so i went to ska is dead thursday night. it was awesome. it was at the culture room whcih was the nicest venue ive ever been too. i had been sick and out of school for 3 days and thursday was my first day back so of course i had to go. the first band was the supervillans and they were better than i thought they were and so were the know how. the knowhows drummers bass drum said smoke me out on it. it was funny as hell. then came the mutha****in planet smashers! my friend joe was being a little bitch that night and didnt want to come because he wanted to watch the oc with his girlfriend. little bitch. so icalled him up and let him lsiten to a little bit of life of the party and then hung up and started skankin away. for their last song they played skate or die and the whole entire room started skankin and moshing and fighting. it was crazy. then the toasters came on. the toasters kick ***. they played dont let the bastards grind you down and then they walked off stage and everyone was of course like one more song one more song so they came back and played like 3 more. on the second last one everyone climbed up onto the mabye 6 foot high stage and there were so many kids on stage skankin it was rediculous. then for the last song. it was so awesome. all of the bands came on stage and they were playing matt davis or whatevr that song is called and there must have been like 10 guys on horns playing and kids from the crowd singing. i was on the floor and i looked to my left and i saw the tromboner guy from the toasters playing in hte middle of the pit. it was a great show!

My band played our first show last night at a high school battle of the bands. There was about 500 people there, and 6 bands. The other 5 were pop-punk, and we are a 6-piece ska band.Everyone seemed apprehensive towards us, until we started playing. Even the old people were dancing, it was amazing. We played 3 originals and covers of "On and On and On"(catch22) and "Beer (song)" (mustard plug). We never thought we'd win, but we did. And that's $200 in the bank. Goes to show, ska is cooler than everything.

ps- this thread still sucks.

I went to Ska is Dead 3, last night! It was.......amazing, to say the least. The show was at the State Theater in St.Petersburg, Florida. The venue was great. Very up close and personal.
First was The Supervillians. They were awesome! They're a great band, and put on a great show. Next were The Know How. They were good, but in my opinion, they didn't live up to The Villians. I have heard some people complaining that the whole atmosphere and skaking was lacking a little at their shows. It certainly wasn't the case here. For the entire show, there was a huge, non-stop, circle skank pit. Oh, that was fun!
I went with my friend, and we met up with some other dudes we know, and I met a kid from my guitar class there aswell.
Next, the Planet Smashers were up. The crowd loved them, and so did I. The skanking went crazy. I got up to the front of the stage, when they told us all to sit down. Then they counted to 10, and we jumped the hell up, and just went beserk. I really liked when they did "10 seconds of craziness"(something along those lines).

After that, I was exhausted. I had my newly bought Streetlight sweater on the whole time, so that wasn't helping. But, I drank about 5 bottle of water to kake up for that.
So now The Toasters were up. I went upstairs to the balcony to watch their set. Aswell as the Smashers, they ripped the place up. They also did a collaboration with the other bands. I sat down their show, because I needed to get my energy back for Streetlight Manifesto!

Then, Streetlight were finally on. They opened with a cool instrumental thing, which I have not heard before. Then they went into "A Moment of Violence". Next was "That'll be the Day", then "A Moment of Silence". During "Everyting Went Numb", everyone went crazy. This is where I kinda lost track of their setlist. They played everything off of their album, other than "The Saddest Song", if I'm right. They even did a cover of Radiohead's "Creep". They only played about half the song, but it was great!

So, to sum it all up, go to Ska is Dead 3! Or a Streetlight Manifesto show, as they were definitely the best band there that night.

Last night at the show we had a skank pit going on yonge street ( busyst street in toronto). It was insane, while cars were driveing it was like ever skanker for themselves( or the smart ones moved to the sidewalk to skank), but when it was a red light we would skank in a circler motion around the cars.

A good example of what I want to play is Streetlight Manifesto stuff. Most likely, it would be either a saxophone or trombone.

What do you all think I should do?

I played trumpet in 6th grade, for about 9 weeks. I was terrible at buzzing it good. But then again, I never practiced it.

But wouldn't trombone be harder, in the sense that you have to know exactly where each pitch is?

I'm leaning on saxophone though.

no, trombones easier...even i can play some stuff on it...*cough*less than jake*cough*...trumpets harder...i can barely get a good pitch out of it.

So right when you finish a horn riff you can lift it above the mic and push the slide bar dealy out. That looks very cool.

French Horn is pretty hard but freakin cool...but the "pretty hard" combined with "pretty expensive" has caused me to pick trumpet as my next-instrument-to-try instead of French Horn.

Tombone is by far the coolest, but trumpets get the ladies, and are also more convenient for backup singing, and plus in the video for The Set Up (You Need This), there is some badass trumpet twirling going on.

when i saw the toasters the guy had a trumpet and the front of it like was angled up. it was pretty cool. he also this teeny one. im not sure how small it was because i was far away but it was very compact. i jsut thought it was cool how he had like 3 different trumpets.

Just go with what feels right...Try for comedy, not too uptight. Funny stuff is good. Go verse by verse and see what sounds right...

Last or two Friday's ago I went to my first ska concert. It was at the Edge, and it was free... I wasn't expecting much, a few people dancing, and a poppy ska band... But man was I wrong! It was this up-and-comming band called The Johnstones, and they were really good. They played for about an hour, and I didn't really know how to skank or anything, and no one was until about midway through their set. I had an urge to just jump in and start dancing, and kind of moshing, so I did and it was bloody amazing! I had so much fun, it was one of the best times I've had at a concert, and it was free. So, I think I'll be going to as many ska shows as I can from now on.

Simple Plan has invited us to open for them on their next Canadian tour, Nov 22nd-Dec 17th. It'll be our first and probably only stadium tour - I plan to eat all of SP's catering...put on some weight to get through the winter months. We've known the guys from Simple Plan for a long time, they're great people and it's great to be touring with friends (especially on a gi-normous rock tour).

I lost so much respect for The Planet Smashers when I read this. May god help us all.

Note: My friend has a box at GM Place, the venue where they're playing. Maybe I can convince her to lend it to me. :) I'll see the Smashers then peace it once Simple Plan starts playing.

I don't see why you'd lose respect for a band just because they are opening for a band you don't like. That's not really anything to lose respect for them over.

ah, you've probably not been seeing ska bands, then. Simple Plan usually doesn't have an organ, you're right... but simple plan isn't ska, sorry.

EVERY ska band thats amazingly good in my opinion has an organ or keyboard.

God I love the specials.

I like Hepcat, a lot.

Has anyone heard the Heatskores' new cd? I picked it up at Punktoberfest 8 in Newmarket recently. Its really good, though a lot more punk than the old album.

Also, at least half of the ska ive heard has keyboards and organ in it. A lot of the newer bands who mix punk into their sound dont, but pretty much every older ska band, ever has organ or piano.

Aww man, the 26th show looks friggin amazing! I wont be able to go though, I highly doubt my parents will let me go, or drive me there...

I saw the One Night Band and General Rudie here in Aurora with the Donuts... best show I have ever been to.

If youre really nice you could get me the Donuts' cd and mail it to me :thumb: ... they hardly ever play in Aurora or Newmarket.

I'm Possibly a little late for this one, but if your after quality ska its best to dig a little deeper and go for Studio One artists such as Jackie Mittoo, Ken Boothe, The Skatalites, early Wailers, plus many more.

On the Hellcat sampler, Give Em The Boot II, there was a Slackers song, which kicked a lot of ***. So I bought one of the Slackers cd's the other day, and i really really like it. Is this 2nd wave ska? I like ska, but i don't know much about it. Also, what other bands sound similar to The Slackers?

Its 3rd wave era with a 2nd wave sound. Check out the Toasters.

The Slackers, two tone sound? They have a couple two tone songs, but the majority are trad or reggae, I'd say

Check out Hepcat

And Skandalous All-Stars, Vic sings for that band, and there are some other notable ska musicians in the band.

Slackers are 3rd wave playing trade. The best 3rd wave bands play earlier wave music. Toasters, Slackers, Hepcat, all awesome.

I like Hepcat, but I could never really get into them. I listen to them, and they have some great songs, don't get me wrong, but they seem a bit...bland. If listening to one of their albums all the way through it all starts to blend together and after a while i barely even notice it.

simple plan, honestly!

why would i be in this forum if i listened to simple plan?

i looked up operation ivy credits, and it was just bass, drums, guitar and voice that were credited.

also, in 'time bomb' by rancid (i think thats a ska song) there is just guitar X 2, bass drums and keyboard. what i wanted to know is what that sound is. is it keyboard then?

its guitar, but some use keyboard.

on guitar just practice the basic ska chords, using alot of upstrokes and palm muting

Depends if he's going for the reggae sound or the ska sound. They're very different. But yeah work on the ska upstroke and palm muting.

when i palm mute playing ska stuff, i dont actually use my palm, i just dont push down on the strings so it gives a muffed sound.

Yeah it's too hard to palm mute when you're standing up, so I just lift my finger off the strings.

talk with people at your school that play the desired instrument--before you write take into consideration the fact that most instruments are tuned differently, so if you don't understand all that it will be mighty confusing, and you'll have to transpose some stuff.

work with 3rds and 5ths and work out some harmonies--lets not have some bland ska, hmm?
