Only having seen Ju-On: The Grudge and Ringu, what are other interesting movies. I've been recently interested in serious Japanese movies since I saw an ad about Ju-On: The Grudge and bought it from our video department's catalog.

I'm looking more towards freaky movies, like horror or just plain screwed up (RE: Code Veronica X style messed up).

He's a director. He's directed such films as Visitor Q, Ichi the Killer and Audition.

battle royale - 42 eighth graders are put on an island and forced to kill each other by the government. they are given weapons (that range from pot lids to machine guns) and other essentials to survive. great story, some cool fights, and it's kids killing each other, what more could you ask?

A good Japanese movie is Returner. About a girl who goes back in time to stop an alien invasion. It's a lot better than it sounds.

Takeshi Miike.

Yes!

This man is the best director out there!

try audition and Ichi the Killer.

Hisbest work (while perverted as hell, and graphic to extremes) isnt really a horry, but is well worth checking out. Its called "Visitor Q"

Akira. Great movie, but the novels are better. It's anime, but don't let that turn you away from it.

Personally, I thought Akira sucked, I dont get all the hype that film has.

It didn't suck, but it wasn't as good as everyone said it was.

Try Princess Mononoke, or End of Evangelion(although you really need to see the whole series to watch this)

If your looking for horror, I would check out:

A Tale Of Two Sisters

The Eye ( Not Japanese, it's in Cantonese.)

BTW- I would recommend The Eye first. It drags on a bit at parts, but there is one scene in particular in which I think I peed a little.

I've already seen the Eva series and its movie, same with Princess Mononoke, along with a few other anime series/movies.

The Eye
Battle Royale
Tale of Two Sisters
Audition

sounds like a nice start-off.

Rep ++ for your avatar. I loved NGE, especially End of Evangelion. It was just ****ing brilliant.

I know, End of Evangelion was just insane, he made that to spite everyone and everything in the series to piss off the fans.

I love Komm Susser Todd, such a depressing song fitting for Third Impact.

When I first saw it I was shocked when Asuka's Eva was completely torn to pieces.

Trivia: That text on a computer screen was one of many death threats Hideo had received after the end of series.

I really wish I saw that in some sort of theater, it would've been amazing.

A good French movie is called Jean De Florette. That had such a sad and twisted ending though:(

So I ordered The Eye from our video department, so I'll watch it once it comes in. If I like that then I'll get Tale of Two Sisters next.

I just saw Lady Snowblood after hearing about it for quite some time, and it was excellent.
Yuki's family is nearly wiped out before she is born due to the machinations of a band of criminals. These criminals kidnap and brutalize her mother but leave her alive. Later her mother ends up in prison with only revenge to keep her alive. She creates an instrument for this revenge by purposefully getting pregnant. Though she dies in childbirth, she makes sure that the child will be raised as an assassin to kill the criminals who destroyed her family. Young Yuki never knows the love of a family but only killing and revenge. /IMDB

I also recomend any of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies.

Have you seen Manon des Sources, the second part of it? Almost as good (although the second book isn't quite as good as the first) and it has a naked Emmanuelle Beart in it. Bonus. It also has one of the great film moments of all time in it! Definitely watch it after JDF. Daniel Auteuil who plays Ugolin is one of my very favourite actors, he really is excellent.

As for Japanese movies you've got to go for Kurosawa - particularly 'The Seven Samurai' and 'Yojimbo' (which A Fistful of Dollars was based on). They're both classics.

Kurosawa, imo, is the greatest filmmaker of all time.

My favorite Kurosawa (other than the two mentioned):
Ikiru
Rashomon
Ran
High and Low
Stray Dog
The Hidden Fortess
Sanjuro-the sister piece to Yojimbo

I've wanted to see Rashomon for ages now. I can never seem to find it (when I even remember to look).

I also liked him in Le Huitieme Jour, very convincing.

I know about Kurosawa, I've been introduced to his movies by my friend years ago. I remember we found a collection of short tales at the video rental store and watched it. He's a good director. We got to watch Seven Samurai in Japanese class, that was sweet:cool:

Battle Royal

it's about a society that has gone to pot (to put it nicly), so each year the government of japan get a class of school children and put them on an island, where the kids have to kill each other to stay alive (the idea being that only one will live)

its a really good film

i would say some animes but it would take ages to name the ones i like

It makes a lot more sense if you've read the graphic novels; the film seems to have tried to do too much and cover too much in too little space.

Yeah, I've read them. They do make more sense. I used to be obsessed with it like in 6th grade. They should have made the movie longer so it could make more sense.

I had been reading about Japanese Bosozuko (sp!?), the bike gangs in Japan and it reminded me of Akira - especialy the beginning.

Visitor Q by Miike Takahashi, he has already been mentioned in this thread.

This film is made in the style of a documentary form the perspective of the father of a very dysfunctional family. It railroads taboos like there is no tomorrow. Some people would be to sickened to call this art, but in a very very dark way it is. Its also very funny, if you have a very dark sense of humour.

Ive just finished watching it litteraly 5 minutes ago. The image at the end of the film is as perverse as it is beautiful. And the music they play is great. the screen goes blank just before the credits roll, and the woman sings (in japanese, so our versions will have thelyrics on screen as subtitles) a very important and moving line that sums up the entire film.

the is not just the best film to come out of Japan, imo its the best film in the world.
