The Smooths are ska/punk. They sound really similar to the RBF.
Whoops, I always thought skacore meant horn-less cuz it had the "core" of ska (the guitar and bass rhythms) without the horns.....ok cores are the center of fruit. the guitars and bass are teh middle and the horns are the eating-part.
Wait, so Tomas has his own classification of ska now? niiiice

The drummer of the band we're trying to start is probably our only good member. She's extremely good at drums, but doesn't really like playing set, because she finds it too easy. Everyone else in our band is probably mediocre, and doesn't know how to play in a group. Our band is going to suck :thumb:
The band my friend wanted to started (We were going to be called The Skazis and try to be as multiracial as possible. Irony ++) he wanted to play trumpet, which stuck me on lead guitar, which I'm not very good at, I doubt we would've sounded good. And he was just starting trumpet up again.

The Smooths? Uh... I don't think so.
I've asked this before in the YSI thread, but I didnt get any replies. Does anybody have any Assorted Jelly Beans albums they can upload on YSI or send to me on MSN or AIM besides their S/T one? If nobody has it I'll just have to buy it on InterPunk or something, cus' I can't find it at HMV or A&B Sound. Damn those corporate music stores and their mainstream...
My only goal in life is to be in a 7 piece Ska band.
My friends and I are working on 8 (maybe 9)-piece:
Contrabass clarinet/Sousaphone (1 person playing both alternatively)
Trumpet ¥
Sax ¥
Trombone * (I don't think trombone is necessary)
Keys
Bass
Guitar *
Drums *
maybe vocals if the guitarist can't do it *
* = still need someone
¥ = have someone in mind, but haven't talked yet
That means there's only 3 of us thus far.

pittsburgh, pa....the whole horn section is just a bunch of band geeks that are friends...my friend (the keyboarder) and i have tried like 3 times to make a band and every time it's drums or guitars that we lack (mainly because she plays both and agrees to do one, but we cant find anyone for the other). Horns are the easy part. It's strings and percussion that are hard around here. Half the band geeks are ska-kids.

There must be millions of guitar players.

08-05-2005, 04:29 PM
hmm. i have a 7 piece ska band.
guitar-lead/vocals
guitar-rhythm
valve trombone
trumpet
sax
drums
bass.
still looking for an organist. No luck so far.

My friend that wants to play trumpet plays tuba. I don't know if he's ever played trumpet. Who knows, maybe we'll have a tuba in our band sometimes! :p
Our guitarist doesn't like ska, our drummer finds playing a drumset boring, our trumpet plays tuba and our saxaphone plays clarinet. And I'm the bassist who doesn't know how to improvise. We're heading for disaster :thumb:
There must be millions of guitar players.
i know probably 6 guitarists in my school, only 2 of them im pretty sure arent in a band already, neither likes ska. so yes, there are guitarists, but they are taken and none of them like ska. the last ska-ish band we had (it was horn-less ska) all the members graduated 4 years ago.

Look outside your school?
i dont really know many people from the neighboring districts and the ones i DO know are into what gets called "emo" nowadays and glam and other nowhere-near-ska things
i just found out that my step-brother is moving back to pittsburgh because he was offered a job as a manager of a restaurant. he's the one that got me into ska and after that punk and he plays drums. as soon as i see him im asking him to join.

I think DK could do it quite well. Jello's voice may be a bit odd though. But music wise, Ray and Klaus could pull it off, but maybe not DH.
EDIT: They did a ska-like song. It was never released on an album. Called Dreadlocks of the Suburbs, had a reggae/ska feel to it.

Why don't you come to my room
Had enough of being ****ed by business
Ain't enough to fund my habits
Looks like alcohol so grab it
Had enough of being uncool
Loosen up like all the folks do
Like a lumberjack in my eyes
Have a bottle or two tonight
And oh, oh, be a dreadlock of the suburbs
And oh, oh, be a dreadlock of the suburbs
Some peyote and ferascas
And a new Havana philosophy
I don't know too much about him
He knows how to make it never-ending
With a stash that's supremo
He's got any colors going
I took out an ad in High Times
Got to keep up with the new world
Because oh, oh, I'm a dreadlock of the suburbs
And oh, oh, I'm a dreadlock of the suburbs
And oh, oh, I'm a dreadlock of the suburbs
Because oh, oh, I'm a Rastafarian
Forget your social status
Listen up misfit
We can be so high
Where you can't say a word
Because we're so cool, we're someone
Okay, there it is, listen up
Looking through all my pictures
Especially in the South
Got a stake in the promised land
Until my Daddy strikes the gold
And oh, oh, be a dreadlock of the suburbs
And oh, oh, be a dreadlock of the suburbs
And oh, oh, time for the dreadlocks of the suburbs
'Cause oh, oh, I want to hold you right now
The more things change, the more they stay the same

All I need now is lyrics from a Ska song, and it'll be perfect. Any suggestions? Post the lyrics please, keep in mind that they should be moderatly romantic(ish).

SKA HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION with the skapages.com crew. (and DJ skip)
Q: I've heard that ska exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: YES you heard right! Your heart is good for only so many beats, and that's it - don't waste them on just plain ol' exercise. If you must exercise, do it on the ska dancefloor! The off-beats don't count towards your TOTAL lifespan heartbeats!
____________________________________
Q: Should I cut down on ska and listen to other types of music?
A: You must understand that ska is made up of all styles of music. Ska is all you need.
____________________________________
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake at ska shows?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is
distilled wine; that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain so stay healthy and drink all you desire at ska shows!
____________________________________
Q: How can I calculate my ska intake?
A: Well, if you wake up to ska music and fall asleep to ska music you are doing just fine. Otherwise you need to listen to more ska.
____________________________________
Q: What are some of the advantages of listening to a regular ska radio program?
A: Dancing! Exercise! Happiness! JOY! BLISS!
____________________________________
Q: Isn't ska formulated?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Ska is made up of all styles of music so HOW can it be formulated?
____________________________________
Q: Is ska bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO? SKA=good times! It's the best feel-good music around! HOW could that be bad for you?
____________________________________
Q: Is ska good for your figure?
A: If ska is good for your figure, explain emo to me. Like how can that be healthy? Ska fans come in all ages, shapes and sizes so everyone can join in the fun! It doesn't matter if you are a model or not. There's just no crying in ska that is all.
I enjoyed this, but I may be the only one.

They were called the Beat orginally, and still that is their name, but when they came over here, they were known as the English Beat, because of the already existing Beat in the US. They both formed the same year according to AMG.
One of the earliest and most important ska revivalist groups, Birmingham's the Beat formed in 1978 (the band had to change their name to the English Beat in the U.S. to avoid confusion with Paul Collins' band of the same name).

I'd rather play the aquabats line.
/lazy bassist
Albert's right though, you can't just say ska bass is better than punk bass. Some ska bands have good basslines, and some punk bands have good basslines. It depends on the band, not the genre of the band.
albert_bass
08-12-2005, 01:18 PM
That's what I meant. I agree ska normally has better lines but punk is awesome for bass too if you check the right bands.
Aquabats are not always ska tho.. and really as fun as they are not the greatest musical wise.
Yeah but that song was ska and that was the point, I don't care what the aquabats are as a whole.

My experiences with skemo bands have not been fun. One played at the mustard plug show, and they brought all of their moms, who were all incredibly fat and obnoxious.
skemo band: Hey! We're rockin now! Don't be afraid to dance and get into the music guys
fat mothers: WOOOOOOO YEAAA
skemo band: Settle down now... can we get a woo from the audience?
fat mothers: WOOOOOOOO YOU GUYS ARE GREAT
It was sad. Really sad.

I mean the actual mixing of emotional hardcore with ska would be an actual odd mix and probably not go well together.

I'd say if there was going to be a fourth wave of ska, it might be headlined by Tomas and his way of songwriting and the way he does songs with SLM and early Catch, it just seems like a logical evolution.

I think to be classified as a seperate wave, it would have to be something much different, as opposed to just a different sound.
Maybe Rap/Ska or some **** could be the fourth wave.
Brain Toad

Rap/Ska also seems like an idea, because of similarities in roots. And rap could go over ska music pretty well.

I've been listening to Ska for about a year and a half, I was totally obsessed with it until around the beginning of August, at which point it started getting boring, and not as interesting as it used to be.
I think I'm getting sick of Ska.
What do you guys suggest? Should I take a break? Like, not listen to it for 2 or 3 months and see if I like it again? Or should I just start listening to a different type of music, if so, which kind?

I think that's all of them. I also play sax in a band called The Buddhas, but we haven't recorded anything yet.

Two-tone bands like the Specials took elements of punk (mainly the DIY ethic and attitudes) and incorporated it into ska but the first true ska-punk bands are generally acknowledged to be The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Operation Ivy.

Operation Ivy is the f'ucking bomb. I love them, my favorite band, and I just ordered an Operation Ivy backpatch for my DIY jacket. Its hard to believe that they spawned Rancid. Don't get me wrong, i really like rancid(minus some of the newer stuff) but they just barely compare to Op Ivy. Oh, and can someone give me the exact description of two-tone? I am pretty sure I know what it means, as I have been filled in along time ago, but I want to double-check and make sure the description was right. i know I like some two-tone, though.

The name "two tone" actually relates to the unity of black and white people in the UK in the 70's and 80's (I think). As you probably know Black people were opressed and generally hated, as there were so many of them. But two tone ska promoted the unity of black and white people.
Contrary to popular belief, most true two tone bands didn't have horns, the horns were added when ska reached North America, and when it merged with punk.
In 1979 ska enjoyed a revival of popularity. Initially the ska revival was an English phenomenon, but gradually spread to the rest of the world, including Australia. The most notable bands associated with second wave ska/two tone were The Specials, Madness, The Beat, and The Selecter. All these bands recorded their first albums for 'Two Tone Records', a label established by The Specials keyboard player Jerry Dammers. The label was named after the two tone tonic suits worn by the original ska stars of the 1960's and also reflected the multi racial membership of the bands signed to the label. The trade mark of the company was based on a negative photo of Peter Tosh from an early Wailing Wailers album cover. This 'Rude Boy' logo became known as Walt Jabsco.
The Two Tone artists relied heavily on the first wave ska stars attitudes and philosophy. The Specials took their name from the 'special' one off recordings made for the early sound system operators in Jamaica and 'Madness' are named after a Prince Buster song. The bands did not attempt to conceal their musical dependence either. They quite rightly believed that if it was a good song you might as well play it. At the time, some fans believed that the cover versions were actually originals. Listed below are some of the classic cover versions by Two Tone bands.
I have that blurb saved in a word document for whenever someone asks. :)
