I've been listening to SCIENCE as a coherent album for the first time ever. I've only ever listened to half-songs and never in their proper context.

Listening to it from start to finish, it's probably one of the best-constructed albums I've heard.

Definately agree with that.

I love S.C.I.E.N.C.E, just such an amazingly well written album, every song.

Is there any one member of Incubus who writes the music? Or does everyone get involved? Their lyrics are some of the best in my opinion....

yeah and be compared to Primus and RHCP for the rest of their career...:rolls eyes:
I've never really listenned to RHCP, but from what I've heard I never came across anything even remotely similar to S.C.I.E.N.C.E, if there is a Chilis album with similarities, please, my ears are all yours :D

/listens to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. :p

I guess the early Incubus stuff could be compared to RHCP, because it's funky, but it's heavier than the Chili's.

I believe Brandon writes the lyrics. I know they all write the music together. Like, Mike'd go, "This is the theme," and then he plays a little riff, and then Ben waxes a bassline, Jose does his thing, Chris adds random bleeps... that kinda thing.

I agree, Brandon's lyrics rock.

Mike Einziger is definitely an inspiration in my music. I think Dirk Lance might have had some more interesting technique (SCIENCE shows a lot of crazy bass) but Ben Kenney fits well into their new music, as well as covers the old stuff well (Live at Wellington, Alive at Red Rocks etc)

I can't wait for their new stuff to come out

what are you talking about technical?? every incubus show i saw with dirk playing he did nothing but play what was on the album with a little bit of improvisation...i've even seen him do scale bass solos and flick effects and of course the cover songs..but of the one time i saw with Ben Kenney he did all that and more. Dirk is a great player. i dont hate him and i think he made incubus good. but i like Ben better and he completes the band. it seems everyone on ACLOTM was on the exact same page, music wise.

But I know it's going to be a kickass album. I've been off Incubus the past time... Let's see if Light Grenades changes that.

I just mean their earlier sound was very interesting, my personal favorite is morning view anyway which you can say is the most mainstream. I just want them to explore their old funk jazz roots more, like they started to again with crow.

mutant!
09-12-2006, 08:45 AM
Ja, I hear you... But not so much straight funk as just elements of it. After all, word has it that Dirk was the funkhead in the band. And for them to do another Enjoy would be lame. So it'd be cool if they had more stuff like Priceless (ZOMFW INTERLUUUUDE) on there... But I like the straight-ahead rock styling of tunes like Megalomaniac. Meh.

Im excited for this, I love Incubus!!

Ive definitly always held a special place in my heart for incubus, although some of the choices they have made more recently as a band... i.e. line-up changes, larger concerts, corporate promoted concerts etc. etc.

they still are making music the way they want to, and it shows in their live performance and ifyou listen to their entire catalogue from early to later you definitly see the progression that they went on and how they still keep elements from when they started.

they just have that certain shade (of green).

mutant!
09-12-2006, 12:26 PM
That will always be a bullsh!t argument. You cannot deduce anything from the fact that a band's music is sponsored or not. You cannot deduce anything from how "commercial" or "underground" a band is. All that matters is whether they make good music or not.

Incubus make some good fckin' music. ;)

i expect to hear good things on this new album for 3 reasons
First and foremost..its INCUBUS!
Second. Brandon said "Mikes guitar on this album is just insane".
Third. They've had alot of time to make this album. with only having a couple weeks of downtime for recording Crow and Morning View. having a year to record this one is promising. expecially when Mike and Ben get their other styles out on their solo stuff (its great to get the "trash" out in solo projects and have the good stuff for the band albums..just look at Radiohead and RHCP)

They've been playing the Anna Molly video a fair bit here recently.

All I can say is I want the whole album.

The singer sounds at his best imo (Maybe his voice has been played with in the studio?), the guitarist as always is just ****en pro, the drummer is tight, I have no comment on the bassist, but in the video clip he's definately got a groove going on... I can't ****en wait.

Edit: At the start of the video, you see the singer's tatoo, which kinda looks like a Peacock's eye to me, but does anyone know what it really is? I really like it, although I don't think I would get one that big...

P.S. He looks ****en buff.

I want to know a bit more about the band, do they all have formal training in music, or is it just kinda natural talent? Because they write (imo), some of the best music ever, if it's just all natural talent, there's still hope for me :D

As far as I know, the guitarist is the only one with formal music training. But Ben the bassist has a lot of experience as a sort of session/stage musician, so he knows his theory n shiz. But yes, a lot of it is natural talent. There is hope for you yet. :D

I'm not really dissing them, I was only sharing my opinion...people get so offended these days. The main reason I said that was because I've got a friend who's completley obsessed with them and talks about them all the time, it gets annoying after a while.

Vincent, you are dissing the band. You are saying they are not as good as people give them credit for, which means you're saying they're bad, in a roundabout way.

And your reason is invalid. "My friend goes ooon and ooon about how good they are, and that's annoying, thus they're bad." Your logic is flawed.

How is this different from walking into a conversation and going "lol ur band sux"?

-:Vincent:-
11-06-2006, 07:20 AM
You guys take things too far, and are all too eager for an arguement. I didn't say "lol ur band sux" I don't talk like that. I said "Incubus is overrated in my opinion". I didn't mean to say (type) it in a "Incubus is overrated!", I meant "I think Incubus is overrated.." and I explained that it was a pretty pointless post and the reason I did it was because my friend has been pissing me off lately about them. I'm sorry if I offended you all so greatly, please accept my apology, or deal with it.

mutant!
11-06-2006, 07:56 AM
OK, I (for one) accept your apology.

But we are not taking things too far. We have not threatened you with spam attacks or "my one hacker friend". The fact is that for all intents and purposes you came into a conversation about a band just to say "they suck" without giving any valid reason or motivation for this.

As it stands right now, your opinion on Incubus is completely invalid as the only reason you've given for it thus far is that your friend is annoying.

All we want is for people not to head into band threads and slag said bands off without proper reason. What you did can almost be considered spam.

No hard feelings dude. I'm just trying to keep this community nice and clean, same as the rest of us. 'cept maybe Acid Bath and Aria and a few other jackas$es.

-:Vincent:-
11-06-2006, 07:59 AM
Alright, thanks. But I mentioned early that I admit it is a stupid and pointless post anyways, and provided the reason for it was because of my friend pissing me off, I was actually talking to them at the moment that I made that post, and that is probably what had driven me to doing it. Thanks though.

i know im a lil late on this...but overrated by whom?
all the magazines i have read hardly mention incubus
they hardly get cover issues anymore
their videos dont get too much play (well i dont know about that cause i dont watch MTV or anything like that)

the only people that would overrate them is their fans and thats what FANS are supposed to do.

but otherwise they arnt very overrated at all

Yes he will, and he did. Ben is now the bassist in the band that Dirk was the bassist in. Thus Ben has replaced Dirk.

Oh, wait, you mean in the emotional sense? OK, so you want Ben to play exactly the same as Dirk? That would imply Dirk wasn't one-of-a-kind.

What, you don't? You want Ben to play differently, but live up to Dirk's legacy? Well that's what he's doing.

OK, srsly, I'm loving this. Jose is beyond tight. And Mike plus Ben equals man secks in the musical, non-man secks sense. The album is also really coherent... None of this "concept album" pretentiousness or anything, but there are loads of little motifs that appear in multiple songs, and everything flows really well. The lyrics are great.

My issues with the album thus far:
1) Too much love song-ness.
2) Too little Kilmore.

Nah, my first impression is it's not very good at all. Anna Molly is one of the worst songs they've ever put out. And A Kiss to Send Us Off sounds like Make Yourself recycled and watered down.

I'm not passing judgement yet, as it sometimes takes me quite a while to get into an album, but my first impression is that Incubus is running out of ideas, particularly Brandon and Mike.

I'm once again disappointed at this album. I've tried really hard to like them ever since they took a new direction but god what a load of crap they put out. They're constantly changing their sound but not growing as musicians. Yeah their music is more technical now but they sacrifice musicality for experimentation and musicality. Now they do things for the sake of experimenting even though a certain part might not make sense in the song.

This album is far from "a load of crap" but it's not that good either. It's a very frustrating album for me, because I feel like it had the potential to be a pretty epic record, but they simply dropped the ball on the execution of a lot of parts.

My main gripes:

1) Brandon. I swear he pisses me off more and more with every album. He actually sounds absolutely fantastic on some parts of the album IMO, but these are his worst lyrics overall since the Fungus days. Quite frankly, I'm tired of hearing about his relationship/love issues. I realize that it's only natural for a singer's lyrics to reflect what's going on in his or her life, but I'm sick of it because quite frankly I think he's gone a long way in ruining some of their songs over the last few years.

I can handle a little bit, don't get me wrong; in fact, the lyrics in AKTSUO and A-M are love/relationship themed and they don't bother me at all. But he really cheeses up a lot of the album and worst of all, nearly kills an otherwise absolutely gorgeous song (as pop/mainstream as it may be) in Dig. Seems like he's been running out of things to say lately, with all the lame cliches he's throw in lately ("This wouldn't be the first time, will not be the last time"...are you f'in kidding me?).

2) The production. At first I thought it was fantastic because this album sounds 100x better on headphones and/or stoned (which eventually opened my eyes to the album not really being that great), but they need to part ways with O'brien on the next album. A lot of the mixing is just terrible and it seems to me that there's a lot of times when the L/R balancing and panning should have been done a certain way, but wasn't.

3) Suprisingly, Mike's solos. I'm not saying I want him to go back to really basic, simple solos (Drive, Echo, etc.), but IMO he's at his best when he's doing melodic stuff vs. the "let me see how many crazy sounds I can get from my pedals" and sometimes Mars Voltaish atonal style he uses on LG. I think one of the best things about ACLOTM was the balance he found in his soloing, and he strayed way too far from it on LG.

Again, this is just a very frustrating album for me because they spent so much time on it yet parts of it feel so sloppy and rushed. I do enjoy a lot of it: Quicksand, AKTSUO, Dig (musicwise), A-M, Rogues and Pendulous threads are all quality material if you ask me....but even some of those had the room to be some of their finest work to date yet came up short.

Hello. Just dropping in and giving my two cents on this album. I bought it yesterday at the music store in which I work, opened it, took it home, then realized the next day that it hasn't been released yet. So hopefully next week I'll have a job/not get sued hard. :p

Oh and keep in mind that I haven't read much of this thread. So if this has already been determined, sorry. I'd like to make a few posts elsewhere in the forums before I go off on a month of inactivity. Haha

This is probably the most disappointing album I've ever bought. Not much else to say, really. I've listened to this album seven or eight times in about 36 hours, and it's just bland. Sounds nothing like the old, creative Incubus that was one of my favorite bands. I feel like I've heard it all before, only in a much more creative way. No songs stand out, and that surprised me greatly. There are always a few songs on their CDs that are just awesome. This is like a compilation of their not-so-super songs. I'm not feeling the inspiration from them. Maybe they've grown tired of being Incubus. For me this is one of the more sad days in regards to music.

It's not bad. But that's not a compliment at all.

I'm done ranting now. Good to see you all, hopefully I'll be a regular again one of these days. Enjoy yourselves and if you find any good music let me know. :thumb:

EDIT: After reading some posts it looks like that I'm not the only one to share this view.

My opinion after a few more listens:

I don't think it's as bad as I did. Doesn't compare to their other stuff, though. Today I started to remember some good parts and recognize the songs more. Not nearly as disappointed as I was, but it's still nothing compared to their other albums.

The intro song is awesome, I will say that. Track 12 is also very good, although I can't remember the name.

It's worth buying. If you'd had asked me that on Wednesday I probably wouldn't have said that. :)

What's your favorite Incubus album, for reference? I'm a Make Yourself/Morning View kinda guy as opposed to Science/Fungus. I'm also a really big fan of A Crow Left...

I'm the same way. Make Yourself and SCIENCE were my favorites, ACLOTM after those, and Morning View. The early stuff was cool, but not my favorite stuff. I'm comparing it to the SCIENCE Incubus to present.

I'd compare it most to ACLOTM, but I there are about four songs on ACLOTM that would easily be the best song on Light Grenades.

I think I'll probably enjoy it.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I didn't like it at first. Maybe because I was expecting something spectacular?

It's enjoyable. I can't deny that. It's weird having the album already. I feel weird about it. Haha

So I just bought Light Grenades. I'm not overly impressed, on the whole. The first four tracks from Quicksand to Anna Molly are awesome, I'm talking really good. Dig in particular is a great tune, one of the best Incubus have written.

But from Love Hurts onwards, the album is just so...dull. Earth To Bella Pt. 1 isn't just dull, it's actively bad. Awful song. The only stand out tracks in the second half of the album are Diamonds and Coal and Pendulous Threads. The rest are painfully average.

The album as a whole is no where near as good as any of the other albums the band have released, but individual tracks are as good if not better than anything they've ever written.

I really do love this album.

Quicksand into A Kiss to Send Us Off is awesome, and I love Dig. Anna Molly is a great single, and I agree with what Bea said earlier about Love Hurts being the "Drive" of the album.

Light Grenades is eh, but I like both Earth to Bellas. I really like Oil and Water and Diamonds and Coal; Rogues is a pretty cool song. Paper Shoes is one of my favorites, and Pendulous Threads I like about half the song.

I really like this album, probably not as much as Make Yourself, but imo it's pretty good.

tbqh I love how divided the opinions are on this album. :)

I love the thrashness of some of the songs, like Pendulous Threads and AKTSUO.

i like the album

and i think love hurts is a really good song. but i do agree with some of the songs being weak (earth to bella), but all in all its a good album. try not to compare it to their other stuff. theyve progressed alot with their music.

i'm not the biggest fan of the first three songs, i mean, i like them, but i tend to skip them more often than not.
don't know if i have said this or not on here yet, but my top songs have to be anna molly, love hurts, diamonds and coal and paper shoes.
i have listened to this album so so many times now, it really is great. it still isn't old incubus, but that's probably never coming back :(

^mhm.

My play count for Anna Molly was 100+ and everything else was 25+ on itunes lol.

But I imported the actual CD so now they're back to zero.

but wtf:

if you buy it on itunes, you get an extra song, Anna Molly acoustic.

and then in the Japanese version, there are two extra songs.

:(

anyway, I can't wait for the concert

yeah the Japanese version songs are called "punch drunk" and "Look Alive" which are both AWESOME songs that i cant belive didnt make the American copy. anyway this is definatly an album that grows on you. it gets better everytime i listen to it..and i love when albums do that

is there anyway to change the incubus forum name to "The Pendulous Thread" that'd be hot.

i booked my tickets for april on friday, IT IS SO FAR AWAAYYY!!

they were so awful when i saw then the summer before last, but i think that was down to their sound quality because it was half way through the day at readong festival, so hopefully april will not disappoint.

Y'know, this album did what ACLOTM did. It grew on me. I loved the first 4 tracks from day one but the rest have really really grown on me. This album is up there with Make Yourself and ACLOTM. I still could have done without Paper Shoes though.

you know..after thinking about it. this album is like a mix of Morning View and ACLOTM. Here's why:

Morning View. alot of acoustic/chill/laid back songs with a few that rock
+
ACLOTM. alot of raw guitar/bens bass sound/brandons full range of voice/and well thought out guitar solos.

Agreed. Brilliant way to start an album. Really atmospheric.

I'm thinking that LG is something of a synthesis between the somewhat adventurous composition and music of SCIENCE and the much more relaxed, slicker, smoother vibe of MV.

EinzingerIsGod

None of their albums really has a specific feel to it, although each song throughout their career has fit one way or the other with the album if you know what I mean. This album feels the most disjointed out of anything they've done.

It's basically the final run through the EQ before they send it off to the presses. But it sounds like they went a bit nuts. It's a loud album and it peaks (at least my copy) much like RHCP's Califonication.

this is quite most frustrating thing i have expierienced ever. im not gonna lie. i love incubus like no other band ever. i dont even know how i heard of them but i instantly loved them. i love all their musicians, einzhiger is hands down my favorite guitarist, i love his style. im not a fan boy, i love plenty of other bands but they are my favorite. when they lost dirk i was terrified, i thought they were going to go down hill. proved wrong in ACLOTM. so ive been waiting for this album, SIX months or so for this. excited like a person whos about to get their next crack fix, just like rediculously ecstatic.

AND...now i get it and i feel horrible, not myself. but i just ask myself what happened? what happened to my favorite band ever? im not saying the new CD sucks, it might grow on me but i doubt it. ive listened to it a few times through and im just horribly frustrated because i knwo that they are sooo much better than this...i dont know how to explain it, the record just sounds so...unenthusiastic, if that makes any sense. does anyone see what i mean?

Sound Boy
11-29-2006, 11:52 PM
at first listen i was like that between the "Earth to Bella" songs. but it passed after a few listens. the songs i thought werent that great are good now. i like the whole cd. it defiantly gets better everytime i hear it.

the whole album is different cause its mostly about love. which is a topic not often touched apon in previous albums. and you cant have funky hardcore songs about love. well you can but...you know what i mean. plus they are getting older, more mature.

--about the mastering. im glad they did. incubus has a great rhythem section and i love Jose's drums in "A Kiss to Send Us Off". its not a difficult beat but its still pretty badass. maybe next album they should get god ole Rick Rubin to produce...or Scott Litt

EinzingerIsGod
11-30-2006, 10:48 AM
Yeah, as much as I like the stuff Brendan O'Brien has done with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, they do need to find a new producer I think for the next album. Maybe just let Mike do it since he's been producing between albums.

it'll grow on you, trust me...

my friend and i were talkin about this the other night...about the whole Ben Vs. Dirk thing and we came to this conclusion

Ben is better live
Dirk is better on albums

i think Ben is afraid to come up with something new other then just providing rhythem because he's stepping into a band that already has a distinct sound. he should just chill and lay down some sh!t. you can see his potential on his solo albums.

Mike Einziger is so underrated.

I totally agree with you Mr. Rhoades. Since listening to Incubus over two years ago I can say that Mikes playing has definately influenced mine. I think it's the combination of massive guitar sounds and the 5-string bass that I love.

Another unbeliever, hey? Fvck you.

:D

How many songs did Dirk actually play below the E? I can't think of anything off the top of my head... I'm just asking since I get the impression he only played a fiver for the slap advantages, not necessarily for extended range.

Sound Boy
12-01-2006, 04:32 PM
theres a couple he played below E...but its nothing you cant play with a 4 string. only parts of "new skin", "clean", and "glass" is there a part where you actually need it to sound like the song. on "glass" cause its cool to have that lil slide in there.

Well, the thing is, that'd be stupid to do in either case. IMO, one should listen to the finished product, not the individual contribution of each member, aye?

Also, today at work I took a look at the cover booklet, and I realised I would kill (or at least seriously maim) to own even one of the vintage keyboards Chris plays... Hammond B3, Rhodes, Moog Voyager, Mellotron... zomw, Rhodes.
