It had its positives and negatives. It's almost exactly 2 hours so it's not really partucularly long. There is quite a bit of slow motion and as most of the film focuses just on a few people it does seem a bit longer than it is. It's absolutely beautifully shot, some of the images are stunning. It does get quite silly and over the top at times (there was some laughing in the cinema I was at), but I look at it as the filming of a legend. All legends go over the top.

The plot's alright, with some nice little twists, although I guessed most of them. The fight scenes aren't always that gripping, although some are better than others, but it's still definitely worth going to see. The stunning visual effect is the best part of the film and would look a lot better in the cinema than waiting for the dvd release.

Hero and Crouching Tiger are much better.

The plot is a cliched mess and the ending is ludicrous. Some of the fights are good, but there are much better in the two above

a film can be 3 and a half hours, and not feel slow

Cool. Sounds like it's worth checking out, if only for the scenery.

Definitely worth seeing. I found it so much better than Crouching Tiger.

If you like visuals, YES. This is simply one of the most flat-out gorgeous movies I've ever seen. Zhang Ziyi is pretty good, her male counterparts exuding slightly less charisma, but still looking good. The scenery is amazing, like a postcard blown up to the size of a movie screen. The score isn't bad either.

If you go for plot... I can't recommend it. It's extremely melodramatic, the ending goes on way too long, and there's some incredibly cheesy dialogue (maybe it's bad translation, but either way, it sucks for the non-Chinese speakers in the audience).

For me, the good aspects were good enough that I didn't walk out of the theater totally disappointed... but it's not a movie I really respected in the cold light of day.

Crouching Tiger was far better, IMHO; the romance was a LOT more subtle and mature, and the action sequences were more realistic. If you didn't like CTHD's "flying around" stuff, you will probably really dislike House of Flying Daggers.

[slightly off topic]

If you want a REALLY KICKASS CHINESE MOVIE, get In the Line of Duty 4. No, that's not a p-orn title. It's ostensibly a police drama, but really it's just an excuse for incredibly agile actors to hand out beatdowns every three scenes. Never fails to put a smile on my face.

Is this live action or animated? I saw commercials for it animated, but from what I've read here it sounds live.
