Alright, I do realise this there seems to be some hatred for this movie here, but I can't understand why. I thought that it was one of the most suspensful film I'd seen in a while. I really enjoyed the movie, though I do find it hard to take seriously now after watching Scary Movie 3 (another great movie).
Why the hatred?

I thought it was really good up until you saw the alien. It would have been much better if you didn't know what they looked like. As soon as the alien showed itself, the movie went to hell and I had no desire to watch anymore.

'Hey, look at us! We're an advanced alien race! Now lets invade a planet covered 2/3 by a chemical which kills us!! And we will just have to pray it doesn't rain ever again!!'
And that's why I hate signs.
maybe they didn't know?
humans are pretty advanced, but i'm not sure even we know everything that can kill us. especially things on alien planets.

yeah, but thats like us saying, hey lets go to mars, then everyone hops out and they are like, oh poop, we cant breath here. Not gonna happen. They would have sent probes and whatnot to make sure it was safe. What would make them pick that world in particular? Especially if it kills them.

I hate it, its just so bland and boring.
Furthermore, if water, a life supporting substance in itself, kills the aliens then why doesnt the atmospheric moisture perpetually burn them?

Given their advanced technology they can travel across the stars. Without that, they're stuck with much the same physical equipment that humans are. It would be easy enough to lock a person in a closet that has a deadbolt, even though humans are smart enough to figure out relativity.

The water issue:
Why not? Humans go through dangerous places to get what they require (Mines, ocean). The aliens only wanted to Harvest the humans. Could this mean that the aliens know the earth is the only inhabited planet? Could it be the last resource they could obtain? Perhaps the aliens didn't have a choice. I think these points should be considered before ranting off about water.

****, I just don't understand why people still think that the aliens are vulnerable to WATER. They're not. They never were. There's one quote that gives it away, and that is when Bo talks about why she doesn't want to drink Morgan's water. It has his amoebas in it. In other words, it's bacteria that hurts the aliens. This is an HOMAGE to War of the Worlds. At the same time, Shyamalan's movie isn't about aliens, it's about demons. Hell, he gives so many **** clues to this and almost makes it blatant just to get people to understand that what the world may think of as aliens, AREN'T. The water represents the baptism of the demons as well as juxtaposing it as an homage to War of the Worlds. If you're going to watch Signs as an alien movie that's supposed to be full of confrontations or whatever, well, you're going to be disappointed. At the same time, you'll miss the entire point of the movie. And signs is not a bad movie. It's a great one, IMHO. This is why the aliens choose hand to hand combat as well. It's to harvest people, or really their souls. It's supposed to be Judgement Day and people are supposed to face their demons, both literal and figurative. When they can't, that's when they get consumed by them or taken away. This is why faith is a central aspect to the film. This is why it's mentioned that 3 small cities in the Middle East (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Mecca) were the first to repel the aliens. This is why so many people were mentioned going into churches and stuff. The first crop circle is in the sign of a PITCHFORK! Which is representative of the devil in its traditional image.

Them being vulnerable to bacteria makes as little sense as water.
As for the film, I don't think I could hate it more.

jastewart and the quote from bj maddog both provide excellent arguments for the movie, and i think anyone who still doesn't like it after reading those just don't want to think too much when they see a movie.

what is the difference between water and water vapor that would allow only one to be deadly to them and the other not? i'm no chemistry major but, there's got to be something there. it can't just be the word "water."
BJ_maddog
02-09-2005, 10:03 AM
Them being vulnerable to bacteria as little sense as water.
Shyamalan should have made them vulnerable to M&Ms or Big Macs instead then.
Maybe the water had to be touched by someone who has faced their demons, thus making it holy water, and repelling the aliens/demons. It is science fiction after all.
But you don't care because you hate the movie.

Why does my hating it mean I won't discuss it, talk about it, try and see it from different points of view?
Did I say I hated it because of "the stupid water thing" or "the stupid bacteria thing"? In fact, did I give my reason for hating it? No, I was just making a comment as a sidenote, so **** you, don't jump to conclusions.
The reason I dislike it so much is because it was (possibly; it's more or less tied with Unbreakable) the most mind-bendingly boring and badly acted film I think I've ever seen. The only thing I remotely liked about it was the underlying thing about Gibson's character (I forget his name) being reassured in his faith, but that was far too little to redeem it for me.

Yea but, water isn't the only place these aliens could've come into conatct with bacteria. There's a million different ways the aliens could've come into contact with bacteria without even touching water.
For arguments sake lets just say it is actually the bacteria they react to, as far as I know there isn't a bacteria around that would just eat away at a biotic being like that in a matter of seconds.
I'm just playing devil's advocate here...

Bartender - I wouldn't insult Unbreakable and put it on the same level of crapness as Signs ;) I mean it wasn't a perfect film, sure, but I thought it was a really interesting interpretation of the classic "super hero" story. But hey I know as many people who hate it as people who like it so *shrugs*
Signs....I guess the idea was promising, but the thing that did it for me was the terrible acting. Maybe it wasn't even so much that - Mel Gibson was meant to play a sleepy, boring character...and he did it really well. But I kept expecting him and Phoenix to just snap out of it and break into some really dynamic and interesting characters. But as it is everyone just seemed really estranged, and unnafected by what was going on. Completely unrealistic in that sense (never mind the part about the water :S ).
I think the idea could of been executed much better. Not like it's the crappest film EVER but I really didn't like it at all, compared to other films I've seen anyway :)

I think they both suffered from more or less the same thing, which you pretty much said in the second half of your post.

That was more or less my problem with it. On a base story-line level (without subtext and such) Signs was about how an average American family, with little enough in the way of special skills of any kind, would be able to react in case of such a situation; the idea being that they couldn't do much. Fair enough, but that makes for a godawful film to watch.
In the face of that, the subtexts of facing demons and regaining faith (which I did quite like) just weren't enough to salvage enjoyment of it, I thought.

While there weren't shock images mixed with blood and gore, it was just as scary. M. Night did a great job of making you believe that it could actually happen.
