last night, Ska Is Dead was crazy!
Streetlight played Keasbey Nights and Dear Sergio
but MU330 played all of their bad songs. It was so weird.
and guess what!
The Superspecs are now back on my "a,sshole list"
they played pretty much all new songs except "Listen Up" and "Dr. Evil Ska"
Then they closed with "Animosity" ir whatever it's called. Before they played it, he said "This one is for all the kids on the forums who hate us 'cuz we love you"
I wanted to run on stage and break his f'uckin neck

It was so sick yesterday. The pit during Voodoo Glow Skulls was insane. Then in Streetlights First 2 songs there were like 10 different pits and the whole crowd was moving.

I've really been getting into Crack Rock Steady bands (LoC, CV, INDK etc.) can anybody explain to me whats going with those bands. Im pretty confused cus LoC broke up and then they formed like 20 other bands, Morning Glory, the Crack Rock Steady Seven, and others, then released a whole bunch of split albums, which got me even more confused. Could anybody who knows the history of Loc and CV explain it to me? And also reccomend me some more bands that sound like Loc and CV

I took a history of music course in university. When they covered ska they like you said it began with mento being mixed with r n b. They also said bass didnt have a large or even important role. Mainly used guitar doing upstrokes.
However, today it seems bass one of the most important elements in a ska band. So i think they major difference between ska of old and ska of today. Most bands u see have crazy bass lines or at least use walking bass lines a lot. Thoughts?

Even though the bass in trad ska isn't a big part its very distinctive. Later bands have picked up on this and made it more prominent.
Some first wave ska has quite prominent bass lines though.
eg The Valentines - Blam Blam Fever

I did a profile on LoC, it explains most there, check the links in the rules thread. But for a general run down.
Choking Victim was formed in the 80s, and recorded Squatta's Paradise and No Gods/No Managers, plus some seperate songs etc. They broke up. After awhile some of the members got back together, and Leftover Crack was formed. They recorded and released Mediocre Generica as you know. As the band went along, many members went off for side projects as bands do. Ezra formed INDK, which broke up, and then formed Morning Glory. The CRS7 bands have only done one split, which was the split with F-Minus, and that was as the CRS7 which was Leftover Crack plus 3 members. F-Minus also shares a drummer I believe with some of the bands, hence making them part of them as well. The 7 refers to the 7 general members shared by all the bands.
For bands that sound similar:
No-Ca$h - Almost a rip off of LoC
No Commercial Value - Pre-CV stuff from the band, with a female vocalist in some parts.
Antimaniax - A pretty good band, they have a similar skacore sound as LoC, but not as copying as NC
My Own Religion - Also really good.
There is also a tribute album called Songs in the Key of Lice out there, but its difficult to find, I have it on SLSK but I can't find the actual tracklist for it anywhere.

Ska Education and Discussion
I decided to do this after I tired of all the ska threads we get. Face it, ska is a big genre, second or third most discussed genre here in punk, so why not have a discussion thread just for it. Also why not learn, learning is fun!
First and foremost, check out Kithkin's two threads on Ska. The first offers explnations of waves, the second offers a very good list of bands.
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71269
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=185472
Ska is a form of Jamician music that formed in the early 1950s, it led to creation of rocksteady the one of Jamica's most famous imports, reggae. In basic ska is a blend of American R&B and traditional Jamican music such as mento and calypso. Ska is the permier genre listened to rude boys and girls, as well as the first wave of skinheads.
After World War II Jamicans began purchasing radios in large numbers and could pick up signals from the southern United States, most notably, New Oreleans. With these American airwaves came the sounds of New Orleans R&B. The Jamicans loved it. To meet the demand for this type of music, entrpenurs such as Prince Buster, Clement Dodd, and Duke Reed set up sound systems, which were portable discotheques that appeared at dances and gatherings.
When R&B fell out of favor in New Orleads in 1960, the Jamicans began recording their own interpretation of the music. Ska is known for is accented upbeats on guitar and piano. The orgin of the name is disputed between the traditional Jamican greeting "Love Skavoovie", or the sounds the music made, described by guitarist Ernest Ranglin as "skat! skat! skat!". The use of these upbeats may of come from minsinterpretations of early jazz and rock and roll broadcasts, which would sound like the off beat sounds we hear in ska because of the break up in weak radio signals. Others disagree with this and say that it is not a misinterpretation, but Jamica's response to America's music.
As American music changed, so did the influence on Ska. As jazz and rock and roll became more popular in the States, Ska bands started doing insturmental covers of popular American and British songs. And in 1966-67, when soul came into place, Ska made its transion into rocksteady, which lasted as the predominant genre until reggae in the late 60s.
In the early 60s, ska was brought to the UK by Prince Buster and U-Roy. This music had a big impact on the UK folk, and they began their own versions of ska, marking the birth of the 2nd wave. The 2nd wave was pioneered by the record label Two-Tone. Two-Tone saw the first influences of punk on the genre along with British rock and pop. The music was sped up and given a British accent.
The third wave was when Ska hit America. American punk had a big influence on this wave of ska, along with hardcore and other predominat American punk sub-genres. A lot bands from the third wave didn't always follow the same sound however. Some went so far as being just punk with a bit of ska, while some went the oppsite direction and started making first and second wave type ska.
Rocksteady:
Rocksteady came about around 1966 due to an unusually hot summer (which meant that people couldn't dance as fast) as well as a genrally desire for change. Bass lines became more intricate, horns were increasingly deemed irrevelant and keyboards or extra rhythm guitars filled the space. many ska bands such as Desmond Dekker & The Aces, The Paragons (who did the original Tide Is High which was later slaughtered by Blondie and Atomic Kitten), The Gaylads and The Maytals adopted the genre (which took it's name from an Anton Ellis track) popularising it. After a few years Rocksteady transmuted into Reggae with tracks such as Toots & The Maytals "Do The Reggay."
Dances:
For a skanking tutorial, see the first link above to Kithkin's post.
Moonstomping is another ska/reggae dance move, which consists of lifiting your knees high and stomping them to the beta of the music. This move is often associated with the skinheads in ska

I had never seen the Slackers before, or even in a picture, so I was talking to them when I was gonna buy a shirt, and said, "Hey... you guys are pretty cool lookin' roadies." and their like, "We are the Slackers." I had no answer to that, completely felt like a dumbass.

they better play some when i go and see them.
Streetlight just put on the ****ing sickest show. They played most of Everything Goes Numb, some Keasbey Nights. It was the first show I've been to in a while and it was very good. Whole Wheat Bread, Gym Class Heroes, and a bunch of local bands played.
Streetlight won't be going on tour for a while due to recording. Or so they said.
When they played the Catch 22 stuff, they just threw it in the middle of like A Moment of Silence, they just kinda played Keasbey Nights, then went back to it. It was one of the best shows I've been to.

You would get your worthless point across much better if you actually used correct english.
I got confused reading that list cuz I saw Desmond Dekker with no "and the Aces" at the end and then I was like "Hey! They didn't list Peter Tosh and the Skatellites....oh wait....they just put the Skatellites...." since (I think) they're usually written out....
PS. It's "skavoovee" not "skavoovie"
Did you know that tere is only onw ska dance?
What? But there's the ska, the moonstomp, and skanking....was the ska covered in the opening post? I didn't read it all....it's like the twist
EDIT: k, no, the ska wasn't covered in the first post...its the one that you always see that animation of Walt Jabsco doing.
Philadelphia, 30 minutes from.
You're close enough to Jersey to get in on their scene. There's a good ska scene in Jersey. Or you could high-tail your way to Pittsburgh. We've got some good ska bands around here. We've also got the skank-with-random-people thing.

Yeah, it's worthless because he can't type. Jackas's.
on topic- Does anybody know if Buck-o-nine are going to be recording or touring anytime soon? Last time i checked I heard they got their equipment stolen and are going on a hiatus or something. That was a while ago, though.

The one song I played on the radio definitely had more ska in it than anything on Insanity Later, and was good
