View Full Version : What should be on the main page?
Some have suggested having the latest reviews, although these are already within each genre. What would be the most useful/helpful to have on the page?
The album charts are definitely staying, but besides that I am open to your suggestions

The latest reviews from the whole site would make sense; you can still see the latest reviews for each genre within the genre headings of course.
Also, lots and lots of pop-up ads.

my main incentive to check out the original forum was to see who wrote what lately, and so far i haven't really paid much attention to the new site at all because it has yet to feature this.

Latest reviews?
overwhelming support.
I checked what was new every day I went to the forum version, so.. some cookies that tell you which reviews are new each time you visit might be good.
also some mission statement that these reviews are written by the users of the site, not being paid for, etc..
also some mission statement that these reviews are written by the users of the site, not being paid for, etc..
That, presumably, will be in the 'About' section. I guess that's going to be a finishing touch, just before the main site goes live.

Maybe near the top reviewers list could be a link that lists the latest reviews. So it saves space on the main page, and still you can see all new reviews.
Or a small box with the reviews like it is on MXTabs.
Besides that, I'm happy with the main page as it is

I like the mission statement idea and keep top reviewers. Most recently reviewed also seems like a good idea to prevent reviews sllipping away without ever being seen..
I think, on the Latest Reviews list, we don't really need to see the number of replies and views. Having the genre in that space would be a lot better, in my opinion.
Anyone agree/disagree?

I just wanted to say that I only just saw the new CD reviews page, and it's awesome. Congrats, mx, you did an amazing job!
Latest reviews would be ideal.

Anyone else support my call for cookies that can tell you all the new reviews and reviews with new comments since your last visit?
That's definitely something that can be looked at

i think to help site viewers to discover more, you should find the best Metal reviewer, best alt/indie reviewer, best jazz reviewer, etc, have have them do a write-up of the genre, linked under each genre title, so the visitor can check out all the genres and learn a little more about them all, so they can open up more than just browsing one genre page over and over.
either that, or just cite Allmusic.com's genre descriptions, rather than having MXers do it.

I agree. Genre would be better IMO than views and replies. So it can be associated to the specific part of the page.

No, I hate how Allmusic describes music. For a death metal band, they usually put it as Rock etc..
I'm not putting down your opinion, just allmusic

A stylized silhouette of my penis entering an orifice of a n00b. That'll give them the true spirit of musicianforums.com and it's artsy!!
Seriously though, if you're going to call it sputnik how about some satellites. Maybe a neutron star or something cool and spacey.

allmusic.com's genre descriptions suck nards and you know it. We all know it. I'll write the emo/screamo one as I was doing that anyway.

if we go through with that, than ScottHerren needs to write the Indie one.

Also, mx, it'd be cool to have the search function in the corner of every page so one could jump around more quickly then returning to the homepage every time one wants to search.

That's true though. They have metal as part of the group of rock and death metal a subgenre of of rock/metal. They don't always get it right, but they aren't perfect. My only problem is the way they say "Death Metal/Black Metal" on every death or black band.
Yeah, they don't distinguish between the two.
I think allmusic's genres are very good, but that's a niggle.

Death metal IS a part of rock though.
Rock is a very general term.
If you check the site, Soul and Pop are also parts of Rock.

If we go down on every single genre a badn 'could' fit in, we'll have chaos on our hands IMO...
The site would probably get very messy if there would be sub-pages and genres for every little sub-nuance of a genre that exists. The change that has to take over is the change in peoples heads. Like Jeremy wrote in the FAQ:
"How can you sort bands into specific genres?
You can't really. But for organizations sake it has to be done"
If people stop to yell for every little sub-genre and learn to be satisfied that the band is roughly sorted into a genre, rather than sorted in in microscopic views, all should work fine.

true.
but i think that with every review, there should be a little description stating the subgenre next to the title, like it was here.
so in the Metal review list, by Metallica it could say (thrash metal) as part of the title, and by Cannibal Corpse it could say (death metal). and in alternative it could say (shoegaze/dream-pop) by Slowdive. so that way, no extra extra extra folders and pages, just little genre things written by the review like it was on mx.

Hm, but basically, that could also be implemented into the band description, I guess. Or in the Review itself.
I think, if the sub-genres would be kept in the title, it could get a bit messy and confusing for some users/new users. I'd prefer a solution that keeps the sub-genre nice and tidy in a handy description, where you have everything on one glance.
