Along the lines of games, I've considered to myself what is better (in general) - newer games, or older games? I've come to the conclusion that older games are better than new games. Why? Games seemed to be so much better back in the day (early 90s, mid 90s is what I mean). These games had so much more soul in them than later games. Games like Mortal Kombat, Sonic, and all the other games I remember playing at 8 or something years old. Since back them graphics was not such a big deal, game designers could focus more on the actual game. In shoot 'em ups there was no need to have 50 weapons, or be able to do stupid tricks. The characters kicked ***, were manly and were politically incorrect. Most of all, they were harder.

Nowadays, it seems, games have become a big competition with each other. How Grand Theft Auto San Andreas has this many more weapons....it now includes a bicycle that you can spend about 5 minutes of gameplay time on a ramp, before you get bored. Graphics seems so important to sell these days to kids, that most of their time is spent making person X have a small scar on their right cheek, or whatever. It's taken the focus off the actual game. So, what's left is a stupid role play game with 4000 cut scenes to keep your attention. I find no soul in these newer games. There are some really good new games, for example Grand Theft Auto 3, as well as the previous GTAs. Great games in my opinion, though the sequels were just ways of making more money. What's truely new about GTA Vice City or San Andreas? More missions? Different vehicles? The ability to change their clothes? So what - get outside and live your own life....it's turning into one big life simulator - whilst earlier games were a way of relaxing and trying to beat it, these newer games are becoming rediculous...

Your opinions please...:):p

Yeah i agree, Some of my fave games are the old ones.
But im not good at making up big arguements and stuff and reasons why, but the important thing is i agree :)

I like my fair share of both.

While you are right, alot of the games today can't hold a candle to Contra, Sonic, Double Dragon, Gunstar Heroes, Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, I still appreciate games today.

Don't get me wrong, I am an old school gamer, but I have alot of respect for developers of games today.

Besides, there are still tons of good games today, that are out there. You want a challenging game to suit your needs? Half life 2 or Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater. You can't go wrong with those two.

I love the games that come out today, but I think I enjoyed the older games better.

For example 007: Goldeneye and Super Mario 64.

I think your opinion is wrong.

PS Ramsey you forgot Ninja Gaiden. That is one ****ing challenging game.. I'd like to see any of you beat the second Hurricane Pack.

Just when I thought I was the ****ing master at NG.

Well, I do actually agree with most of your opinion. Like Ramsey said, a lot of the newer games are pieces of trash compared to some of the great old ones.

However, I think more of games that are coming out are better then you give them credit for. Sure, there are some developers who are just out to make the money, but some actually like playing video games and want to make games that are great. I think the competition you mentioned is a good thing as well, it will hopefully get developers to become more creative and make better games, instead of just trying to copy someones idea (like games such as True Crime: Streets of LA did. That game blew.)

I mean there are lots of new games that are really fun. Psi Ops: Mindgate Conspiracy was a great game with a new "gimmick." Along that line, Destroy All Humans should be good. Plus games like Gods of War, the new Tenchu game, the new Timesplitters, Ninja Gaiden (already out for a while, but it's such a great game it deserves mention), DMC 3 and quite a few other games I've seen previews for but I forget their names.

Sure there will always be crappy games, but I think games will only continue to get better and better.

Pfff, unless you've played the HP 2 you have no idea of Team Ninja's definition of hard.

It starts out real easy, too. Then it just comes up behind you and decapitates you.

You have a point. Nobody wants to play a "life" simulation, people play games as a form of escapism. But I think that San Andreas does offer this escapism, in that it's not actually that realistic, and it permits you to do things you couldn't do in real life... unless you have connections...
I like the free roaming element too, it stops the game from getting stale too quickly, and stops people giving up after getting stuck on one mission.

I think it's safe to say GTA: SA isn't a sim, unless you regularly drive on sidewalks and use military attack helicopters to terrorize towns in real life.

Like, Ninja Gaiden, or Otagi: Myth of the Demons, or etc, you can find some gems.

Then again, as Zakath said (aka jake aka fag LOL), some developers who just want to make great games. Those would be companies like Bungie, Konami, etc. Moneywhores like Sony and EA are the ones who are ruining the industry. Just look at EAs games. They have no soul or personality.

I've never played it, but I heard its a bargin.

Also: Stevie, if you want an old school game, that is new, then get Katamari Damacy. Its only 20$. Thats a steal. And its also won several awards for Game of The Year.

The music is awesome. There's nothing like commanding a massive army while heavy metal minus the growling is playing.

Theres death metal? Are you serious? I heard there was metal, but I didn't know it was man metal! Because alot of these developers try to connect with the kids and put crap like Godsmack or Metallica in their games, but this game actually has balls!

Is it any good bands?

It's natural progression. The thing about those older games is you can look back on most of them and the story is so simple and really uninvolving. We were just all too young to care. We couldn't expect good graphics, just had the simple playability to work with.

There are lots of pros and cons to both generations. The older games just didn't really have the technology to screw up their games too bad. The more and more advanced new games get, the more things that can potentially go wrong.

I kinda have mixed views. On one hand, old school NES games very rarely ever get boring. Ive had the same Nintendo since I was about 4, and I can still spend hours on end playing Super Mario 3, and Dr. Mario. But, the graphics are crap by todays standards (not that I really care) and the games were never very complex. Most of them you could beat in one sitting (minus Zelda, FF series, etc.).

On the other hand, todays games are unparalleled in graphics, depth, and complexity. Not many games out now only take one session to beat. There are so many different ways to play now, its almost like every game is custom to its player. (Fable, Sims, etc.). Nobody can really play the same game...if that makes any sense. But I dont find half as many games I can be hooked on anymore. I play for a couple days, and never touch it again. (Burnout, Ratchet & Clank are the exceptions).

As far as the consoles go, of course I would go with todays. Pitting Xbox and NES against each other would be like putting Dream Theater against Bowling For Soup. It just doesnt work. Of course todays consoles are better...theyre capable of so much more. But strictly for gameplay...thats a whole different question.

So I guess new and old games both have their own ups and downs. If I was forced to pick between the two, I honestly dont know what I would say. Asking me to choose between Ratchet & Clank and Super Mario 3 is like asking me to choose between my children. Its an unreasonable question to answer, so I inevitably have to choose both.

i love old games and completley agree with stevie, it's just the whole soul thing (the reason i bought a gamecube, name me one nintendo game (besides mario golf and mario tennis and those..) which dont have soul) games back then didnt have to look or sound good, that wasnt competitive becuase no one could really outdo anyone so it was all story and gameplay the two most important elements of a game.

Thank you for your replies :). As for the competition as mentioned by Zakath, I do not believe that these competitions are competing for the right things. Think about it - where games are best publicised is in magazines, and for a game to look good in a magazine they will show the great graphics (images), and have some statistics to go along with the game - be it 50 weapons or 300 cars. I feel the focus is lost here, and whilst there is so much focus on graphics and the like take up disk space, there are not many (I can't say all) games that will focus purely on gameplay, leave the graphics as a minor point and get 300 or so very addictive levels of play, and keep you occupied! These games just won't sell because they lack the good graphics to put in the magazines.

Another thing is that people will say oh you can do so much in this game.....bla bla bla. Well, with the older games I'm talking about this was not needed because the game was good enough on it's own without rediculous extras.

Another thing - Ramsey, I'm not disputing XBox's pwnage, though how the consoles are used is what I'm disputing...

You are all saying that the games of today have no soul, which I agree with a few exceptions. But it sometimes the same with old games. After Mario came out all platformers tried to be as good or better but just failed. They had no soul because they were just trying to make money out of the popular platformer genre. But I will admit that there is one exception, Sonic, that had soul.
And to whoever said that old games didnt have great stories try playing the Gold Box games from SSI.

i dont think either new games or older games are better. its all about the gameplay. some old games have amazing game play and then some new games have amazing game play. i dont really care about graphics because thats the main thing that makes the difference between the old and new games. its all down to the game play. i like lots of classic titles but i also like stuff like GTA: san adreas.

Yes, and I have probably been genrealising too much - it's like saying ALL democrats are stupid and ALL republicans are good (I am neither). It's like music really, isn't it? Games can sell out as much as musicians.
