I like Incubus __sometimes__. They rock when you are meloncholy. I don't know about you guys, but I personally like their slow[er] songs (Drive, I Wish You Were Here, etc.) better than the "fast[er]" ones.
That's not to say that their fast songs are horrible...
Overall, I'd have to say that their OK...

you know. i just thought of it last night...the one thing i dislike about incubus is they dont have many sad songs. its good to have every now and then. i guess cause they dont have much to be sad about. and i guess they havent really caught that theme yet. beings that all thier albums have a certain theme

I think they do have sad songs but they don't express sadness in the clichèd acoustic guitar/djembe formula. They have slower songs like Monuments And Melodies, and then they have songs like, say, Smile Lines, which have quite melancholy lyrics but they don't go all Dashboard Confessional on us.
I think it's cool, though, that they're always happy or angry on stage. That makes for a good mosh pit. :thumb: I wish Brandon and Mike would go back to dreads and skate shoes though. This new surf pop image doesn't work for me. Even though I dress like that. :(

YEAH man! incubus in the .science - make yourself era. they were definetly killing it then, i mean you can tell that somethings just changed overall about their stage perforemance, not as lively, i mean dirk and mike used to god crazy sometimes on stage , now dirk is gone. kenny justy walks around. mikes mello-ed out, and brandon has too......still a good sho, but i prefer the old times.
and about the whole sad sont thing, i think warning is a sad song. not a cliche one like mentioned before the lyrics are pretty interesting, that girl walking around trying to warn people, now that her life has wasted away. not terribly sad but, a little remorsefull.

Shame on you! How about the Fungus Amongus era? Hmm? Didn't think of that, did you? You bad Incubus fan you.
I always hate people who are all "purist" about bands like Incubus and System ("Mezmerize sucks, I'm so hXc, I listened to System before they were popular..." etc etc); however, now that I own Enjoy Incubus, I can actually say their old stuff was killer. Nothing wrong with the new stuff, I just prefer their older style.

Exactly what I was thinking. And besides, Mike has never looked good with any hairstyle other than dreads.

Yeah, Warning is the kind of song I was talking about. It's sad lyrics and the music is sad too, but in a very uniquely musical way.

In our sixth form room we got a new CD player. Someone found a CD in their bag, put it in walked off. I was listening then realised this song was something by Incubus, i could easily tell Brandons vocals. I dunno what song it was, it isn't on S.C.I.E.N.C.E. or Make Yourself or Morning View, im thinking it might be on Crow Left of the Murder but i don't have that. It was a slowish song, light, think its called transactions or something, sure i heard that word being sung a lot..
Anyway, anyone have any idea what the song was?

Haha, no, I like what he's doing with his Fenders. I'll explain in the next paragraph...
ben? buy a warwick, lose the pick, bring the funk, and cutting basslines
No fcuking way. Ben's style is wayyy removed from Dirk's. His playing style and sound complement each other perfectly; and hell, his tone on Drive just pwns all. Anyway, I've recently come to the conclusion that the bass is the most important instrument in a band. Bassists should all be songwriters. The way I'm going to structure my music from now on is from the bass upwards. Because the bass is the instrument carrying the harmonies, it should follow that the bassist should write riffs for the guitarist to build on, not the other way 'round. Therefore, the guitarist should not follow the bass with power chords all the fcuking time, but instead should attempt to 'layer' with the bass, and fill out the sound, thus returning to the concept of guitar as a rhythm section instrument. It is for these reasons that I think Mike and Ben gel extremely well, and Mike's recent playing style/sound is very well fitted to this school of thought.
if these three things happened, id probably cry. i like aclotm, but man it would be the most glorious day if they took a step back, and wrote what i would like to call a mix of science/make yourself/morning view. oh yes

See? Noobs can be cool too. :thumb:
You gotta remember, Ben was a guitarist. Can't blame the man for liking his pick. I don't think Drive would be the same if he played it fingerstyle; also, the pick serves to bridge the gap between bass and guitar somewhat, bringing the band closer to that unison of the two instruments that I am such a fan of.

nah you got it right...Succubus tried to marry CHEF (tree fiddy)..haha..anyway i like how only the fans know they did Odyssey and they put part one on the cd that came with Red Rocks and if you catch it you can hear them play parts of the songs in Alive at Red Rocks at the Drum solo and Brandon adds the "everything is dead" part. i'd like to see them do all 4 live but they'd have to tour with RHCP cause Flea plays the Trumpet in that song.

Me too man, me too. I'm in a funky progressive rock band atm and I feel like covering the tune, but playing the main riffs on clean strat (bridge pup) and playing it real funky-like. Think it could work? And maybe giving the bassist a little more freedom to improvise.

nah dude. that album was recorded after Make Yourself (kilmores first album with Incubus). Hence the acoustic versions of songs that were on Make Yourself. Trust me, when it comes to Incubus...i know whats up.
as for fav incubus songs to play. "Sick Sad Little world" on guitar (minus parts of the solo cause i dont have a bunch of pedals and whatnot). "are you in" and "privilege" on bass. and "glass" on drums. and i stepped in my friends band to play "clean" on the the Djembe...its actually really easy. i have yet to find a person who can play "i miss you" on the drums though..its very difficult 3/4

1 to da 3. That's one of my favourite basslines of all time. And it exemplifies my entire philosophy of songwriting, in that the bassist should be playing the riffs and whatnot and the guitar/keys/whatever else should layer interesting stuff on top, as opposed to the guitarist thinking up his riffs and forcing the bass to stick to root notes.

yes indeed. i totally agree and its how i write all my songs. bass first
Aren't you a bassist? I play guitar and I still let my bassist come up with riffs first. In either case I've stopped trying to write songs for my band on my own. It just doesn't work. I now write lyrics, and then jam with my bassist and lead guitarist until we come up with some funky progression or groove, and then lock myself in my room with a guitar, finishing the structure and melody.
Sound Boy
02-02-2006, 04:58 PM
yeah if i dont come up with a bass riff i usually do a drum beat or have a drummer play a beat and then come in with the bass riff. cause when i play bass, 90% of the time i play to the drums. it comes from years of listening to Zeppelin and appreciating a good rhythem section. dont get me wrong, guitar is badass and means alot to the music but can mess up a musicians ego and sometimes mess up a song. and if a guitar part is written first, alot of times it limits the bass and drums
black.hole.sun
02-04-2006, 02:25 PM
Its so much better writing guitar riffs anyway when the rhythmn has been put down. Its like half the work has already been done, that is, having the time signature and rhythmn already set.
mutant!
02-05-2006, 10:35 AM
^ The same goes for chord shapes etc. Once the bass progressions and riffs are sorted out, the guitarist can choose which of 400 chord voicings to use every bar.

I actually liked that about the record... It gives them a more "jam band" kind of feel. Like what you hear on the CD was actually played on real instruments by real people. It's a whole different aspect to Incubus's organic sound.

It depends on the music, largely, but in Incubus's case it's a fresh change. It also implies that they've gotten so good that they don't really need a lot of post-production anymore.

kilmore...Einziger has alot to do already with all his pedels and stuff. Mike should switch between guitar and piano (but mostly guitar) and Kilmore should do all the effects with computers and turntables. i think it'd be pretty neat to get him more involved then just doing samples and scratches.

What, like using theremins and stuff? I know he already does, but not to a huge extent... Anyway, when I watched Red Rocks, I skeemed Kilmore has a keyboard in his rig; maybe a Moog or something. If he can play keys, he should - it'd be a cool way to keep him busy, mellow their sound out a little, and give some more solid backing for Dynamike (awesome nickname  ) to solo on.
And he should do the "Priceless" thing in every song. :thumb:

I used to not like Incubus, 'cause I only heard a couple of their songs, but a friend (who has all of their albums) turned me onto some of their other stuff and now I think they are a great band. Morning View is probably my favorite album of theirs, although Make Yourself and Fungus Amongus have some sweet tunes on there

I Think a crow left of the murder and make yourself are the best, well my favourites anyway.

Crow Left Of The Murder definently has some good songs on it... I just got that album earlier this week, actually, and I'm certainly not disapointed with it, although I still wouldnt say its as good as Morning View.

Morning View is a very good album also. I love the songs on ACLOTM though, such as megalomaniac and Talk Shows on Mute. TSOM is probably one of my favourite incubus songs and one of my favourite songs of all at the moment.

Pardon Me (acoustic version i prefer) and Drive are definitely they're best songs, without a doubt. Along with Talk Shows on Mute.

Summer Romance > Drive/Pardon me and any other Incubus song.
But oh well, it's all about a matter of opinion.

FYI, their manager said on the incubus board that it won't be a double album. Supposedly they're going back in the studio in May to finish recording like 5 or 6 more songs and go from there. Personally I'm glad it won't be a double album, because as huge an Incubus fan as I am, I don't think there's any way they could put one together that's as good as Stadium Arcadium is. I'd rather they just take the best tracks and throw it on one album.
Also, they played 2 new songs at the acoustic benefit show they just played, titled "Earth To Bella" and "Love Hurts". I wasn't blown away by either one, but it wasn't full band (only Mike, Ben, and Brandon) and it was a pretty ****ty recording, so it's too early to judge them.

well SA isnt that great of an album(s) it just sounds like the last 2 RHCP albums. it'd be cool if incubus released a double disc System of a Down style. a couple months after each other...like one in october and one right before they do the USA tour. that'd be a good marketing idea if i was a manager who only cared about money

I'm liking SA a lot too, maybe if you wanted to be picky, you could take out some tracks, but I'd rather them stay. I heard they had enough material for a triple album, but they didn't use it all.

Ah well... I'm still waiting for a joint RHCP/Incubus tour to South Africa.

dude, if that happens i'll move to S.A....they could play the Odyssey with Flea!
but incubus isnt touring here (U.S) till next year so that sucks as well.
PS i dont know if that Radiohead statement was 100% accurate but i heard it from a hardcore RH fan. either way i'll hear some of the new stuff at Bonneroo next month

Fungus Amongus and SCIENCE are sweet too, if youre an incubus fan and never heard it try it out, your'e in for a treat :). It's raw incubus; like a compeletely different genre of music... why cant they still make that :(.
And is Make a Move or the halo stuff gonna be on this cd?

05-18-2006, 04:13 PM
The Halo/Stealth stuff was written as game/movie music. Of course they're not going to include it.
And btw, my friends have me under the impression Enjoy Incubus is loads better than Fungus Amongus.

nah, Fungus is way better than Enjoy Incubus. The DJing on the 4/6 fungus tracks that are on enjoy Incubus dont sit quite right its like he is just playing over the songs so he isnt left out. the original fungus versions are way better.
