Have you ever seen an actual scary movie, and not one that was really cheesy? I'm just wondering what you all think are some of the scariest movies of all time.

I haven't really seen a lot of horror, but The Shining got me scared the first time I saw it, with the twins and all, as cheesy as it sounds.

That's more of a psychological thriller though.

The Ring scared me when I saw it in Theatres, its just different as opposed to seeing a movie at home.

I have to admit that I was really freaked out by "White Noise", just the whole concept of hearing dead people or "ghosts" through static in radio/television. I was really freaked out for the entire night after I saw it.

When you watch the film in the knowledge that the kind of ghost in that film is believed by many people in Japan to actually exist, yes it is.

Saw was pretty sweet, but it didn't really scare me.. it was just kickass.

Yes Saw was indeed worth watching.
Although rather corny in particular aspects of the movie,
I loved the games that the killer amde his victims go through.
Very sadistic if you ask me...I could think of better methods to kill someone though.

The grudge didn't really do anything for me. Or the ring, or the exorcist or any of that stuff.

Lol, yeah, I saw that when I was little and that freaked me out.

Arachnophobia also made me feel uncomfortable, mainly because I can't stand spiders and that film made my fear even worse. Though nowadays, I'm not so bad.

hmmm... back in the day when I was a little kid I watched the original alien alone in the dark, that was pretty terrifying, I was only like 7 or 8.

The grudge is not scary in the least. Why would people be more scared because people in japan believe it's based on truth? Something like From Hell is much scarier, since it actually is based on truth.

I thought the original, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was pretty creepy. Actually, the other characters were the ones that gave me the creeps--not Leatherface. Hell, he didn't even use the chainsaw on anyone, per se. Still, for it's time, it was a chiller.

"The Ring" was good. "Poltergeist" was a great movie. Same director as "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"--in case you didn't know. He had come a long way by that point. "The Shining" was a terrifying movie for its time. Luigi Fulci's, "Zombie", an Italian horror release from 1980, is an all-time great zombie flick. Some really great gross-out scenes.

I remember seeing, "The Fury" when I was a child, and it disturbed me. Actually, the very last scene where John Cassavetes explodes. Yeah, for a 4-year old, that REALLY got me.

The Shining scared me quite thoroughly, although it didn't really disturb me afterwards. Several years ago I saw The Haunting (the one that's about that house that's alive) and that scared the **** out of me. I was afraid to walk through my own house for a day or so afterwards.

Personally I prefer The Grudge to Ju-On. Ju-On had an atmosphere to it sure, but the scares were let down by tacky effects, and I know effects aren't everything but in this case, it just makes it that much creepier. Scariest scene in The Grudge for me was when she's in her apartment and the phone goes, and it's like her brother or something. And he's like "What room number are you again?" so she tells him and the door goes right after...and you know something's wrong. Then when she climbs back into bed and....ahhhhhh no, I don't even like thinking about it. I thought that was an ace scene ;)

Also props to whoever mentioned Event Horizon! I've actually seen that film panned so much, but it's one of my favs. Dunno if it'd scare me now, but it sure did when i first saw it.

123....well, I saw it at a friends house and the only part that scared me was when it was at the kids party and the alien walked out from around the corner.

I watched it thinking no big deal and then on the way home I was so **** paranoid I was staring at houses and in trees the whole way home.

I dunno, I find psychological horror movies leave a bigger impact on me then stuff like TCM where it's all people dying for no reason.

the grudge wasn't scary at all. it was an interesting movie, though. the grudge made me think about the movie instead of just watch it start to finish. it was a really good story, but it just wasn't scary. still the movie would suck if they added blood and gore and tried to "westernize" it.

Oh. My. God. Don't remind me. That film just scared me so bad I literally didn't sleep that night. The bit on the bus, and the bit in the shower washing my hair was traumatizing after that. *shudder* It's crap like that that gets me, the anticipation and the music, I'm just really sensitive to that. Watching things where you know something's going to happen and the music gives you that feeling in your chest is awful.

Whereas stuff like The Omen, The Shining, The Exorcist didn't scare me at all. Alien and Aliens did because of the creeping around stuff but Predator didn't because I thought the Predator was awesome, Predator 2 as well. I like the gory films etc. And I loved From Hell if only for Johnny Depp's accent and his absinthe.

White Noise I saw in the cinema and it gave you a few jumps but was pretty crap, the first time I saw Signs I didn't even notice the Alien on the roof and the rest was bollocks. Oh and Watership Down scared me as well, and the butcher bird in Animals Of Farthing Wood. :upset:

I think how you get scared depends on the atmosphere of where your watching the movie and what kind of mood you're in. I mean seriously, if your watching a horror movie during the middle of the day your not going to get nearly as scared as if you were watching it at like 1 am. And the movie theaters make it scary because it's so dark and cold in the movie theaters. I watched "The Ring" and "Darkness Falls" in the movie theaters and was scared ****less by them. I went home after "Darkness Falls" and was afraid to go in the dark and stuff like that.

The Shining scared me in the point that the music and the suspense is what gets me. The fact that I was watching it in Surround Sound, with all the lights out, and at 1 in the morning didn't help it either.

The exorsist scared me shitless. I had a phobia of sleeping in bed for a while (i was 10). I watched IT as a child and i scarded the hell out of me. Poltergiest was scary too. But the thing that i saw as a child that scared me the most was a show on ghosts and poltergiests, It had this guy who fell asleep on his stomach with his back pointing up. He woke up in the moringin with "stay out of the bathroom" ****ing ENGRAVED into his back!! scared me shitless! i had a phobia of sleeping on my stomach or without a blanket from that it was intense. But ever since I've been a young child I've loved ghosts and otehr such things.

That was the best part of that movie. It was so cool

And the only scary parts from the Grudge were when they actually SHOWED the ghosts. Disturbing images like that get to me. Stuff jumping out really doesn't do much

But anyways, I watched "Carnival of Souls" last night. It was made in 1962, black and white, yet it still somehow got to me. I guess it was just the way they made the guy look that was so...creepy

I saw the Omen. It was good but I can now look back on it and realise how tame it was.

But anyways, I watched "Carnival of Souls" last night. It was made in 1962, black and white, yet it still somehow got to me. I guess it was just the way they made the guy look that was so...creepy

Is that the movie with the freakshow guys in the carnival and with that midget kid and midget girl? If so, then that movie creeped me out. Since they didn't have special effects to make people look like that, those people must have been actually born like that. *shudders*

When I was really young I was terrified of the child snatcher in chitty chitty bang bang.

Scary stuff. The film, It also freaked me out back then, but now it just looks stupid.

I saw the Grudge a few months ago, and I didn't find it too bad. But on the walk home I got really frickin paranoid and every window with the curtains open was terrifying. Every shadow, every noise freaked me out. It was horrible. To top it all off, we were walking up this road/hill and we saw a guy at the top walking a dog, coming towards us. We never came to him, and when we looked back down the hill we swore we could see the man behind us. It was some scary stuff, because there was no way he could have passed us without being seen.

Obviously it was our minds playing tricks on us but it was still scary.

The movie that scared me most was Jaws when I was really little. Now, it's probably Saw. Imagine waking up in a place where you were forced to kill yourself and you have no clue how you got there.

The remake of the Shining at three in the morning was harsh. Didn't sleep for almost two days :(

The last bit of Audition is a challenge to watch and not squirm about.

When I was young, the chase scene in Chainsaw Massacre scared me because it would be VERY easy for some deranged nutcase to get his hands on a chainsaw, saw your front door in half and come upstairs!

I haven't really seen a lot of horror, but The Shining got me scared the first time I saw it, with the twins and all, as cheesy as it sounds.

That's more of a psychological thriller though.
The Shining=Best.Movie.Ever. The book was even better, it was so cool.

The Exorcist freaked me out... the Shining was good the first few times, but I've worn it out.

But the spider walk scene in the Exorcist was insane...

When I first saw it, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre really bothered me too. The remake was creepy too.

Oh and Zombie movies in general really get me, especially like, the Resident Evil, 28 Days aspects of viruses, which makes it more of a possibility of actually happening one day just scares the **** OUT OF ME! :upset:
