That is true...
When I was 18 I pulled a women with both legs broken out of her car that was on fire.
It's not anything though. I believe anyone would do the same thing in the same situation.
I believe that all people are inherently good.

Actually after josiah said we've all had rough times, you proceeded to ask hypothetical questions relating to your teenage years and how "rough" they were, as if to say "I had it worse." Least that's how I took it.....

In the end im perfectly happy loitering at the bottom of the ladder. Some of the happiest people alive go home with bones aching and smelling like ****.
Faith, i beleive that was WHY i was explaining my "rough times", to show WHY i had to discover myself in order to adapt. I think you missed the point completely.

josiah, my mom comes home smelling of "hospital" (death covered in cleanser smell) almost every day. occasionally she'll come home in some "borrowed" clothes, due to blood spraying all over her work clothes. one time she came to pick me and my friends up from a movie after work, and didn't realize that the entire right side of her shirt was covered in a pool of blood.
i've also had 3 people die on me. 2 that i didn't know, 1 that i was very very close with. i've had countless close calls with death, often from the same people.

Hardly. He's known as the depressing one. He died a sad man, from insanity, given to him by the only women he ever had sex with. Wich was paid for by his friends who felt sorry for him having never been with a women.
No wonder his writings are so dark and depressing.
Study up a bit on his life, you'll find that while his writings are interesting, you can very quickly find where and why they are so dark. His life was dark and depressing, he had few friends, was a social outcast.
Swing your view, study the writings of, for instance, Marcus Aurelius.
Given Nietzsche was a little man who did nothign but write about his won dark feelings, wich one can learn from no doubt.
On the other hand, you have Marcus. One of the greatest rulers the earth has ever seen.
Such a drastic difference in their writings.

Since we're all telling sob stories (i'll cry you a river then you can build me a bridge so I can get over it)...........
Try waking up every day seeing the man who brought you into this world suffer from a disability which will most likely lead to a premature death. He may not live to see his children marry and start a family of their own. He may not see his potential grandkids. He doesn't go to the mall or other large stores because he can't walk more than 20 yards without getting severely out of breath, even though he is clearly toting a lightweight portable oxygen tank on his shoulder. Sure, he could use the hover-round or some other means of getting around, but he says he doesn't use it because there are people who need it more (albeit not many...). Because of said disability, he was forced into early retirement (right before a big promotion....how's that for irony...) causing his wife to work numerous minimum wage jobs to pay the bills. I could go on and on......but it's pointless......it won't change anything. Not only that........he doesn't let it get him down so why should I? But sometimes, it can't be helped......feeling sad...........
Josiah

He's on disability. She now makes a little more than minimum wage ($8.00 an hr). She doesn't have anything past a GED though. Doesn't mean stuff isn't expensive. She thought her husband was going to support her....he did....and then BAM. **** happens. We have very little left over each month. But things are starting to look up as far as that goes.......I hope........

it's the one reason i can't go into hospitals. i break down if i'm in a hospital for more than 5 minutes. i've only gone in once in the last 8 years, and that was to see my grandpa when they told us he had days to live. i had to leave the room 9 times in the half hour i was there. he's back up on his feet now, though. he fought through it like crazy.

What exactly is Aikido? What's it most comparable to?
Josiah
01-25-2006, 02:31 AM
" Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title 'O Sensei' or 'Great Teacher'). On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement."
Taken from the introduction page of http://www.aikidofaq.com
Comparable to Jujitsu or Judo. Though it lacks in striking (there are no aikido strikes), where as Judo and Jujitsu have striking elements.
Aikido is based a lot on circular motions and deflection. Many of the moves are rather devistating in so much as the attacker can be thrown rather far and hard. Lots of throws, locks or throws that involve lock elements.
derryk
01-25-2006, 02:38 AM
So it's all based around ki? Hence the whole "using your opponents energy against him" thing?
Sounds pretty cool.
On a brighter note, I found out I have bad coordination today. I also have a lot of work for my next drum lesson. And I have to coach a basketball game tomorrow/study for my last midterm. And it's 1:42. And things are piling up slowly..

Yes, there is also a whole side to aikido that gets into the "Ki" stuff. the unbreakable arm, unbreakable stance, etc
Uses some interesting techniques to illict physical responses.

Why does my ex girlfriend always show up at times I NEED to concentrate?
I was at the last review class for my math exam and she turned up and sat in perfect view.
She was wearing these low rise burgundy jeans with a brown belt and this cute black low cut top under a black pea coat that was just clinging to her hips.
She had her hair around her face like I like it and I just couldn't stop staring.
I spent all an hour and a half writing her a letter that I won't give to her and left early.

Odd the exchange rate is way better then last I was there too. Where were you?
Us surfers, we're always in costal towns. Smaller places, going to the smallest sodas around.. Playa Grande, Hermosa and Domincal being my favorite breaks.
San Jose is the biggest **** hole in the world though. However I highly recomend the Hotel Musac (Music maybe?), just down from the coca cola bus station. If you do have to stay there...

I hear that. Costa has never ceased to amaze me as far as nature and beauty. The monkey bridges just blow me away when I see them being used. Everywhere I've been.. it's like walk 5 mins in a given direction and you're in the middle of a tropical forest.
Messin with the army ants while high has to be one of the funnest things. Crazy how they make the paths through the forests. I'd say also the parrot drinking beer in Jaco, the monkey throwing fruit in Tamorindo and the crazy snapping turtles that appeared in our rooms in dominical.
We bring a lot of t-shirts, paper, pens, etc.. smaller towns we'll just open a box up and start handing stuff out to kids.
Amazing place. Go for the surf. Stay for the culture. Happiest place on earth.

Ah not been there during that time. The surf spots are a bit outside of town, Hermosa for instance.. hour walk south down the road. Or Jaco's an hour north walk up the road depending on how you look at that.
If you're ever there, go to hermosa, there is a small blue painted motel place, only a couple rooms. Great place, serves breakfest in the morning, igauna's will wonder into your room.. as will sapping turtles!

Really? It's a generalisation thats it's a thick head and sounds horrible? I have pinstripes on the double headed toms at the moment, people have seen them on here on my kit so no i'm not making it up. I've had them on there for awhile beleive me they are horrible. Anyone who's played decent heads will say the same. They are dynamicly limititing in so many ways. I don't mind em for practice but it's really hard to enjoy the sounds they make when you've heard something nice like an amb or even a G1!
I never justify a purchase I make, I was a moron and bought pinstripes because they were cheap, just like I was a moron for buying aquarian PII's for the kick drum batters. I went against my own advice when you look at heads you have to remember one simple thing thats always true. You can always add muffling IF you want it, any head thats thicker or has anything on it more then one ply is a muffling head or a gimmick.

thats exactly it. and the thud is one of those voices, and its the drummers choice whether thats the voice he wants too have. buddy rich is his own drummer, he chose the heads he wanted to use to voice his drums. we respect, and even use his choice as a reference, but that doesnt make his choice universal.

thats exactly it. and the thud is one of those voices, and its the drummers choice whether thats the voice he wants too have. buddy rich is his own drummer, he chose the heads he wanted to use to voice his drums. we respect, and even use his choice as a reference, but that doesnt make his choice universal.
Yes, that's a valid point. However if one chooses to make "thud" his sound. Then that person might as well buy an export and call it even.
Jim's (I think) point is. When you have a well made drum, it's made to sing out. It's made to be a drum. It's made to go.. Dooooon.
If you want that thud drum, that's cool. No sense wasting time, money, good drums and so forth on it though.
By using a pinstripe head you are taking AWAY from the drums sound.

Exactly, thats like buying a sonor delight and tossing hydros on it, get a CB 700 tune it the same and you wouldnt tell a difference.

thats not the point im making, if the person who bought it wanted that sound, who are we to say there wrong. who are we to say that the noise you described is the sound of a drum, drums can make a million different sounds, none of them are specifically right or wrong.

theyve still grown as drummers and people though, they changed there voice, and it was there choice to change it.

i dont much mind the sound of my teachers old export, his bass drum is amazing.

They sure can, but they will only make one sound with a hydro or pin.

Well we play the odd's here..
Odd's are that somebody doesn't know the potential their drums hold and short change themselves by purchasing "pre muffled" type heads.

im talking past that, if a seasoned drummer likes pinstripes, hydros, or a two ply head, who are we to tell them "dont buy that, it sucks"
if your going to make a purchase, it should be an intelligent purchase and you should know exactly what you want.
and if theyve done the research, and they chose pinstripes (example)
who are we to tell them to take it back, or to tell them its bad.

Bingo.
And such people don't ask on internet forums. So we can safely assume they aren't in the questioning audience.

saying that something sucks is different from recommending against it. and that's how you weed out the ones who know what they're talking about, and the one's who are just following what someone with a higher post count says.
if you ask someone who knows anything, they'll say "instead of getting hydro's, look into ambs/emps/g1's/etc."
if you ask someone who doesn't know a thing about tuning, they'll say "hydros suck. they sound so bad."
see the difference between the two?

It's about versatility the same thing can be said about sound focus rings on high end drums. Your paying thousands of dollars for a drum thats "pre-focused" Why? Why would you do such a thing when you can simply tune for focus? You can tune a clear amb down MUCH deeper and lower and even more focused then a pinstripe. You don't need these things at all.
Look.. Do you want the tool your sitting behind to be limited no matter how great of a player you are? Or do you want something that can suit ANY idea that comes into your head. Ever play soft on a hydrualic head before? It sounds like tap dancing on a box of zip lock bags. If you want to be a great player having an instrument that can express yourself in any dynamic situation and volume is utterly important.

but it is still the persons choice, maybe the person will never need to express themselves in that way, its there expression to express, if they feel the need for an amb, great, if they feel the need for a pinstripe, even better, there not limiting themselves to just an amb.
Win A Rabbit
01-25-2006, 10:21 PM
suicide is a person's choice. is it the right answer? most certainly not.
by recommending them to a better head, we're still allowing them to limit the ways they express themselves, while at the same time, being able to express themselves in many other ways.
it's like if you wanted to be an artist, and someone got you an 8x12 piece of paper instead of a 3x3. sure, you can just use a 3x3 section of the 8x12, but now you've got much more room for freedom of expression.
man, i'm just throwing these metaphors all over the place. i'm in the zone tonight. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Double Bass Jim

Your not limited with an amb thats the thing, you are with a pinstripe.
And yes you can tune down an amb to sound exactly the same as a pinstripe and they cost less money as well. Do you think anyone with any asperation is going to want to play dead tones forever? Of course not what if a kid gets inspried to play something dynamic and he wasted 100 bucks on a set of pins? It's not like you can add tone to a pin not even if you close your eyes and wish really hard. They suck man and thats all there is to it, I have them and I also have a set of clear hydros.
Expression comes from the players mind, hands and feet. Strangling your kit isnt a form of expression it's a form of retardation which seems to run rampart around here.

And you know what? The best drummer I know personally, uses hydros on some old tamas. He says
"You know what? People do all this talk, then they hear me play, and they tell me how amazing my kit sounds and ask what heads I have on there.... then I love the look when I tell em' hydros, because really, I dont care, they sound good."
I cant aruge with that. Espically since that man has chops and independence out the freken ears, and is a rudimental GENIOUS! Not like... being able to play rudimentally, I mean hes a extremely well known and highly regaurded drumline composer. Total ****ing joy to watch that man write his work. Or play.

well i decided a shower was more important than reading. i hadn't showered since sunday, and i was starting to feel gross. it was at that stage where i'm dirty, but i feel like i wanna get clean. anything past that, and it gets to the stage where i'm dirty and i wanna stay dirty, so i don't shower for a week.
