Well I wrote in dimished,

you could add in the shape of the 2 octave scale on 4 strings

possibly, add in structure for modulations?

i am also confused on the patterns. like how you read them or use them

DomtarOpaque
04-20-2005, 08:11 PM
the X's are the notes you hit, the B's are what you add to make it a blues scale and the R's are root notes...

EDIT: lol i totally forgot the most important part of my post. you rule dude! the fiver set is SOOOOOOOOO much help!!!!

o, 1 question about it. the first space on the scales? is that 1st fret or open?

If you could make blank tabs (with a tab and notation section, hopefully) in the future, that would be fantastic. Nonetheless, loved the stuff man. Great for anyone on the go.

No, not directly. Scales are tools for bass line creation. They show a pattern to show the bassist what notes go with what other notes (means, what notes sound good together)

Every X in a scale pattern in the linked PDF shows one note that can be played with another marked by an X. The R displays the Root note that defines the Scale (for example C Major).

The patterns in the PDF show two scale possibilitys on the fret board. You could basically say, two octaves of one scale. Basically, notes from the lower scale work with the one from the upper scale, and vice versa. Good for octave work.

Hope that cleared it up a bit. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

NOTE: I based this on the 5-String version!

This is very frustrating for me, I want to advance my bass playing but I can only read tab (I dont use it much now) and all this theory is completely alien to me, I'd love to learn chords and how to read sheet music etc :upset:

I understand what your saying about the scale patterns but I dont understand the patterns that "two scale possibilitys on the fret board" I dont understand what you mean by that..

(Im using the 4 string pdf by the way ;) )

Im gonna skip the whole typical forum introduction where I aimlessly say Im new, as you can already tell by my 1 digit number of posts.

o, 1 question about it. the first space on the scales? is that 1st fret or open?

No one seems to have answered you. Those scales arent meant to be played in any particular frett or note at all. They are patterns to be used anywhere on the neck. No matter where you play them, all the notes will be in the key of the root note. Thats why its important that when you learn those patterns you MUST remember where the root note will be. That way you can use them to their full potential, and if someone tells you to play something in the key of a note, you can use those patterns to know where the right notes will be for that key.

Very nice job on the bass cheat sheet.

I must be dumb because I can't understand anything on that. :/

There are some posts in this thread that explain it a bit. Reading up the other resources explaining scales, chord progressions and the circle of fifths will make you understand this bass cheat sheet

EADGC
12-28-2007, 07:44 AM
this is a good resource but I caught one mistake

it says that the lowest C on the G string (5th fret) is Middle C, but Middle C is actually found an octave above that at the 17th fret. This is because all bass music is transposed up an octave to make it easier to read.

I think its better to learn theory from books and on manuscript then to work out how to apply it to your instrument yourself. If you just learn it on your instrument then you aren't learning about music, you're learning how to make pleasant sounds from one instrument. If you learn how music works as nothing more than the interaction of 12 different tones then all you have to do to play any instrument is learn to unify the specific technical and universal musical aspects.
