Anyone here ever listen to the Dance Hall Crashers?
Of course I have...
The Specials - No horns, except for Rico Rodriguez who only played on a couple songs
Ghost Town had a clarinet, but that's not really horns. Rico played trombone on Gangsters I think. I never really pay attention too much. I know that a lot of people deny Bob Marley could've been ska because he lacked horns.

I'm thinking of going to a local ska show, which I haven't done in so long. It'll be weird, though, because I'm not going to see any local bands I've seen before, and it's at a different place than I usually went.
I was just walking around town this morning and saw a hand-drawn flyer, and I could tell it was for ska bands. It said FREE SHOW, so I wrote down the location.

must've been a lot of low-brass then cuz I usually don't hear high pitch trumpets blasting all over....oooo I just got a Toots & the Maytals 2-disk thing...it's really cool....i think organ's were more of a staple back then. Most current ska bands lack keys, but it used to be that guitars were really rhythmic with the organ providing a lot of melody, but now the horns provide the melody and the keys are overlooked.

Well, Big D & The Kids Table's Tenor Sax player just quit.
This is a tough post for me. Chris Bush, our tenor sax player, played his last show with Big D and the Kids Table on Monday in Northampton at the Warped Tour. As far as having a last, amazing show, he got it. Bush has decided to move on in his life and moved to Denver. We’re all still best friends and wish him the very best of luck. Not only is he one of the best musicians that we’ve ever played with, he’s a great friend.
We had a really great run! Bush has been in the band since the beginning and now it’s time for him to musically focus on something else. I’m not sure if everyone knows this, but the band reads the guestbook and comments about the updates regularly. So, if you want to thank Chris Bush, or just say something nice about our friend, I’m sure he’d appreciate it!

What does Two tone mean?
educate me
I posted this a few pages back, I'll just leave out the part that got me flamed.
The name "two tone" actually relates to the unity of black and white people in the UK in the 70's and 80's (I think). As you probably know Black people were opressed and generally hated, as there were so many of them. But two tone ska promoted the unity of black and white people.
In 1979 ska enjoyed a revival of popularity. Initially the ska revival was an English phenomenon, but gradually spread to the rest of the world, including Australia. The most notable bands associated with second wave ska/two tone were The Specials, Madness, The Beat, and The Selecter. All these bands recorded their first albums for 'Two Tone Records', a label established by The Specials keyboard player Jerry Dammers. The label was named after the two tone tonic suits worn by the original ska stars of the 1960's and also reflected the multi racial membership of the bands signed to the label. The trade mark of the company was based on a negative photo of Peter Tosh from an early Wailing Wailers album cover. This 'Rude Boy' logo became known as Walt Jabsco.
The Two Tone artists relied heavily on the first wave ska stars attitudes and philosophy. The Specials took their name from the 'special' one off recordings made for the early sound system operators in Jamaica and 'Madness' are named after a Prince Buster song. The bands did not attempt to conceal their musical dependence either. They quite rightly believed that if it was a good song you might as well play it. At the time, some fans believed that the cover versions were actually originals. Listed below are some of the classic cover versions by Two Tone bands.
No the checkerboard pattern had something to do with Neville Staples as a cartoon and that was known as a Two-Tone ganster.
That's Peter Tosh as a cartoon named Walt Jabsco. The checkerboard was always on the cover too. Black and white together and in equal amounts was to symbolize racial unity and equality. Thanks to the record label's name, that checkerboard pattern got to be known as two tone.
And apparently SkaBandit was more in the mood to rant than I am.
This is from an old rant I did, though it's more on the label and symbolism:
The first record label in the UK to cater exclusively to this kind of music was started by Jerry Dammers, the keyboardist for the Specials (aka The Special AKA). Because ska was really the first (and still probably only) musical genre to equally incorporate both black and white artists, he named his label Two Tone Records. Every record released contained a drawing of a man named Walt Jabsco who dressed completely in a black and white suit with a thin black tie and porkpie hat. This drawing was based off of a picture of Peter Tosh in traditional rude boy fashion. Also on the album covers was a pattern known simply as "Two Tone." This is the signature checkerboard pattern. It represents racial unity since there are equal amounts of both black and white and they are touching, not separated. Equality and unity between black and white are both represented. It is also important to note that Walt was all black and white as well. The more well-known bands of this time are The Specials (aka The Special AKA or the Coventry Automatics), Madness, The Selector, The Beat, The Bodysnatchers, and The Swinging Cats

It's actually not a cartoon of Peter Tosh, it's the negative of a photograph of Peter Tosh, which was then made into a logo for 2Tone Records.

It's not a perfect negative, though. A negative would still have highlights and lowlights. That's in solid black and solid white. Besides that, look at the sleeve cuffs. They're perfect rectangles which a negative photo would not have. Tosh is facing on a different angle than Walt too.http://www.thespecials.com/images/photos/history/toshtowalt.jpg see? And Walt's all-around blockier shaped with the exception of his face. Also, if it was a negative, the suit would have become white. That's a cartoon.

The soundtrack for that movie is great. It also has a good message and storyline, but the music is the best part. It helped start a modern swing revival.

Plea For Peace (http://pleaforpeace.com/)
Has anyone heard about this Bicycle for peace thing?
Starting September 8th, 2005 a group of musicians/friends/strangers will trek down the west coast to raise funds for a new youth center in my hometown of San Jose, California. This year San Jose will surpass the city of Detroit as the 10th largest city in the United States, yet there are ZERO all age venues that provide a place for our youth to see or perform live music. With guitars in tow, we will perform live concerts along the way to celebrate our love of music and to work as different starts/stops on the tour for various riders.
This is an open invitation to all musicians, artists, bicycle lovers, and basically anyone who would like to participate on this journey. If you feel the desire to take part in any leg or for the entire ride, please get in touch. Also, those who would like to help with fund raising, please get in touch.
From what I understand, a bunch of musicians are biking down the west coast of the US in search of donations for a youth centre in San Hose. Sounds cool.

This reminds me that I really want to learn how to swing dance.
I always wanted to take a girl swing dancing, it'd be an awesome date
Swing dancing was a PE requirement in 7th and 8th grade for me.
We had to learn to square dance in 4th grade, it was awkward.

My friend's older brother is a huge punk fan that used to be a ska fan. He's also about 8 years older than my friend. He would always use my friend to practice swing dancing, so of course my friend was always the girl. He was trying to teach me to swing dance, but since this was 5 years ago or so, he's sort of forgotten.
Thankfully, I've never done square dancing. However, I was dacing at a folk/bluegrass festival this weekend. It was so crowded, but me and my friend's skanked, and people loved it. Good times.
And in just a few hours, I'll be skanking with the same people over at Ska is Dead.

The first time I saw skanking was probably late 7th grade. I was going to see a family friend play in a ska band for the first time. It was an outdoor show with punk and ska bands. I kept my distance from people, and just watched. I watched people skank and laughed, because it looked silly. Then I thought "wow, these are the kind of people I want to be friends with." I was so close to going up there and dancing/moshing, but being a small 7th grade girl, I decided it wasn't the best idea.
But then for a year, I followed this band. I went to almost all their shows after that, since they were often just at one place. I loved punk and ska shows, and it changed my life forever.
That band that got me into ska broke up, and they kicked out the bassist that I knew. They reformed to make the band One For The Books, who are playing at ska is dead tonight.
Skanking is awesome.

The way I see it, the third wave is predominantly bands that are pop-punk with horns. So LTJ can basically be anally categorized under both of those. Of course there are exceptions, such as the Slackers or Hepcat, who at least have some appreciation for the original movement.

The planet smashers were next, who continue to amaze me with their live performances. I jumped on stage during skate or die to sing the end with matt smasher only to be tackled by a security gaurd :(.
The toasters let me down though. It was my third time seeing them, but my first without jack ruby jr in the band (their black rapper). But they continued to rock hard with an overpowering guitar (I'm talking about the volume :-\), and by the end I had been kicked off stage a second time and threatened to be removed.
Mustard plug came on and they were ****in sweet like the rest of the bands. Their singer dove into the crowd and YOINK I snatched his backstage pass. woot so I got to go meet all the bands and I was happy.

Interesting tad of information, did you guys know that the first SID tour was organized by the same guy that got his backstage pass stolen by SynthesizedRudeBoy, Dave Kirchgessner of Mustard Plug.
Yeah, the singer from the Toasters thanked him last night for being so great and putting great ska bands on the road together. SID3 was fantastic.

Nah, it takes too long to upload on YSI.

I'll upload it later.
For videos, just upload on www.putfile.com cuz they can stream it instead of having to download it....not that you *can* download it from there...but it's a permanent link, not a one-week thing like YSI

Like all of the Ska bands I like are from the third wave. Maybe I'll listen to some of the older Ska bands from the 2nd and 1st waves.

I couldn't even tell you, I just want to give you a little shank when I watch that.
I made the vid for that how to skank thread and for a group on myspace because all these sluts keep coming in (it's called "skanks have more fun") not knowing what skanking is (they think skank=whore) so that way we could go "no, not sluts! dancing"
