TOMORROW!
My band is playing our second gig as a full 'unit' (haha, I said unit.... sorry) at El Torreon, one of the only clubs actually IN Kansas City that's All Ages and appeals to the Metal / Hardcore audiences.
All of the money goes towards fixing/buying a new PA system, because the one they have is starting to get pretty messed up.
Tiger Army played there and literally WALKED OUT because they thought it was horrible (it's not THAT bad ****, but those picky bastards were used to warped tour by that point)
4 PM, 9 bands playing from nearly every genre available in KC. Metal, Hardcore, Punk, Pop Punk, Rap (yes a local rapper is "headlining", lol)
We load in at 2:30 man, so excited.
For now I gotta sleep cause I work tonight haha

yee haw i was supposed to work today but it was raining and everything so my dad didn't take me in. but he's paying me for 8 hours anyways because i'm in debt haha.
serious question: i know that last month i worked atleast 40 hours. 50 at most. but my dad only wrote me a check for 28 hours. what do you think i should do? let it slide, or tell him that he owes me more? he's given me a few extra cheques here and there because of the fact that i haven't been able to work about 14 days that i planned to this summer (due to tournaments, lack of things to do, weather, time he leaves for work, etc.) but right now i really need money. i'm down $500 to friends, and with this cheque i'll still be down $140 until around september. with the hours i haven't been paid for, i could break even. any suggestions?

i've been in a band since the day i picked up an instrument. the reason i started playing music was to start a band with some friends.
well today i went to the golf course to work, and my grampa was there. he convinced me to go golfing with him (didn't take much, i really didn't want to work today) and then he even convinced my dad to pay me for a few hours because it was him who got me to golf, etc. i used some rental clubs that actually cost $5 each, brand new (which by the way were way too short for me) and some used golf balls, and i took on my brother for $5. he has about $3000 worth of golf clubs, golfs 4+ times a week, and uses $6 golf balls. i told him to give me 18 shots, and i completely killed him. after abour 4 holes i was in his head, and it was easy as pie through the rest. surprisingly i played good for not having picked up a club in almost 2 years. i didn't take his money though, as he doesn't work, and i'd feel bad taking money from my younger brother.
oh, and my cousin's friend was hitting on me infront of my cousin and aunt. needless to say, it was quite awkward. she was 6'4, which was oddly intimidating.
anyways, that's my day so far. i'm gonna go call some friends, probably go out for a while.

Jim>
Here's yesterday in a nutshell.
About a month ago, I asked Terry Taylor of Hunt Industries (booking company basically) if we could play the PA Benefit show for El Torreon (all money goes towards fixing their busted *** PA) and he put us on it. The show was yesterday.
I told everybody about it in my band and everybody got the day off right away.
Fast forward to last sunday, when my guitarist says he might have to work now because somebody else at work is going out of town that day (friday / yesterday) and they just told everybody Sunday, so he's working instead.
Now, he gets the day off a month in advance (my guitarist) and come 5 days beforehand, the other guy gets it off instead, that's total BS! But as far as I know he's still playing the show, he never said otherwise.
Thursday night I worked from 5 to midnight, and when I got home I took my drumset apart and wiped everything clean to make it shine on stage and stacked it up, ready to load.
Friday morning I wake up at 11AM, shower, shave, and load my drumset up. Bassist shows up at 12 and we load his stuff into his car.
We call guitarist and he's all like "Nah, I got to work today man"
...
So after awhile on the phone trying to convince him he needs to be there for us (it's 2:00PM now and we needed to load in at 2:30 and it's a half hour drive without traffic), we load his stuff into our cars and go over there (down the street), and get into a big argument with his girlfriend about why he's going to work instead of the show.
His GIRLFRIEND was arguing that rather than play the show and leave when we're done (we were on at 4:30 and would be done by 5, they were to be at work by 4) and be 1 hour late for work, they need to just go to work because they need the money.
$7 an hour between the 2 of them that's $14 they would be missing BEFORE taxes. I offered to pay them $20 right there to shut up and pack.
So eventually it ends up as he's not going and he's not playing, end of the story, they're going to work instead. So we unload his **** at his house and tell him if he doesn't go to this show this band is over, and they don't say anything so we unload and leave for the club.
We get there (with our stuff still in our cars, no time to unload), tell the guy we're not playing, and tell our singer we're not playing.
(Singer lives near the club and skated down there in the rain through traffic)
When we got there, still an hour before doors opened, my friends from Smithville and Plattesburg were there to see us (a 45 minute drive), and JUST to see us, and they wasted their day. Bass players family already drove down there and had to drive back because we weren't playing.
SO
I hear he called and wants to talk blah blah blah, still wants to play our other show the 25th, but we're not sure about his dedication so we need to talk to him and if he's not in the band 100% willing to miss work for any gig, he's out.

Due to very odd work schedules (I'm on overnights for the next couple of weeks until the 4th, when we're done with overnights at my store, my bass player works overnights, singer works late nights/overnights, and guitarist works 4 to 9, so yeah), I probably won't see or hear from him until tuesday, which is our usual practice day.
I told him if he wants to talk about it to be there on Tuesday and that she (girlfriend) isn't welcome in my house, no question.
So tuesday we're all gonna sit down and talk about this and we're going to tell him the good old saying: Bros before Hos. He's been with her maybe 6 months now, I've known him for 7 years.

powerstamp, that's like a bigger, more serious version of what's happening in my band. my guitarist spends every free second he has to either hang out with his girlfriend or talk to her, and he's only with us if he finally realizes we haven't called him for band practice (or at all) in a few weeks, so he'll come with us one day, and then it repeats.
well i'm going out right away to see four brothers. i'm not really expecting much from it, but hey, it might be good. anyone see it yet?

Dillinger Escape Plan are freaking amazing.
If you haven't heard them, check out their two singles "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" and their newest one "Unretrofied", their best songs and least-chaotic.
A lot of their songs on the new CD have more of the melody and singing, but it's usually in the middle/end and not the whole song.
Miss Machine = amazing CD.
Plus Chris can tear some crazy **** up on a 3 piece drumset.
Jomofo
08-14-2005, 03:30 AM
Yeah, hes definitely good. I'm just a little less in to them...it's not really the vocals that turn me off, because I like bands like Atreyu (chyea, do stuff! :p). I think the wave of bands getting signed for being that style of music is just making it old. Major record labels are catching on to Indie trends, and the result is...well, lots of bad bands.
