding.
*Bump*
I spent $80 on a ticket to go see NIN in August the other day, and since then I've been wondering what the atmosphere at NIN shows is generally like. Anyone care to fill me in?
As Med said, it's supposed to be intense, crazy, but very very cool.
I have a question about Hurt. When I listen to it, during the verses it kind of crackles i one ear. Is that just my copy, or does everyone's do that?
Yep, that's part of the white noise in the background of that song. Very Trent.
Okay, I've been listening to With Teeth, The Fragile, and TDS. I think that The Fragile is by far their best work. The two disc album set is just a wonderful album. I can't think of one song I dislike. Plus, it's very experimental and each song varies. You have your bad@ss songs like No, You Don't and Starfvckers, you have your beautiful melodic songs like La Mer, and experimental songs like Into The Void.
Man, I just love this album.
123456. In my opinion the best NIN album and one of my favorite albums of all time. Not necessarily the most important NIN release (obviously that would be TDS), but still the best. It covers everything in one epic release.

I agree, but I'm glad he moved on.

Yeah, I don't think another album like that would have worked.

I have only TDS and with teeth should I consider getting the fragile or broken

I love PHM. Amazing that he recorded it all himself. You should consider getting that one, so many classics on it.

Get the Fragile and Pretty Hate Machine. If you really love the harder, guitar-driven edge of NIN, then Broken is always a good one. It's my least favorite of all NIN albums, because it doesn't flow with the progression like the main albums do.
My highest recommendations go to The Fragile.

Yeah, I showed some people TDS expecting them to love it, but they just can't get into it. Which is pretty dumb because I keep forgetting that when I wasn't that into NIN, I really disliked that album. But now that I see everything that goes on with it and its conept and the mood, I love it.

Fragile is the total package of what NIN is capable of.
