They're a great band. Ben is good, but in my opinion he is no where near as good as Dirk.
ACLOTM is different from their odler stuff and it shows a mature progression in their songwriting and them branching out in a different stye. It is possibly my fav Incubus album. They're pretty good live as well.

Ben Kenney was Incubus' ace in the hole for this album. He's great. Check out his solo album.

Icubus are one(1) of my Fav bands. But I think they are getting a bit weak. Morning View was good, but different, ok, but A Crow Left Of The Murder only had a few good songs that quickly faded into infinity. S.C.I.E.N.C.E was great and Make Yourself was Good as well. I am yet to hear the Earlier ones like Enjoy Incubus.

the first incubus cd i got was S.C.I.E.N.C.E and i liked it alot cause of the funk influence in it, (especially the bass) that was what seperated them from every other band out there, and they've been slowly loosing that funk, Morning View had a little bit, but Crow Left of the Murder has almost no funk bass in it at all, Dirk was my favorite bassist out there and now that he's gone i don't even think they deserve the name "incubus" anymore.

OK, I hate Dirk/Ben comparisons.

Both men have different styles. You'll notice that NOTHING on ACLOTM sounds like anything prior towards it. Plus, Ben Kenney could easily play circles around Dirk. We're not looking at who's funkier - it's just that Ben is an overall better musician than Dirk. If you need convincing - watch the new Alive at Red Rocks DVD.

I really like Incubus, they are right up there with Metallica on my favorite bands list. However, I just like the style of Dirk Lance better than Kenney. Of course Kenney has to be pretty good to play with them, but I just like Lance's playing better.

Incubus have a really good line up, a singer (Brandon Boyd) who can sing and also write great thought provoking lyrics, Mike Einzigner an underated guitarist whose name I can never spell, he uses effects like no other guitarist does, Ben Kennedy I'm sorry 'pwnz' Dirk, sure Dirk could slap and pop thats about it, listen to Ben's basslines on the new album, it awesome, DJ Kilmore imo not needed but i suppose he adds 'layers to the songs, and finally Joze Pasillas, awesome drummer.

Every one of their band members can play the instrument well and therefore they create excellent music, sure its probably to 'pop' for alot of the death/metal heads on this forum but in my eyes they are the best popular band around to date.

Favorite Songs:
Sick Sad Little World
Agoraphobia

Southern Girl
The Warmth
Battlestar Scralatchtica
Out From Under

Certain Shade Of Green (accoustic)

I can't stand their guitarist. Sure he's good with his feet but many of his riffs sound like hes playing random stuff, and during their jams on Alive at Red Rocks, when he's not playing random stuff he's playing simple shit like major/minor scales, triads, and octaves.

But I have to agree that his use of effects is pretty damn cool.

My favorite Incubus songs:

Drive

incubus is a pretty good band in my opinion. they have a guitarist that is better than a lot of mainstream guitarists these days, there drummer can do drum solos, and their old bassist was also capable of soloing. sadly he had to leave and was replaced by ben who doesnt have as much skill. and they have better lyrics than most mainstream bands these days.

Incubus is seriously one of the best bands around today I can go on and on about them but to keep with the rest of this thread both Dirk and Ben are amazing bass players, but each has a different style. On morning view the band took a more modern/prog rock approach that is more guitar based and Ben's style fits that a lot better than Dirks. ACLOTM is probably my 3rd fav of their albums (Morning View, Make Yourself, ACLTOM, SCIENCE, FUNGUS) though I love them all I have never heard an album I enjoy more than morning view. Heres my fave tracks

11 A.M.
Under My Umbrella
Sick Sad Little World
Agoraphobia
Here In My Room
Make Yourself
Consequence
Anti-Gravity Love Song
Take me to your leader
Sink Beneath The Line
.... just about any song, they have never made a bad one.

Yea I really liked Crow Left Of The Murder accoustic version, and I really like the videos of them producing the album when Mikey says 'I think pedals sound so much better when they are actually stacked on top of eachother'. And also that whole movie where Mikey stars and he can't get that song out of his head  his and absolute pisser I rate him :thumb:

Although I must say that Ben can sing pretty well, and he improvises a lot, which shows that heīs talented. Some people say that heīs a better guitarist than a bassist. Maybe someday Mike and Ben perform a guitar duo on stage, thatīd be amazing.

yeah and I doubt he can sing better the Brandon

I read that Incubus was a funk/metal band, similar to Faith No More. (That's why I went out and bought S.C.I.E.N.C.E to be honest, I was after funk metal!).
Now, I've never heard the later band, but I think Glass is probably the closest Incubus song to 'metal', that being said, Incubus is still a bloody awesome band.
Definately one of my favourite.

Dirk has a much better style. Plus he was the bassist when incubus was still "incubus" with there funk and cool rhymes. The new bassist [forget his name] is kinda like every other bands bassist in the fact that there is no "funk" to his basslines. I also believe Incubus has a great guitarist who is truely underated. 4th Movement [Incubus Halo Song] has some sweet riffs in it.

the new guy has some pretty sweet basslines though [ex: Sick Sad Little World, Megalomaniac] but they definately not as original as Dirks, but most of them are more difficult.

I just donīt get why people tend to bash Ben as a bassist. I mean, before Dirk left the band, his basslines were far from "funky", check out Morning View (which is a great album IMO) and youīll know what I mean. Maybe the Are You In? basslines are the closest from funk, but still, it canīt be compared to Fungus or SCIENCE. The direction that Incubus was taking with Dirk is pretty similar to the direction that theyīre taking now with Ben, although there is difference between them, of course. I love Mikeīs guitar work on ACLOTM, heīs back to soloing, so this is great. He is also writing some pretty cool riffs. Thatīs the way Incubus is, theyīre always experimenting something new, since Fungus to ACLOTM, and thatīs what makes each album refreshing.

Incubus is a very good band. If you haven't seen their live DVD at Red Rock you don't know their full skill. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. They redo certain songs and at one point the bassist, (apparently much maligned to some) switches from his bass to playing a small drum set. The new bassist is awesomely skillful and I love Incubus. The new CD is not quite as good as the previous ones IMO, but they are definitely maturing once again. Gotta love Incubus.

People who say Ben isnt anywhere as good as Dirk...
i wont say if you are wrong or not... i'll just say go buy or download Bens Solo album, then find some songs from The Division Group, then look for some songs by the roots(he played guitar). Then go back and listen to your favorite album with Dirk... then Listen to ACLOM... then decide...

Honeslty for me, i think Ben may be the best all around musician in the band... he plays everything and he plays it well... and he can sing... im not saying he is better then Mike, Jose, or Brandon at what they do... im saying he is capable of doing what they do...

what really suprised me was that Ben uses a pick, i heard it was a rubber pick(i use those when i have bad cuts on my fingers) from his tone you wo0uld never know he as a pick player.

A reason it think people like more is because he slaps... and slapping is so overrated... it does take skill, but its not the most important skill. Funk isnt defined by slapping, you dont have to slap to be funky... and saying Ben is like every other bass player out their shows how little you know about bass.

Incbus is definitely an excellent band. The most admirable aspect of their music, in my opinion, is that it is constantly changes so the material never gets dry. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is their greatest achievement to me because it is so funky and fairly heavy which better satisfies my constant craving for metal music. Morning View, again, in my opinion, is the worst of thier albums because it contains the least amount of great songs, but it is still good. Seeing as how some of my favorite bands are Metallica, Megadeth (best band of all time), and Slayer, I would probably class myself in the category of people who enjoy Incubus (no pun intended) no matter what genre is their favorite . Overall, Incubus is great and I hope to see much more of thier music in the future.

Gotta disagree with that. I still think SCIENCE is their best album, and no, I'm not one of the really old-school Incubus fans that hate their new stuff. I love ACLOTM and Make Yourself, but I think Morning View is probably their weakest overall effort.

IMO, about half the album is pretty **** good - Just a Phase, Under My Umbrella, and Aqueous Transmission are all fantastic and some of their best work. Circles, 11AM, Mexico, and Have You Ever are all solid too. But the rest of the album does nothing for me.....I think Warning is one of the worst songs they've ever done, Nice To Know You is too generic-sounding, if that makes any sense...I like the verses in Wish You Were Here, but I hate the chorus....Echo's terrible (minus the Asian-sounding solo), and Blood on the Ground is just forgettable.

Just my opinion, of course, but I just don't think it's even close to their best work.

I've got big hopes for the new album, that's for **** sure. I'm really hoping they say fvck pleasing their label and just go nuts. I want to see stuff along the lines of Sick, Sad Little World and The Odyssey....lots of jamming, excellent instrumental stuff.....I'm really interested to see what Ben does on the new album. Anyone who's seen him live knows that he was clearly holding back a bit on ACLOTM (normal for a new member). I'd love to see some dual guitar action w/him and Mike too...anyone who's heard his solo album knows why.

I think that in terms of guitar playing, Make Yourself and Morning View are not as insteresting as SCIENCE and ACLOTM. Even Mike himself said on an interview (sorry, canīt remember where I read this) that he felt bored as a guitarist, although he loved MY and MV because of the songwriting. The songwriting has improved a lot since MY. Donīt get me wrong, I love MY and MV, and so does Incubus, but I feel like not only the guitar performance has improved, but the band as a whole.

When I saw Incubus in concert in Sept., Brandon, Ben and Jose did this 3 part Drum Solo...it was really bad ***! Do they do this in every show?

I don't know...to tell you the truth, I haven't listened enough of Incubus. I really like Morning View and Make Yourself, but they are the only ones I own. I have listened to the other ones, but I really like the songs on Morning View. More poppy of their albums, but its probably my favorite so far. Incubus is a band I haven't fully dived into yet, but they are something I have been meaning to get into.

Warning is a good song off the album, but again, I dont think its their best...I really liked the harmonies on it, to me, its the strongest and best part of the song. Lyrics in the verses are cool, I love the line "We'd make millions writing books on the way it should have been"

I love Mikeys guitaring because its so different. Sure he uses effects and what not extremely well but he doesn't rely on effects to make his sound, his riffs played clean still sound awesome. Also when he does solo he doesn't just use the pentatonic scale he uses different scales and he actually has some theory background.

Some people just like to think they are 'l33t' for listening to musicians unknown stuff, in Incubus' case Fungus Amongus and to some degree S.C.I.E.N.C.E are the unknown stuff.

And then again some people just enjoy that style of music compared to the more popular outlook they have taken with their music recently, although ACLOTM sort of doesn't adhere to that statement except with the two released songs and possible Here In My Room, and Southern Girl.

IMO they haven't gotten worse they have progressed for the better. I think I read somewhere that Brandon hates the stuff from Fungus Amongus, he doesn't even know the words to Azwethinweiz anymore lol (Live Accoustic Session). Everyone seems to think that Make Yourself or Morning View are their best albums however I disagree. I think that ACLOTM is their best so far and I can't wait to hear their next album.

They are one of my favorite bands. Dirk lance is my hero as a bass player. I have listened to all their CDs and like fungus and Crow the least.

I like SCIENCE and Make Yourself best.

They have transitioned from musically focused thrash funk rock to vocally focused rock. I dont like the fact that dirk shows off less and less on each of their albums.

I think SCIENCE is their most original album

Well done, They are getting better. Ive been listening to ACLOTM constantly, And ive never thought they could write music like that. Anyone think Ben had anything to do with the new way they sound?

Definitely.

Ben would have brought new ideas along, this is probably documented more so in the Halo II tracks found earlier in this thread. Also they implemented a slight garage feel about their sound, the only song that has a similar distortion to what Mikey used in previous albums was Megalomaniac. The distortion that was opted for in ACLOTM and also Agoraphobia sounded less... 'full' I guess compared to the sound Mikey was getting in Make Yourself and SCIENCE and maybe even Morning View (Nice To Know You, Have You Ever, Under My Umbrella)

So an influence to the sound would also have been Mikeys change in instument, he went from the PRS to the Fender Jazzmaster, quite an interesting change imo, but Mikey has still managed to get some awesome sounds out of that guitar.

I believe Ben is a more accomplished bassist than Dirk, although alot of Incubus fans will not admit this, anyone who has been to a recent live show and seen him play his bass solo's would agree...

Hhahaha me and my friend argue over this all the time. My opoin is that Ben Kenney is far better than dirk lance. Dirk lances bass may sound may crazy ex:certain shade of green. But Ben K has a completly diffrent style, he came from this crazy jazzy roots band and his bass reflects that. If you have seen ben in concert he is crazy bass. He pulls little crazzy tripplets and makes awesome smooth noises. Furthermore He redid like all the songs that dirk lance did and made them better when he plays them.

On the note of Incubus is putting out worse music... thats a lie, you people obvuoiusly dont have any faith in incubus if you think that. I will admit I like make yourself better. But ACLOTM was awesome in its own right, it was what attracted many people to the band, and it has some of the best lyrics.

PS: I do not like the guitar... lol it is too hard to play for me

definatly...

in my opinion Ben completes what incubus is...if you listen to the newest cd and the new dVd you can hear how well everyone works together. noone steals the spotlight (in the album anyway) and in the dvd everyone has their lil parts...i also dont think alot of the great songs on ACLOTM wouldnt have been made with Dirk (i.e. Sick Sad Little World :thumb: , Priceless, and Pistola)...or at least i dont think he'd pull them off as nicely. Ben also adds harmonies and thats another thing Dirk wouldnt be able to do.

and dont get me wrong..Dirk is awesome as hell but i think he was a lil behind on what incubus is tryin to achieve...same thing as with Dj Lyfe..i think incubus was growing past their 'scratching' stage and sound alot better with Kilmore using his turntables as a background soundscape. Ben just fits good cause he drifts between the drums and guitar..and thats what really makes incubus different from alot of other bands and thats the Drums and Guitar..both are very unique...and Brandons vocals are a trademark as well...and i expect to see him playin more guitar in albums to come.

i'll close my rambling with this..i love incubus...they are my favorite band since Led Zep...and i belive that they are getting better with age. and hopefully soon they will get the credit they deserve. and if you havent seen the DVD "live from red rocks" you are totally missing out, my friend...totally missing out

I love Ben Kenny to death as well as Dirk Lance, they are both tremendous bassists. On my opinion i think Ben Kenny is better and I like his style a bit more. Dirk is a great bassist dont get me wrong, and I do love the funk/jazz style, hell my idol is Les Claypool. But for what Incubus is now with A Crow Left of The Murder, I think Ben Kenny fits in better than Dirk, Kenny is more of a rythmn (spell) bassist and is more on the lines of alternative music. Also, I wasnt disappointed in ACLOTM at all, I think Incubus has just a matured a little more in their music.
