ruiner solo is great
Indeed....but its a bit crazy playing it forwards....

03-24-2005, 03:21 AM
what you mean by forwards?
Mabelobe
03-24-2005, 12:02 PM
Because trent has some crazy backwards masking on that solo, i dont know if it was recorded backwards and then played in reverse (making it forwards, but with very strange reverse picking sounds on each notes)...
If you listen for it you can hear it....
But it also sounds like he might have then gone back and layered it with the solo done normally forwards to add depth.....because it doesnt sound completely reversed all the time, nor does it sound completely forward.....crazy stuff....

^^^To get into what? The NIN listening parties? Well, they're all pretty much clubs so I guess it would be the regular venue price. Maybe some have that no cover charge before (whatever time). The one here in Austin is only charging $1 but if you want to pick up the cd that night it's $15.

Anyway, Kage, how was the listening party in Houston?

i heard he went poppy with it, dissapointing since he ripped on marylan manson for doing that and trying to be like trent.
I stumbled across something that might interst you NIN fans.
I was pleasantly surprised to come across a few paintings that have obviously inspired a great deal of NIN aspects.
An American artist named Clyfford Still, who was a leading visionary in the art form of "Color fields." In other words, he would create vague landscapes using different colors and shades to form contrasts:
"His paintings are non-figurative, and largely concerned with juxtaposing different colours in a variety of formations. Still's arrangements are irregular. His jagged flashes of colour give the impression that one layer of colour has been "torn" off the painting, revealing the colors underneath. Another point of departure, Still uses a thick impasto [paints], causing subtle variety in shade across the painting."
When you visit the link below, you'll see exactly what the above paragraph is talking about. And you'll also see a great likeness to a lot of the artwork on The Downward Spiral, an absolutely awesome connection, seeing as how the above paragraph explains almost exactly what Reznor does so well, except instead of painting he does it with sounds to create soundscapes, which also have a visual aura about them. It highlights Reznor's beautiful juxtoposition of visual and audio mediums to gain the desired effect. The Still-inspired artwork of The Downward Spiral is a great visual representation of what Reznor's music accomplishes.
For a look at some of his greatest pieces:

For those who don't read the NIN Q&A's on the official website, here are some wise words from Trent Reznor, on the video for THTF:
"The video for 'The Hand That Feeds' is avaiable online. It was directed by Rob Sheridan and I think it kicks ***. I see a lot of you couldn't figure out if it was rehersal footage or a video or what. Mission accomplished. Who says what a 'music video' has to be? To me, the SAFEST thing I could do is follow in the footsteps of my peers and hire one of a handful of 'cool' directors who would want to come up with a 'clever' concept. I could pretty much guarantee a place on MTV and the director has another demo on his reel on his way to becoming a big, famous MOVIE director. Oh yeah, and I could pay a LOT for it, too. All of that seems dated and stupid to me. 'The Hand That Feeds' is a straight-ahead song that I felt didn't need a big bloated production to support it."
3/22/05.
Overall, I like what he had to say, and I'm glad he commented on the surge of music video directors taking on big, Hollywood blockbusters.

Thanks, but most of us in here have seen it :D
I'm REALLY sorry I haven't posted much on the release party. Do you guys mind some detailed information? I've been putting off writing it because I'm lazy and want to be able to describe it right, without spoilers (unless you don't mind a few minor spoilers)
Don't worry, it's hard to remember enough to include spoilers anyway. But I might mention moods of the songs, maybe? (Ie... this song is upbeat, downbeat, similar to (insert previous NIN song here).) If that's too far, then fine, I wont' go into much detail.
But I promise I'll do it tomorow, as for right now I have to get up early tommorow and I'm already staying up too late.
Magicaltroll
04-02-2005, 12:21 AM
Hmm... I'm not sure how you could really post spoilers unless you described the song in full detail and everything, just give us a little taste of what each song is like :D
Let's just say, in my opinion, this album contains the best fast-paced song and the best slow-paced song NIN ever made. There are some competions for slow-paced (Hurt, Something I Can Never Have, And All That Could Have Been). But this was so different.
As for the fast-paced song (and I mean fast-paced, it was mindblowingly good and the best fast-paced NIN song ever, I think.
And my favorite song from the album is probably the one from which the teaser clip came from. That song was amazingly good...the teaser portrays somehwat the mood, but does the song nothing close to justice.
But if I get into this, I'll end up staying up all night :)
Which normally I wouldn't mind but I really do have to get up early tommorow morning.
'night everyone.

Hmm, they should make this the official NIN thread...what does it take to make a thread official?
Magicaltroll
04-02-2005, 11:44 AM
Yes... That got rid of all my doubts for this album :D
Man, I really can't wait. But I don't think a mod will do it because I think I recall a few people wanting to make some thread into an official thread, but they said it was fine the way it was or something.
I might try to talk to Bartender about it, he's the only mod that I've ever really "talked" to on here.
Six Foot Revolver
04-02-2005, 11:45 AM
It would be pretty cool but I don't think they will
I think they might have stopped creating new official threads. If we keep it going, though, it will be just as good.
Six Foot Revolver
04-02-2005, 02:27 PM
There was a pretty big rage against the machine thread a bit back and they said no to turning that into an official. IMO they should turn the Judas Priest and Beatles threads into officials too.
I must express some distress I've experienced with Trent in the past weeks. His explanation for playing small venues on the tour (the first time out in years) is that they didn't know how big the demand was for NIN tickets.
Well, I call bullshit. They and everyone else knew damned well that NIN still has a massive fanbase. That is absolutely one of the most pretentious things I've ever heard.
Magicaltroll
04-02-2005, 05:22 PM
Yeah, if they would of played the Thomas and Mack (I'm not sure why I put the name... :D) around my city then I would of definitely got tickets.
But since the venue was REALLY small, I didn't have a chance... They're playing at a bigger place, but tickets are 80$ and I think they're sold out anyway.
I was a day off :(
Let me start off by saying that my memory is pretty hazy of the album. I stupidly didn’t bring with me a track-list or anything to make mental notes about each song, and I was able to keep track for the first 5 or 6 songs, but after that I got distracted. I remember some specifics, but if I’m wrong about something, then it’s simply because I forgot. As a whole, the album was very cohesive, and had a great variety of songs. I’ll go over the highlights of the album, as I cannot remember every song anyway.
I got to Numbers (the club) around 8:00 and there was a fairly good-sized line. They said the doors would be opening at 9:00, but they actually started letting people in slowly at around 8:30 and I think I got in about 8:45. We perused around for about 15 minutes and found a really good seat (not an actual seat...it was just a place on the stage where bands normally play that was elevated and against the wall) (although the seat was good, the sound wasn’t great…way too much bass, but still good). And no alcohol for me, I’m underage, and I turned down all offers from drunk chicks. ;)
At around 9:00 they started playing NIN videos in order of release: Head Like A Hole, Down In It, Happiness In Slavery (which I was surprised about), Pinion, Wish, March Of The Pigs, Closer, Into The Void, and Star****ers Inc.
Then they did an NIN “history” which was basically clips from every music video (including Sin, Hurt, and We’re In This Together Now) and some live footage. Finally, at 10:00, the real event began.
The piano-tinged and odd All The Love In The World opened the album. That song was great and really got the mood for the album started. It was a weird song for NIN, but this album is really different than anything else he’s done. That was a great song.
People were starting to dance and get crazy on the floor. I stayed out of that scene for the most part, I was there to listen to the music and that’s it. Some assholes decided they would start up a mosh pit at a club, so at that point I just sat on the sidelines and enjoyed.
You Know What You Are was absolutely incredible. It’s a song with a very fast-paced tempo and cool drumbeat, and it was my favorite fast/heavy NIN song ever made. It was perfection, an adrenaline rush from beginning to end with awesome vocals.
The Collector, I don’t remember much about, but what I do remember is that it was a good song, but probably the weakest song on the album. I remember it didn’t have anything in particular that caught me ear and didn’t flow that well (which is a good thing, because every other song had something like that).
Next was The Hand That Feeds, which was AWESOME when it was played really loud like that. That song really got my adrenaline pumping It REALLY fit in well with the album. And if you’re afraid that the song is indicative of the album, it’s not. It’s the most straight-forward song on the CD, and most of the other songs keep that classic NIN style, but all of them are really original.
Love Is Not Enough was great. I can’t remember what it sounded like :upset:, except for the main line “Love is not enough,” with plenty of synth and guitar in the background. And the end breakdown was really cool synth work.
Everyday Is Exactly The Same had a big drum-sound and was a great song.
After that it sort of blended together. It flowed very nicely, and EVERY song had something great about it. It sounded different from any other NIN material yet, I assure you of that, and in a good way. It mixed very well together dark overtones and mellowness with a heavy edge.
And the biggest highlight of the album for me, It was either Beside You In Time or The Line Begins To Blur that the teaser trailer was taken from. It was nothing like the trailer. It was a huge buildup song that started with a sparse drumbeat and some quiet keys/guitars with some nice soft singing from Trent. It was dark song, that kept building up until the huge chord progression. LOVED that song.
Right Where It Belongs was a great closer, the softest song on the album and also one of the greatest.
Sunspots was a cool loud/soft song with piano and some great guitar work, another favorite. Some idiots were trying to mosh during it, but it didn’t exactly work out. There were some very mosh-able songs on the album, though.
At the end, there were huge applause. I loved it. I cannot wait until May 3rd.
Sorry about the lack of detail, I'm really stretching my memory here, and a lot of parts I was overtaken by the bass, but it's a good thing, as there will be more surprises when you hear the album. Don't download the bootlegs that have been surfacing, wait for the real thing. This album is amazing.
EDIT: Here are some pictures of the actual party. I'm in a few of them(# 33, I'm the one standing in the very background, and #13 I'm there sitting next to the red light), but in the background so you won't really be able to see me unless you're really looking hard.

I love both, probably the Fragile slightly more, but I like each for different reasons. I'm glad you like The Fragile, though, I had a feeling that you would. You'll probably like Left better than Right, but Right is still amazing, just takes longer to get into.

 i was just about to comment on how the left owns the right, i think the right is more like TDS and that's why im a little off with it...If with teeth turns out like the left side of this beast i will be happy. Cheers for the reccomendation :thumb:
No worries, I think Right will come around for you. At first, I agreed that Left blew Right side out of the water, and I think that it is still the superior side and probably the single best disc NIN have ever released (with great competition, of course, not only from TDS but from Still (which I think would be to your liking)). But I think Left is the only disc that ever really hit me right off like that for NIN...the rest of the stuff had to grow on me, but once it did, it really did.
There's a lot of replay value, with so much going on in each song that you can always discover something new, which gives the material a good longevity. I still reccommend you give the other discs more of a chance to consume you. :thumb:

a while ago i was listening to Reznor host some UK radio show online and he was answering some interesting questions. When asked which one of his works he was most unsatisfied with he said "The Perfect Drug". Honestly, i guess i can say that is also one of my least favorite songs. Anyway, he played his favorite bands and that one song that is going to be on the "With Teeth" import, "Home". He also answered some stuff about his worse on-stage injuries, being banned from Nashville, and some other stuff. Here's the link if anyone is interested:

@misunderstood--Thanks for the link. As for Perfect Drug, I think that's a really cool song but I find it obvious that the usual time and meticulous dedication that Reznor normally puts into his songs is somehwhat lacking. The video for that is my favorite NIN video, though.

Oh, and i agree with "The Perfect Drug" being a cool video...i actually like the video and the song...but just not one of my personal faves.
I've already been blown away at the listening party, and blown away I was. Trust me. But I'm still not downloading that song, so I can be blown away again on May 3rd. :)
Perfect Drug is good, but more of an experimental outlet I guess before The Fragile came out. Not an amazing song, but cool anyway.
@Madeyadams: I was referring to a concert bootleg, I have downloaded one and a few new songs were played ( With Teeth, the hand that feeds, love is not enough, you know what you are, home, the line begins to blur)

Actually my friend had it and told me, and I couldn't resist... But its great, it was the song With Teeth. It was great.
Late, but great album preview. :) Personally this is one of the album releases I'm most looking forward to this year, as I absolutely love The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, so if this combines their fast paced songs, with their slower, more relaxed ones better than they have done before, I really can't wait for it. Personally I think the first half ofThe Downward Spiral is my favourite collection of songs they've done so far, as the second half is a bit weaker, but that changes all the time.
Med, I didn't know you were an NIN fan. That's awesome. I think you'll really like this album, as a lot of it does somewhat reflect the first half of The Downward Spiral. Good things are in store.

"My plan right now is that I'm actively writing again and I would hope that by the end of this tour, in a year's time, there's another record ready to go. It feels that good to me. So, we'll see what happens."
That means we might be able to expect an album in less than 10 years. :naughty:. In all seriousness, it would be amazing if there was another album released in a year. Maybe he realizes that he'd better buckle down before age really catches up with him.
From what I've gathered, though, the next album will be centered on more mellow songs. That would definately be cool.

When did I ever complain about people not supporting him? That doesn't really bother me, I was talking about the excitment of buying the CD on the first day it comes out and having something exciting and fresh to listen to. I guess some people just don't care about things like that. Sad, really.

Do you even know what the hell he's talking about in this song...or what issue he may be addressing? I don't know but to me it seems like he was talking about the fact that some men feel "powerful" and/or gain self-confidence by letting everyone else know that they have a big "gun" or pen!s...it is an affirmation of their masculinity....and they do this because of the stereotypical idea that society has of men. It could be about his dear friend Tori Amos and the fact that she was unfortunately raped...He might be singing it from the rapists perspective... Or, as i've read before, he's simply making fun of gangster rapping and how alot of the time all they talk or rap about is their dicks and how easy it is to get women ....So, either way you look at it, those lyrics are just fine and well thought out...and were put into a certain "simple" way that obviously many people out there don't understand.

Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
Okay...I've given it the old once through.
Do....
not....
like....
it.
Every song sounds exactly the same. Same tempos crawling in the 90's to 110's save for a couple tracks, same instrumentation, same treatments on all vocals and drum sounds, and worst of all in it's delivery...same pathetic stabs at doing hokey pop-enunciations on the vocals.
"WITH..AHHH-Teeth-AHHHH"
WTF?
The programming sounds really stripped down, and I know it was supposed to be like that, but in the finished product, it comes off sounding amateurish and rushed. Usually NIN albums present some new synth or weird distortion on the guitar that you've never heard before, usually they rewrite the manual for softsynths or hardware pieces, but here everything sounds like either a rehash of previous albums, or an unabashed ode to this crop of "retro" rock going around the last few years. I'm not sure if when Trent explained the simplified nature of this album that he was not really obfuscating the phrase "run out of ideas"
There were a couple of songs where I could almost envision some fat middle aged guy who hasn't gotten the point that he'll never be a rock star or that his lyrics are not deep clanging away on the karaoke mic.
Then there are others, of course led by the atrocious "The Hand That Feeds", where I almost wanted to synch up my hips in a giant swaying motion and chicken neck in a mockery of ****-rockist athemism at it's worst.
WILL YOU BITE? THE HAND? THAT FEEDS YOU?
seriously....it sounds like he's actually expecting you to answer the question.
Yeah Trent, my teeth are gnashing and my emo-cut locks are flailing in unison.
Feel that portamento preset!!!!
RAARRRGGH!!!
*slams mic down*
The only redeeming portion of this album IMO is the two song block of "The Line Begins to Blur" and "Beside You In Time" which sound like a much needed reach back to classic NIN song structure, and a strange departure into uber-compressed and laid back trance respectively...but all that is rendered moot when the closing track intrudes a few minutes later with it's mopey generalizations and gimicky crowd samples that seem plucked straight from the blueprints of a 1999 Hard House Anthem. If the writer of the ubiquitous, and ultimate song of self-pussification "Children", Robert Miles, got together for a leisurely evening of decor and gardening tips with Trent Reznor, this would be the result....and unfortunately.....must have been.
Sorry, but I'm not gonna cry just because you have a piano and some filtered vocals.
if I could give out lashings with a rattan cane to denote my displeasure with an album, you can bet Trent Reznors *** would hurt worse than a Singaporian vandal.
The final observation I gleaned from the 50 minutes I now believe I wasted listening to this "album" is this...
There is only one thing worse than someone who writes formulaic, overly accessible music...
someone who tries to and fails.

I've got the album preordered and I've been listening to the leak for 2 days now. Not really sure what to make of it. I guess I was hoping for something fitting the calibur of TDS or The Fragile. There's some catchy lines in here and good moments, but that's not really what I listen to Nine Inch Nails for. There's about 3 songs that I enjoy, the rest seem a bit bland..
NIN is my second favorite band and I was really hoping that Trent would come through with another mind blowing offering of great music to listen to, love, analyze, and appreciate. The lyrics dont appeal to me as much as Trent's other offerings, and there's a lot of areas where the music is almost a chore to get through. I'm dissapointed but at least I'll get to see NIN live soon, and I'm pretty sure they're not losing any ground in that area.

Fu(kin' relax, dude. I think everyone is entitled to interpret any d'amn song which ever way they want. Besides, part of that was taken from an interview:
".....The record was nearing completion. I had written those lyrics pretty quickly and I didn't know if I was going to use them or not. To me, Downward Spiral builds to a certain degree of madness, then it changes. That would be the last stage of delirium. So the original point of "Big Man With a Gun" was madness. But it was also making fun of the whole misogynistic, gangsta-rap bull****." --Trent R.

And the song itself is jsut great, I can't really describe why I like it so much... But I don't think it is my favorite song on TDS, I'd give that one to I Do Not Want This.

I can see that. But people here have heard it before it was on the radio, so they maybe don't see it like that. Sure, it gets radio play, but that doesn't mean it's crappy.
Indeed. And the lyrics are amazing on it as well....
I do not want this was probably my LEAST favorite on TDS but now it is really growing on me, (after 10 years heh) i love the verse piano riff.
Ruiner is by far my favorite tho....simply amazing...but then there is Eraser....ahhhh i cant decide....

I've always enjoyed March of the Pigs, it's so strange and it's meaning is very interesting. I believe it's about the Manson's followers. (the pigs)
At first, I thought it was a reference to Animal Farm.
misunderstood
04-16-2005, 03:21 PM
^^ Thats very interesting. I had also heard somewhere that the song did have something to do with that (Manson's followers). But I also read this a couple days ago:
interviewer: can you tell me who the pigs are?
trent reznor: uhh, it kind of depends which song you're talking about. but, it could be anywhere from...well, for example in march of the pigs... i'm referring mainly to..anywhere from the media to people who i thought were friends that are around me to the kind of.... the issue i think i was addressing was the feeling we got when in america when we attain a certain level of success and it surprises us to see all the legions of people around you who start ****ing with you and um can't wait to see you fail, waiting for you to **** up, ripping you off, trying to use you...the fact that american media in the underground world, you're their darlings, to oops we accidentally start selling some records, and "we have to turn our backs on you" because we're not cool anymore because people know about us now.
interviewer: right, is that "take the skin and peel it back/doesn't it make you feel better," is that what that line's about?
trent reznor: right.
Either way...I like that song alot too.
Ruiner is my all time favorite song from TDS. At first it was my least favorite, but it grew on me so much and now it's my favorite. I think I've talked about why quite extensively further back in this thread.
And March of the Pigs does indeed seem to have some kind of reference point dealing with Animal Farm. It definately uses some of the same imagery to deliver a similar message.
I'm a VERY serious NIN fan and I love Closer. I don't know where (not sure who said it) got the idea that most serious NIN fans hate that song. Sure, it's overplayed but the end build up is insanely good. It showcases some of the best electronic work from Reznor yet. There are so many different layers and elements that come together there. Same goes for most of NIN songs, though.
Magicaltroll

But my favorite song off of TDS for a long time was The Becoming.
"Downward Spiral builds to a certain degree of madness and then changes"
[In reference to Big Man With a Gun]
That's an interesting quote, because I had never read it before, but it's exactly what I've always talked about in my view of the concept of the album. I think there are two major shifts in the album...one after Closer and one after Big Man With A Gun.

I think most NIN fans would say Broken next, but I definately like PHM over it by a mile. FDTS is worth checking out, although it's not exactly something a person who is not a heavy NIN fan should have, I don't think.

PHM is awesome, but maybe more 80's electronica than you're used to, still one of Trent's best though
Fixed is ****ed up, and only worth getting if you find it under $10. Trippy remixes of songs off Broken.
I agree with Kage on FDTS. It's one of the better remix halos, but not exactly aimed at the casual fan.

Actually, the Macintosh file is a version of The Hand That Feeds converted to Garageband format, which is a Mac program that allows multi-track instrumental and MIDI recording. Basically, it's a program to record music, and a pretty damed good one, considering the price/ease of use.
So basically, they allow you to mess around with the different tracks of that song and make your own remixes and even add your own parts.
