View Full Version : Why did dreamcast fail?

In my opinion the dreamcast was technically miles better than the playstation or any of its competition at the time so why did it fail? It wasn't even that expensive a console really....and the sonic games on it ruled.

A lot of playstation games were released onto dreamcast and dreamcast versions of them were much better visually and were better to play.

To be honest, I'm no expert, the last games console I owned was a NES, and I shared that with my sister. I suspect it's an image/marketing thing. Playstation adverts have always preen pretty dominant. Or at least so it appears to me.

Playstation just had a plethora of really good games that came out all in a row. The main one being Final Fantasy 7, which really put every other game console on the backburner. N64 survived because Goldeneye came out soon after, and then Perfect Dark and the Zelda games. Dreamcast just didn't have much support.

Release dates were bad in comparison with other systems. It had nothing to do with PS1, it had to do with PS2.

You've got your dates wrong, Saturn was around when PSX and N64 launched, DC was around a few months before PS2 and Gamecube launched.

The reason Dreamcast failed, is because Sega announced they were no longer going to support the system. At the time PS2 came out, the Dreamcast already had a user base of just over 6 million. Sega just didn't have the money to fund the system anymore, so quit supporting it and declared bankruptcy.

Dreamcast was the first of the next generation systems. Since it came out before, everyone just figured they would wait for PS2 and Xbox since they'd come out shortly after and would be able to capitalize on any mistakes made in the design of the DC.
Plus, Sega sucks...

Sega is second only to Nintendo. I guess these two companies don't appeal to the majority tastes of the Western world, or at least from what I have seen.

You could say the same thing for any company, Nintendo for example would probably be dead right now if not for Pokemon.

Well, Nintendo started itself as strictly a gaming company, rather than Sony and Microsoft who already had stockpiles to support the consoles.

Actually I think they began as a card company. I'm not sure though.
Either way, were it not for Pokemon, they probably would have went under during the N64 era. Sales were awful and they only released two or three games a month. Since they own Pokemon, it did wonders for their game troubles and they had plenty of money to further system and game development.

NBA 2k2 for Dreamcast was awesome and I don't even watch baskteball very often.
I always thought their games kind of sucked though, the graphics were good, they just didn't have the 'new era' games.

Actually I doubt it. Nintendo has been making profit ever since they started in the videogame business. Keyword=profit. The Xbox has only started to make profit about 6 months ago or so, and I think the PS2 was about 4 months before that. The Gamecube was making profit the day it came out. Sony and Microsoft spent so much money on the their respective systems, it took them a long time to actually break even with their systems. Sure Pokemon was huge for Nintendo, but they were in no way in financial trouble during the N64 era, or even now. :thumb:
By the way, for the people who were wondering when Nintendo started, it was in the late 1800s and they started out with cards. :thumb:

The PS2's hype, squashed the Dreamcast. Sad but true.
On another note, Sony didn't win the console wars so much on account of their money. It was really because they were the best alternative to Nintendo. All the 3rd party gaming developers hated the Big N because they had to pay such high royalties in order to develop games for the N64.
Developers realized that the Playstation was becoming popular and they all began developing more and more games on it, leaving the N64 in the dust.
And I'm pretty sure Square left Nintendo because they were still using cartridges, whereas Sony was using CD's which would allow Square to put a lot more cinematics in their games.
Because PS2 came out shortly after and kicked its ***. I was sad when Dreamcast failed, but quickly forgot about it. Dreamcast did have one of the coolest fighters of all time though, Power Stone. Anyone else remember that game?

Sega's main problem with both the saturn and the dreamcast, In-house game development. They kinda went, well the mega drive was ace, we can do it all on our own now. Big mistake. Thats like abba going, let write and record hundreds of albums a year, and not let anyone else release any. Which is never going to work, so why sega thought that they could develop nearly all the games for their newer systems i'll never know

I'm pretty sure it did involve the raw mass amounts of money that the other companies threw into their systems. Dreamcast was amazing none the less. Playing online was a whole new experience to me at the time. It just didn't have the support and sega was just taking a ****.

I bought it last year...and it got boring really fast. I also bought Fur Fighters at the same time. Really useless game. Oh and Quake III Arena or something completely sucked...the computers were too hard and the controls were WAY too fast.

they died cause they never had the third party support to develope enough, good games to compete with sony. Sony would have about 50 new titles every month, where Sega would have 3 to 5.

i like did her about 15 times this weekend (no lie, and fuk the haterz)
its going awesome. Yesterday we went to her house, and her entire family was gone the entire day. We started off with a shower, and it was gold for the duration.
2 days ago, i took her to my house for the first time. She talked to my mom for a bit (which always scares me) and then we went to the liquor store, i bought a half-gallon of Schmirnoff watermellon vodka, went to a friends, had some major fun over there.
Shes goin to Disney World in September, i told her that was so awesome cause shes goin with like 15 other family members, and she invited me along :thumb:

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Nintendo Entertainment System was the first console with Internet capabilities. You could buy a modem for it and connect to a network web and get information on stuff likke the stock market.
Pretty interesting. Also interesting that Nintendo has chosen not to embrace online gaming since then.

actually the dreamcast had great games. Sony banked on the ability to play DVD's and PS1 games. Sega couldn't afford to make DVD playing in the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast actually sold more systems because of Sony's hype. Sony hyped their machine all to hell, then when someone went to buy one, they saw the ps2's were out of stock for weeks, so they bought dreamcasts.
Sega has never been good at marketing their stuff...at least not since the genesis days.

Dreamcast was released at a bad time. It was ahead of the PS2 and XBOX releases, but it lacked the technology to compete with them while still gaining enough of a revenue to market its games. How many times did you see commercials for Dreamcast, and then think how many Playstation, Xbox, and Gamecube commercials you saw before those systems came out. It all ends up to be one large issue of bad timing. Also, if Sega would have pushed the product more, that might have helped.

The Dreamcast was awesome. I still play it more than xbox and ps2. The graphix for Dreamcast are sometimes better than those on xbox and ps2. It was just bad timing. Maybe if they released it earlier, or later, they could have survived. Some of the games on DC did suck, big time. Lots of games on Xbox suck, big time. Same with the ps2. But Xbox is the worst.

DC had to many arcade games which dont last too long. it was not marketed as well as other game consoles. those are 2 of the many points that were sega's huge flaws.

Yet again im back to help the Game Cube owners. Nintendo is crap. Game cube is just starting to get good because the develpers have descovered its power. Its only now that the game cube is getting on its feet because of RE4. I see that the game cube is visualy better than the ps2 but the ps2 just has better games and develpers supporting it.

That's all just your opinion, yet you state it like it is fact. More importantly, that comment doesn't have anything to do with this topic and is just plain random.
We're are talking about the DC, not about the Gamecube's library.
Edit: And on a side note, pretty much everything you said is flat-out wrong.
