they were really cool...my friend and i snuck backstage at ozzfest once and we saw brandon, mike and Dimebag talkin...we went up and talked to them for a few minutes then security came and told us we had to leave and Mike was like "nah dude its cool they just wanted to say hello" and we chatted for like 5 more mins then we had to leave.

the second time i had backstage passes at a radio festival we have here and we got to chill with them and Jose is the funniest musician i've met and dirk was kind of reclusive and apparently he's straight edge. brandon was kinda shy but really nice. i didnt really get to talk with kilmore much but i got an autograph. all together they are awesome guys..i was glad they werent asses cause that woulda prolly ruined it for me since they're my favorite band but it was cool.

I just think Incubus went slowly downhill from science. Compare for instance, the bass part from Speak free.. or the interlude on Redefine to any of their new stuff.. they just kind of went mainstream. their new album bores me so much, i really can't stand any of the songs on it.
If i were them, id:
fire ben, bring back dirk.. then start writing and album that could possibly top science, put some slap bass in there, more guitar solos, more funk and have brandon shout more.

So....You want another SCIENCE album?

That's the good thing about Incubus, they're constantly changing. Much better to keep 'redefining' (pun intended) yourself and explore new music than put out similar albums one after another.

CiminoUM5
03-21-2005, 12:38 PM
 @ bunshal's post.

Interludes? How about the interlude/guitar solo in Sick, Sad Little World? Priceless? Pistola?

Not going to argue that SCIENCE is their best work, because it's still my favorite, but you clearly want them to just keep releasing one SCIENCE-like album after another....something I thank to god that they don't do. Dirk's slap bass was awesome in the early days, but what makes you think that if they brought him back he'd start doing that again? Aside from Are You In, his basslines on Morning View were pretty mediocre.

Brandon shouting? I wouldn't mind hearing some heavier stuff on the new album, but he's got too good a voice to waste on a CD full of mindless screaming.

Now you've done it.

All of their albums are great though Science is my favorite. The musicianship has not gotten worse, it's gotten better. Their songs on ACLOTM are much deeper and have more substance than anything they've done before. They have evolved and if you don't like that, find another band.

man thats insane...listen to sick sad little world and tell me thats not a good song...flippin great solo...and you cant tell me you cant rock hard to "priceless"...thats got their old style in it mixed with a lil bit of their new stuff...like remedy said..they are progressing as a band...if everything sounded like science a. they wouldnt be around much longer...b. theyd get compared to RHCP all the time. c. all their stuff would sound the same...like i said before losing dirk was a smart thing...in some instances i think that mike tought him alot of his parts. and pardon me (haha) for my rant but its flippin recockulous to say that they havent progressed...the parts in redefine isnt just bass too..its dirk playing with jose's toms...its not that difficult. if you listen to the stuff they have now slap bass wouldnt even fit well with it. if the new album bores you, i guess you havent heard it much.

sorry just dont **** with my band

03-21-2005, 09:13 PM
i think make yourself would have to be my favorite cover...i mean they dont have AMAZING covers haha but yeah i like the jelly fish thing

also i think Make Yourself was their turning point..where they started coming into their own sound a sound that cant be as easily compared to...kind of like how deftones had White Pony...really an album to keep them out of the Nu-Metel genre.

is there anything you dont like about incubus?
there are only two things i dont like about incubus
1. they shouldve turned up mikes guitar on the Red Rock Dvd
2. the song "just a phase"....i dont know why. but im sure i'll like it eventually...like i used to dislike "favorite things" but now i like it

2. the song "just a phase"....i dont know why. but im sure i'll like it eventually...like i used to dislike "favorite things" but now i like it

Man, just keep listening to it. Definately one of my favorites off MV......love the guitar progressions, the intro, and the scratching part after the 1st verse and prechorus when you expect it to get heavier.

Some things I don't like:

1. Some of Brandon's vocals the last two albums. I like that he's experimenting, but he's been messing w/that falsetto a little too much (the verse in Leech comes to mind). Hopefully he'll find a good balance on the next album.
2. While we're on Brandon, his lyrics have gone way downhill. Crow had the worst lyrics since Fungus IMO.
3. Setlists. They got better with mixing it up on the most recent tour, but they've got more than enough material now where they could switch it up every night. Saw them in Tampa and Orlando and I think there were only 2 or 3 different songs the 2nd night. I'm sick of hearing Warning, Wish You Were Here, Nice To Know You, and Stellar every single time I see them. Same would go for Drive too if they hadn't changed it up with the bada$$ bass/piano version.

just a phase is probably my favourite incubus song... it is absolutely incredible, i can't get enough of it! i can't believe that you dont like it. it is a really well structured song and i think it catches the band at one of their collective creative peaks... that's my opinion anyway

Dj Kilmore of Incubus is creative as far as a Dj for a rock band. I dont know if he did any Dj work on Fungus Amongus. I found his samples on Science to get old after a while. i mentioned him i think...unless that was in the A&I forum...but i like kilmore cause he provides like a background soundscape for the band...like he doesnt just scratch all the time and thats whats awesome about him...i love how he puts lil things in to make sh*t sound tight..like in Mexico..the lil ship noise and i love how its all in tune but i guess you can adjust that on the tables..im not sure i havent messed with tables (yet). and i never knew untill i saw it live that the "diggity do ga"s that brandon does at the beginning of "nice to know you" was actually just scratching.. and his solos are awesome (ie Red Rocks DVD)...

but i did like Dj lyfe cause of his speed...and i kinda dont like the "wooha" that kilmore does in "green" but i guess thats life..haha

there was no DJ on Fungus Amongus thats why the songs are different on Enjoy Incubus because that has the dj...but thats DJ Lyfe..Dj Lyfe did Enjoy Incubus and SCIENCE..but left the band cause they were getting too popular and DJlyfe wanted to stay underground (or so he claims) so in steps kilmore from Make Yourself and on...and "BattleSTar" has Dj Kilmore and the two tablists of Jurassic 5 (cut chemist and DJ numark)

well put janitor, incubus to many casual fans are very unappreciated and overlooked, the musical talent of the band cannot be judge by a few singles, but rather in their creativity and ability to stay innovative in on every album. Although people complain that A crow left of the murder isn't as good as make yourself, or morningview sucks compared to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. have to take into consideration is what makes incubus good is there ability to progess and evolve in their music. And as for the departure of dirk lance, it was time. I love dirk lance's work on the early stuff like fungus amongus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. but his funky style didn't not fit the new highly jazz infused style incubus is headed. Ben Kinney fits the mold much better, and as for people saying that Ben Kinney sucks how about looking at his work with the roots, his solo project, and his work with Time lapse Contorium (incubus side project) he is a far more versatile musician. Everyone is entilted to his or her own opinion without it being bashed, but just make sure your arguent is explained or else it will not be taking seriously and you will come off looking stupid.

two really good songs are Drive and Megalomaniac
so true. they're the first 2 i heard of them. Mostly i enjoy the fact that they think outside the box and invent songs I havent heard anything like, which there is a serious lack of in music these days on the rock scene.

Did you guys ever noticed that since the SCIENCE album, Incubus has been bringing up new instruments to their songs? On Redefine from SCIENCE thereīs a Didjeridoo (sp???), on Nowhere Fast from Make Yourself, thereīs a sitar, which sounds great by the way, on Aqueous Transmission from Morning View, you hear the fantastic sound of a Kokyu (sp?) and last but not least, on Here in My Room from A Crow Left of The Murder, thereīs a piano. Do you think that they do this consciously, or is it just when they feel like it sounds good? I hope they keep bringing up new and refreshing instruments to their songs, thatīs really challenging.

Tons of bands do that. It's just a generic way to experiment, so they don't get bored of doing the same thing over and over.

ok the bass sounds good on both of them, but we can tell that the better bass line is on glass. they both play what sounds good with the music, but dirk plays better. ( do you see what im saying) ben plays pretty much the same as the guitar, dirk is plays independant, but still sounds good.

that was the most intelligent post i have seen in a while, anyway, Dirks playing was better on the bass, but i have heard that ben kenney is a way better musician, and helps out with back up vocals and so forth, and everyone gets along with him unlike brandon and dirk not getting along. so maybe they are better off.

Crow Left... is excellent!

It takes a while but it really grows on you. In fact, I've had it on repeat for about the last six days.

In my humble opinion, it's their best album - Make Yourself, Science etc are all good but they grow tiresome fairly quickly. Not so with A Crow Left of the Murder.

Incubus have been a big inspiration to me - Before I heard "Nice to Know You" and then "New Skin" (I missed the bandwagon) I'd pretty much given up on playing, but Jose Pasillas got me right back into it. They're a very good bunch of musicians from a technical standpoint, and whilst they're far from everybodys favourite band - and Brandon's screaming girl fan club ruins their credibility a bit - they're one of the few bands whose music has actually had a significant effect on me as a person.

I've never really been captured by any Incubus I have heard.

What would be a good range of songs to try listening to for a relative newbie to Incubus?

I recommend: You will be a Hot Dancer, Hilikus, Sink Beneath The Line (Fungus Amongus). Deep Inside, Calgone, Anti-gravity Love Song (S.C.I.E.N.C.E). The Warmth, Nowhere Fast, Drive (Make Yourself). Circles, Just a Phase , Aqueous Transmission (Morning View). Sick, Sad, Little World, A Crow Left of The Murder, Talk Shows on Mute (A Crow Left of The Murder).
That should be enough for you to get to know the band. This variety of songs will show you how much Incubus changes their style through their albums. :thumb:

Make A Move sounds like Audioslave, but it's better than Audioslave's new songs are. The only part that really sounds really Incubus is the bridge, which is awesome (Ben seems to be settling in nicely). Overall it's an average song, but it's made specifically for the movie, so it'll probably sound better when seen with the specific scene it was written for.

The other songs haven't been released yet, but some people have heard them. Niether of Us Can See is a duet with Chrissie Hynde (I think that's her name) and it's good, I hear. Admiration is the other song and it's supposed to be for an emotional scene and it has an awesome chorus.

mesa boogie amp. required. but realistically ( mesas are like 2000 for a head and 1500 for a cab) have a phaser and or flanger + delay. mike rules the phase delay combo.

edit- anyone got decent tabs for take me to your leader? all the tabs ive seen sucked, and i must know how to play that song.

Incubus is playing a show at 12:30 EST that is being recorded. There is a streaming video at http://www.rockpalast.de/livestream/. It seems to be running late though. Some metal band with painted white faces came on 15 minutes behind schedule.

I think they're showing incubus again at around 4:35 EST, but that might just be a repeat of this performance.

I think i could get all bass players in this thread to agree that Incubus has been hurting with the loss of Dirk, the guy they have now is OK, but they lack Dirks meolodic riffs that was on the past material. Does anyone know exactly why he left the band? I think he was with them for like a decade or so.

Donīt know if you guys agree with this, but I think that Mike holds his skills, you know? I mean some of his solos are great (Sick Sad Little World, Hilikus, Deep Inside, Priceless, etc.) but I think he doesnīt like to "show off" too much. Some times I hate that, although I love most of his stuff. Even Mike himself said that he felt bored as a guitarist with MY and MV, although he loved the songwriting.

It's good that he doesn't show off I think. It just wouldn't fit with the rest of the band.

Brandon's straight, his girlfriend was in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition last year.

Well ACLOTM was a album that he sort of broke loose and did his own thing.

Thatīs exactly what he said on an interview. I like the direction heīs taking as a lead guitarist, doing more solos and riffs. I donīt think heīs going to do senseless shredding, because Mikeīs an intelligent guitarist, his solos and riffs fit well to the songs.

I didnīt mean shredding is senseless, I mean, look at my avatar pic, Iīm a Mars Volta fan, I love Omarīs shredding. I just think that some guitarists play fast without feeling, or without thinking about what theyīre doing at all.

Lol I think Mike looks awesome with the 'fro.

And I don't know what you guys think, but I think it's wrong to compare Dirk and Ben. They are both great musicians with their own styles. I liked Incubus from Fungus Amongus and Enjoy Incubus all the way up to Crow.

It's like comparing the albums. You really can't because each one is entirely different from the last. That's what's so great about Incubus. They keep changing things up as they grow and experience and it keeps us wondering what will be next.
