ska is deeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaad in australia, we have bugger-all decent ska bands except for area-7. New zealand still love it, they got staxx of good ska bands (mainly 2-tone) and dub bands, stems from the large rasta influence on their culture during da 60's. check out "salmonella dub" (for the love of it is a good song), sorry i cant post an mp3, my computers a lesbian

So Streetlight is playing in oct. Hopefully I won't flake out and I'll go see them.

I was supposed to go see Streetlight in May at the Kathedrall in Downtown Toronto, but they were sold out.

I got this off the Streetlight website, this is about theit new record...
"hi guys, the following is very esoteric, be forewarned:
(thank you, knowles, for the vocabulary word)
the whole "2" debacle is half truth, half fiction. very few people know what actually is going down and those people, ironically, are the only ones keeping quiet. people will speculate and talk trash regardless, so be it. at the end of the day, we're simply doing something we believe in, a part of a whole that won't be entirely unveiled for quite some time. everyone sit tight, it'll all come together eventually, then you can judge.
this we can tell you:
a) there are no numbers involved. don't even ask how that happened, it's ridiculous
b) no new songs, really. but you'll be surprised, hopefully pleasantly.
c) we're doing this to prevent you from spending money unnecessarily. you'll understand that soon as well.
d) trust us. we try to do the right thing as much as possible, and our number one priority, as always, is the music.
i guess that about covers it, for now. pay attention, things will be announced when they're announced. and, as we learned over the last few days, never trust ANYONE'S news regarding sm unless you hear it here."

I posted that before, and others have posted. But some just don't get that the new SLM album will not be called Keasby Nights 2, I blame Amazon for having false advertising.

Not a problem, maybe thye more they hear it, they will finally understand it
Are they saying if they wrote new songs, they'd suck? I really can't understand this Tomas fellow.
Maybe he is saying that if they wrote new songs they would be either crap or just a songwriting style not suitable for their current fans. Like if Tomas has grown with his songwriting to a point where ska kids and punks wouldn't undersatdn or appreciate them.

"hi guys, the following is very esoteric, be forewarned:
(thank you, knowles, for the vocabulary word)
What does esoteric mean?
"I think it means sexy". "Mindless chatter"
"Fellas, fellas, fellas, esoteric means delicous".
"Tomas, streetlight is not a food"
"swing and a miss"
I read through the skachilles message board a lot. If you want to hear stuff about the album look there. But then again, they don't really know any more than we do. They just speculate more often

Wait, why would someone ask what esoteric means? Isn't that from a 9th grade vocab list? It just describes something that the average person doesn't know about or understand.
Uh, anyway....no new songs? That's pretty odd....
I just found a Japanese ska comp for $7.99 and a 20th Century Masters Best of Ska cd for $8 today. The guy at the store was just like "they listen to ska in Japan?" and then he said ska fans are pretty rare. I was like "we're in New Jersey...you guys have
Catch 22 and Streetlight and all from here" and he was like "yeah, but we dont have a ska scene. Never any new bands or anything"

I found the aquabats accidentally by downloading. My weird friend used to say the word "idiotbox" all the time, so one day my brother asked what he should search for on napster, so I said idiotbox. We found the Aquabats song. A year later my friend was telling me about them. A year after that I bought one of their CD's.

I ALWAYS say this: First and second wave ska is like reggae,but faster and usually has horns. Third wave is more punk influenced and has trumpets,but still has first and second wave beats.
I usually launch into "Well it started in Jamaica in the 50s and 60s. It's really upbeat and one year when it was too hot to dance fast it slowed down to rocksteady, then reggae came from that. Those all sound pretty similar. Then it went to England where it got faster and more rock influenced. That was called 2tone after 2tone records [this usually launches an explanation of 2tone and Walt Jabsco]. Then it got to the US for it's 3rd wave where a lot of punk mixed in there" which is interspersed with band names.

It's not like theres a definition of Ska. Oh wait, yeah there is...
ska Audio pronunciation of "Ska" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (skä)
n.
Popular music originating in Jamaica in the 1960s, having elements of rhythm and blues, jazz, and calypso and marked by a fast tempo and a strongly accented offbeat.
[From the phrase (Love) Ska(voovie), greeting used by Jamaican bassist Cluet Johnson, one of the early creators of ska,, or imitative of the sound of a guitar in tandem with a rim click on a snare drum.]

And checkerboards were very popular at my school but only a few of us actually listened to ska and knew their other meaning.

That's what I like about Ska, it's the coolest music ever, plus it's so positive. The scene is also cool, I can't think of any other type of dancing thats as fun as skanking. There's also no rules on what to wear, you can wear a suit, skate clothes, anything. Whereas if you're punk, you're not "tr00" unless you have a mohawk and leather. Ska rawks :D

I agree with SkaBandit, ska is the best music ever. Its just so much fun, in every way.
Last Sunday I saw General Rudie, The One Night Band, and a local band, The Donuts. It was in a really small place called Charlie Fitzwhiskeys, a bar/grill with a small stage. It was definately the best show I have been to, cause it was so up close to the bands. At one time Phil from General Rudie put his sax down and came down onto the floor to dance, I was right at the front and I was dancing right beside him, is was so incredibly rad.
And anyone like the Delegates? Were playing with them and the Flatliners and a bunch of local ska bands on August 28th, I cant wait.

I'm sure you all know The Aquabats, well my friend found an interesting article on them on Wikipedia, I thought it was pretty humorous, check it out.
The Aquabats have an extensive backstory concerning their origin. According to the story, the band used to live in an idyllic country known as "Aquabania." Suddenly, Aquabania was attacked by Space Monster 'M', who is a powerful villain, forcing the group to flee their home and take to the ocean in a hollowed-out log. They finally landed in California, where they were taken in by the kind Professor, who proceeded to use chemicals to give the band their powers. The band decided to use their musical powers to take over the world and defeat Space Monster 'M'. To this day, the band continues to be attacked by various villains and ne'er-do-wells, some of which are listed below:
* Powdered Milk Man
* The Sandfleas
* The Silver Skull
* The Floating Eye of Death
* Cyclopsis
* Gas Face
* Grungor
* Weedy, the Broccoli-Bee
* The Werecrip
* Kitty Litter
* Toxic Waste Man
* Russian Hackers
* Cobra Man
* Android Dolphin

1. Don't type in that colour, it hurts.
2. Dub is a genre of music where early DJs would take reggae records, and usually remove vocal tracks and remix the songs as they wanted to. The songs were usually put on the oppisite side of reggae records. It soon evolved into its own genre of music that is usually very mellow and calm. Some artists are King Tubby, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, and Jah Shaka.

Streetlight Manifesto is coming to St.Peterburg, Florida. I think its September 30th, for the Ska is Dead 3 tour. If I go, it might be my first stand-up concert(depending if I go to the Shadows Fall and In Flames show, and not counting a show where I stood up, behind everyone). If I go, what should I expect? I've never been to a ska show before, other than seeing Less Than Jake a couple times when I was younger, but I had seats(they still put on a great show though).
I'm short, about 5'2". I'm 14, but none the less, short. Should I be able to have a good time if I make way to the front of the barricade? And how are SM shows?
You won't get smashed unless you're dead center, don't worry. There'll probably be some crowd surfers. Stay to the side of the stage and you'll be fine (that's where I stand at every show I go to and I never get hurt; I'm only 2 inches taller than you). It will most likely be REALLY hot in there though. Just skank or scream along or do both or whatever you wanna do. And they are GREAT live! Everyone sings along and P/CP turns into a chorus song because the "i got a gun in my hand..." part becomes a shout-along

Streetlight Manifesto is awesome live.
Streetlight put on an amazing show. The show of theirs I saw, there was one giant pit, going all the way across the stage(50 feet or so) and like 30 feet wide. There were pits everywhere, so staying to the side wouldn't do you much, unless you stand in the back.

Why cant he go to stand up shows. Is he scared?
His parents are somewhat protective of him. Well, not that much, but his dad goes to a lot of concerts. He really dosen't like the atmosphere of those places, and thinks that we're not going to like going to a stand up.
He think's he's going to get hurt because he's so short. He's a cool guy and all, but he needs to lighten up a little bit. Hopefully he lets him go to this one, because its at a different venue, and its ska. He has a big problem with The Masquerade here(probably where all the best metal acts go) because, well he's close minded. It also dosen't help that some guy died from a stabbing at The Masquerade a few months ago.
Sidenote: A couple years ago, he invited me to this festival called the "Next Big Thing", which Florida has yearly. At the time I like LTJ and Hoobastank. So I went, and it of course it was festival crowd. We stood at the back of the crowd the whole day, for almost 10 hours. You really couldn't even see the stage. Later, we go into the audience, for Dashboard Confessional(about as gay as it gets). He gave his son a bad impression of what its like, because he didn't let us move, and we weren't allowed to make our way to the barricade. Which totally gets rid of the point of standing. God, that day was terrible.

You've got nothing to worry about, just skank like crazy. I was pretty scared when I went to my first Ska show, I'm pretty tall, like 6'1, but also pretty skinny. I thought I was gonna get squished and beat up, but it wasn't like anything I ever expected. Skank pits are really friendly, apart from the odd jackass who might run the opposite way of everyone in a circle pit. Just have fun, and don't worry about falling over, cus if you do, count on like 10 people pulling you back up. It's loads of fun :D.

the first one i went to, the floor was like 20x20 feet and the pit was about 5 feet back, the stage actually had a little bit of floor on the side of it, which is where i went while everyone else stayed in front (i was like next to the bassist). the second time, it was a much bigger floor area (like 40 across and 60 back) and the pit was at least 10 feet back from the stage. ive never been to a show where the pit was against the stage. usually they're about 10 feet back behind everyone who prefers to just stand against the stage. also, at the second (big) one, there was a skanking on the right and moshing on the left.

Only one place I've been to has a barricade. It's about 2 feet from the stage and there's a security guy standing there to catch the crowd surfers. It's not just people holding on that are in front of moshers here. Generally, the moshers stay in the back of the crowd, I guess so they don't bug everyone else.

In the past two years, the only ska band to come here (that you guys would know) is mustard plug. It's sad, ska has almost completely died in my town. There are still plenty of kids who love ska, but no one ever tours here, and we only have two ska bands left. One rarely plays because the members all have lives and other stuff to do, and the other has been practicing for a year and 3 months and still hasn't played a show, even though they're quite qood.
I really want SID4 to come here, even though I know it won't. I thought one of the purposes of the tour was to help revitalize ska scenes across the country, but they hit places like Cali and NJ every tour, and never a place like Kentucky that would really need it to help the scene around here.
I live in New Jersey, ska bands play here all the time. Mainly Streetlight/Catch 22 cause they are both out of Jersey. It's fun, but that sucks none come by you guys.

I don't know hardly anything about booking shows, and I'd have to get bands from out of town, which means that they would want more pay, and the last ska show here did't do too well as far as money goes. I don't know. I might try it eventually. Or maybe co-booking a show with someone who knows how to do everything.

If you're driven enough, the band is likely to happen. Some friends of mine are starting a possibly ska band just for the fun of it. Our possible guitarist doesn't really like ska, though.
Booking shows seems like a tough one if you don't work for any venues.

Nah, it's not that tough around here. We just migrate from venue to venue, becuase we get banned from a lot, or they start enforcing rules like "no swearing or moshing or stage diving" so no one wants to go anymore. As of right now, we have two good venues, and anyone can book shows there as long as they get the money. One of the main show-bookers here is only 17
One of my friends saw a ska band on Sunday night (his first ska show i think....i doubt he went to any before 4 months ago since that's when i got him into ska and as far as i know, there haven't been any ska shows here that he attended...i was at the others) and now he wants to start a ska band (he lives an hour away, so that wouldn't be with me). My other friends want to start a band (we always come up either a guitar or drum short) so we're thinking ska.

My friend that wants to be in a ska band with me the most is also the friend that lives the farthest away. About a 30-45 minute drive. He's gonna be part of the horn section, so we need him. Plus he's also probably the biggest fan of ska in the band.
Our band is going to end up being something very strange... not nessisarily good or listenable... but strange.

Me and my friend tried to start a ska band, but it fell on its face because we couldnt find a drummer, and then I never even met the other people he wanted in the band.
I can't start any band. My guitarist is an ******* lots of the time, and there are no drummers near me.

I'd love to be in a ska band. Problem is around here is finding people who play horns and enjoy ska.

I met this guy who lives me on the Leftover Crack forums, and we met at Warped Tour. He plays the trumpet and we were going to start a Ska band since we like all the same music, but I haven't met any of the people he wants in the band, and we haven't talked in forever so I doubt it's going to happen. If I lived near any of you guys I'd be happy to start a band.

I'm having trouble with the classification of some Ska bands. First off, are Ska/Punk, 3rd Wave Ska, and Skacore all the same thing? I can tell which bands are Ska Revival and Two Tone, but sometimes I'm just lazy so I just put "Ska" under the genre column in my iTunes. What sub-genre of Ska are the following bands?
Adequate 7
Against All Authority
Antimaniax
Assorted Jelly Beans
BOTAR
Big D & The Kids Table
Blue Meanies
Capdown
Catch 22
Chickenpox
The Chinkees
Choking Victim
Common Rider
Cousin Oliver
Dance Hall Crashers
F-Minus
The Filaments
The Flatliners
The Heatskores
The Hippos
InDk
Knowledge
Mu330
No Ca$h
Operation Ivy
Potshot
Skankin' Pickle
Suicide Machines
The Usuals
Mustard Plug
Reel Big Fish
The Smooths
Spitvalves
I'm really confused, if you could just put in a genre beside a few of the bands it would help alot. Thanks.

So there's no difference between Ska/Punk and Skacore?
Brain Toad

Skacore is such a tiny genre of difference, there is few bands. Kithkin knows more about the differences. But skacore is ska with breakdowns, like hardcore.

So would it be wrong if I labeled all the bands I listed as Ska/Punk?

Skacore is practically ska/punk except it's leaning more towards punk and hardcore influences. Like in AAA you can tell they are faster and more aggresive than a band like Operation Ivy. Now you may think, "well Choking Victim is pretty punk but they still got those ska chords going on" but they don't have the hardcore influence. What seperates them from bands like AAA or Capdown is that there aren't any hardcore-type breakdowns

It's all up to you. I label most of my 3rd wave as 3rd wave/Ska Revival on MediaMonkey to just make it easier on me.

Allright thanks guys, I'm gonna get to work on re-classifying my Ska bands :thumb:
Me and my friend tried to start a ska band, but it fell on its face because we couldnt find a drummer, and then I never even met the other people he wanted in the band.
The drummer of the band we're trying to start is probably our only good member. She's extremely good at drums, but doesn't really like playing set, because she finds it too easy. Everyone else in our band is probably mediocre, and doesn't know how to play in a group. Our band is going to suck :thumb:

go to marching band practice. i met a girl there that my friends and i are gonna try to talk into playing sax for a band
