AGT is legit,
and i have a way of sweet talking promoters, because EVERY promoter knows what it feels like to need help from a fellow promoter.
when i know who the guest are, if they're local there's always a possiblity of being on the guest list.. ? Muhahahah, but i doubt it.
Id pay out good money to see SLM again.

I hate how ska is put in with punk, it's totally different, Ska sucks and only SHARPs, Poseurs, & bombaclot jamaicans like it.

Anyone ever watched Reel Big Fish live?
Yes. They're fun and all, but they always play for a really long time. Which, depending on how much of a fan of them you are, is either a good thing or a not so good thing.

Ya, I find the entire band hilarious, I watched a live DVD of them, pretty impressed. None of them really care and aren't shy to do anything...except for Matt.
Matt... That reminds me. Last time Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto came into town my friend Matt broke his leg during Whole Wheat Bread, so he missed streetlight and RBF, his two favorite bands. It was lame as hell.
I really enjoyed the song SR when I saw RBF, but they're not really a band I actively listen to.

Yeah... the first time you see RBF play live, it's great that they're playing forever.

Big D isn't playing the day that I [might be] going. In fact, no good bands are.
But yeah, I'm taking a risk here and planning to buy tickets to the less than jake show at the door. I was at the place last night to see some local ska bands, but I didn't have the money to front for the tickets, so I didn't buy them.

One of those electric, industrial cheese graters in pizza places. By some stunning ray of stupidity, my hand found it's way into one.
An hour of surgery, two pins, 23 stitches, and they're still crooked and don't work right.
About a week after I did it, it looked something like this:

Streetlight were really good the other night. They played so short of a set compared to Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. We got there at about 8:10 with the ticket saying it started at 8:00. When we got in, AAA was already off the stage. Streetlight played for probably a half hour, at least one new song. It was good. Then Less Than Jake set up this giant, elaborate Price is Right ****. I went to the back and they played for more than an hour. Then Reel Big Fish came on, who I like at least a little bit. They also played for more than an hour, and started to come out for an encore, but we left. They played the same song 10 different ways. After Streetlight played, I kind of wanted to kill myself the rest of the time.

I enjoy the RBF's smörgåsbord of musical styles...very entertaining. Less Than Jake did a really good job I thought. They impressed me the most actually, just because I already had high expectations for Streetlight Manifesto and they didnt go beyond the expectations. Streetlight played a 40 minute set for us and played 2 new songs. And yeah i missed AAA too but i didnt care; I actually just thought that they didnt play at all.

I ended up coming up with a way to get off of work in time to see streetlight, but they went on fourty minutes earlier than they were scheduled to, so ended up paying fifteen bucks to see Moment of Violence and a New song I've never heard before.
The new song was good, but I honestly can't remember anything about it other than some of the lyrics were about a guy named Ricky.

My favorite is probably "I Said", it reminds me a bit of a BMTI song, can't remember which one.
Generally I'd say your stuff definitely has got potential, but the recording quality kind of sucks. Especially the horns in "I said" don’t sound too good.
Keep up the good work. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit!
EDIT: Have you considered making at least some parts of the guitar electric?

this is all done in my basement with a 15 dollar computer mic and a synth keyboard. it's just to get my ideas down. my main band was (we broke up) http://www.myspace.com/sunnyavenue
im assuming that by "I said" reminding you of a BTMI song you meant Boredumb, seeing as boredumb is incredibly similar to Syke! Life is awesome! in the strumming pattern.
but yeah, this is all just rough work. when it comes time to record, i'll have a full band and go into a studio.

This was a pretty terrible year for ska. Besides Keep it Going, Get Warmer and SitB, I can't think of another album that would make my top 10. Maybe Jaya the Cat's More Late Night Transmissions.

these are the only ska-ish albums i got that were released in 07:
dan potthast - sweets meats and eyeballs
tim armstrong - a poet's life (that might have been 06...)
claypigeon - ep
king blues - taking over ep
big d/brain failure - beijing to boston
big d - strictly rude
rebelation - state of the union
jb conspiracy - this machine
random hand - change of plan
apb - demo/ep
babar luck - world citizen frankenstanee
pama international - love filled dub band (actually i think thats 08)
most of them were pretty awesome, there were a couple of disappointments i guess.
i got given the new mustard plug to review but i have ****ing lost it, along with all the other cds i got given with it....crap. still haven't got the new slackers to review through the post, and waiting on sonic boom six and streetlight manifesto to come in for review as well. god people suck at sending me stuff.
this year, i am looking forward to the new inner terrestrials album, and am interested to hear the king blues re-release. brap.
ok this post just spurred me on to thoroughly search my room and i found the cds i lost! as well as left alone - dead american radio which isn't new (2006) but is new to me. awesome.
i also found:
mustard plug - in black and white
the menzingers - a lesson in the abuse of information technology
squid 58 - dismantled
anyway i shall give them a bit of a listen

Hey Kithkin.
I'm working on a audio documentary of Ska music for my Senior year capstone project at school. I'm trying to get hold of some Boston, NYC area Ska bands to do interviews with. Any ideas? I've already tried contacting members from these bands recently but haven't heard back yet:
The Allstonians
Tip The Van (CT band)
Coolie Ranx (from the Pilfers)
Westbound Train
Cenzo
Pietasters
Catch 22
Streetlight
The Toasters
The Slackers
I've also gotten an interview with Vinnie from Less Than Jake and Ken Stewart the keyboardist/Manager of the Skatalites. I'm trying to do these in person because Vinnie's interview was done over the phone and the sound quality isn't ideal which is why I'm looking for bands around CT where I go to school so I can just drive out and talk to them with my recorder. Any bands you know I might try contacting to talk with would be useful man.
Kithkin
01-08-2008, 01:19 PM
Bosstones, Big D, Kicked in the Head, Stray Bullets, Have Nots and Jaya the Cat are all from the Boston area. Infamous Jake and The Pinstripe Mafia were from somewhere else in Mass.
Bomb the Music Industry, High School Football Heroes, Jay Tea, the Fad, Daly's Gone Wrong, David Hillyard and the Rocksteady 7 (slackers side project), Patent Pending and Tri-State Conspiracy are/were from New York.
Hub City Stompers, Whiskey Flask Revenge! and Too Short Notice are/were from New Jersey.
Dan Potthast, Jeff Rosenstock, Aaron Barrett, Scott Klopfenstein and Rick Johnson (Mustard Plug bassist) are good people to talk to because of the breadth of bands they've toured with (and Jeff because he's insane) and because they tour all the time, so if BTMI, The Stitch Up, Mustard Plug or RBF come near you, talk to them.
Also, I imagine anyone from the Toasters or Firshbone would give you great material.

I saw one of their headlining shows in Baltimore with some local band. It was weird, they played a pool hall on a Wednesday with maybe 20 people there, mostly the regular crowd. But there were a few people there who had been following them around for the week previous. But the band was on the ball. They got the tiny crowd moving and talking.

but it's not out in the uk til friggin JULY. i am not happy. i am probably going to order from the mainland label, but i'm going to have to get some cash together and sort out the whole international money order type thing
i went to see state radio (http://www.myspace.com/stateradio) on tuesday at my friend's uni, i thought they were really sweet! as with all those rx bandits/howards alias type bands though, i really preferred their ska stuff to their rock stuff. but there was plenty of it to keep me happy. 'fall of the american empire' is such an amazing song. the venue was really weird, though...it was on the 4th floor of the su, and it had windows and it was still light outside til like 10pm
also last week i went to see flatliners. i drank a lot of super strength cider, but from what i remember they were pretty good. i was hoping they played more reggae-influenced stuff, though, but from their set last week it was mostly punk stuff which was a shame
anyway i have an exam tomorrow morning....adios

I knew I liked the Whackers, but State Radio is a wonderful surprise.
I actually like RX Bandit's rock stuff better than the reggae parts.
The Flatliners newest album is pretty much all punk. Even when I saw them before it came out, the only part that was discernibly reggae influenced was an interlude between the singer (on guitar) and the drummer when somebody's instrument went haywire.

So I really went off Less Than Jake after Anthem. I don't think I've even properly listened to In with the Out Crowd, but I just heard their new song off
http://www.lessthanjake.com/home
and I may well be buying this album now- since it's meant to be a return to their ska roots.
Edit: ****ing love the horn line!

The Flatliners newest album is pretty much all punk. Even when I saw them before it came out, the only part that was discernibly reggae influenced was an interlude between the singer (on guitar) and the drummer when somebody's instrument went haywire.
yeah it's a total shame :upset: i still haven't heard the new album. i had to pay £9 on the door to get into the show, though, which totally sucks. i guess it was fair because rentokill were playing too, so it was two bands on tour, but seriously £9 is a rip off. the reason i drank the cider was to take the edge off the price, haha.

i am interviewing less than jake tomorrow, and was wondering if anyone had any good questions?
someone interviewed them for the same magazine last month and asked a lot of questions about their music and new album in general, so i am i am going to ask them mostly questions about gainesville, as that's the theme of the new cd.
i'm gonna ask a few about them making the new label and stuff as well though.
oh anyone heard their new album? it's kind of a return to ska but i'm not overly bothered about it. at least on anthem they had 'the science of selling yourself short', from the amount of listening i have given the new one i don't think it has anything as good as that.

Ask them if they actually think it's cool when they use that gigantic retarded Price of Right setup when they play shows.

Yes
Ask them how it feels to be the Taking Back Sunday of ska. I swear to God I remember these people looking exactly like Taking Back Sunday

Also ask them why they are so much less talented than the bands that open for them and play a set one third the length of theirs (aka Streetlight).
Kithkin
06-13-2008, 10:41 AM
That's an easy one. They're far more popular than Streetlight. Talent has nothing to do with it. At least they're touring with talented bands.
As for questions about Gainesville.
Gainesville was ranked as the #1 place to live in the 2007 edition of Cities Ranked and Rated and one of the "best places to live and play" in 2007 by National Geographic Adventure. How has it changed since you got started there? Do you think it deserves those ranking, or do you think they missed some of the Gainesville experience?
How was/is the local scene affected by the University of Florida and its transient student population.

thanks for some serious questions kith, i'm afraid i didn't see them before i went but...
do you know i had that first question down but i didn't actually ask it in the end!
and they brought up the whole student/transient population (in those exact words) all by themselves :)
they were ok dudes, vinnie and roger were kinda grumpy and roger was kind of sleep deprived too, and chris just kept trying to make me blush, but buddy and jr are such nice dudes! lots of good stories and funny stuff
i'm just having some beers now and looking forward to later, they're playing this tiny 200-capacity venue in camden tonight with this band i know who won a competition to support....and i managed to get on the list + 1 which is the hottest ticket in town, i'm so stoked :D

I really badly wanted to go to that gig but it sold out real early. I also knew someone in a band who was going to enter that competition... but their drummer didn't get the paperwork or something.
Drummers, eh?

I just got the LTJ album in the mail and I've listened through most of it. I also heard it played in its entirety on U of F's college radio station. I actually really like it. It's definitely a few steps better than In With the Out Crowd.

The beginning and the end aren't perfect, but the middle is great.
Anything is better than In with the Out Crowd, but I'd say the new one is pretty close to Anthem.

I really like the first track. The last three tracks leave something to be desired but overall its all very catchy. Only other complaint would be its really short. Not even 35 minutes.

when i saw them they opened with 'does the lion city still roar?' and i thought it was pretty rockinnnnn. despite having had the album for a while i haven't listened to it too much yet. they probably played a few more tracks but off the top of my head i don't know. they were rad, though. tons of old stuff. lots of dancing. a couple of fights. a bit of schmoozing.

I can't help that I <3 Simon Amstell and he wrote an episode.
I just listened again and it's not actually Big D. At about 38 minutes, 20 seconds in a song comes on that sounds exactly like Strictly Rude, but the song is from 1978 and it's called "Uptown Top Ranking" by Althea and Donna.
Compare:
Big D:

read the last page of the strictly rude insert, the song is based on and inspired by the older version. i havent heard the 'original' but i dont think it was intended to be a cover.
I just went to a ska show for the first time in a long time. It was quite fun.
Also streetlight is coming to my town in october, and I'm pretty excited about it.

who was playing the show?
i haven't been to too many ska shows lately...but here's a lowdown of the ones i have been to:
a couple of weekends ago jimmy cliff played this free festival in a park down the road from my house. he was awesome, i was really hungover but loved it loads. because he came on late they cut off his sound before he'd played some rad songs, but it was still good. he played 'many rivers to cross', 'wild world', 'you can get it if you really want' and 'vietnam' among others. i woulda been dead happy if he had played 'harder they come', but considering it's usually £20 at the jazz cafe whenever he plays round here, i was happy with that as a free show
i went to see slackers/pama international/pietasters. that was rad. i also saw dave and vic from slackers play an instore in this tiny record shop in camden, that was amazing. they played all sorts of **** they don't usually play, including 'mommy'. vic was pretty much improvising how to play them solo on the guitar as he played them, and dave had to improvise a few he had forgotten. that was ace.
this band called squab came and played a party at my house a few weeks ago - http://www.myspace.com/jaksteveharry
they are the acoustic version of ska-punk band claypigeon - http://www.myspace.com/claypigeonband - and they are so good. they have this beatboxer who is awesome and tours on his own, too, and he's boss. they went on tour with my mate and i went to see them about three times because they are so good, haha.

so, babylon whackers record is out now in mainland europe.
http://www.myspace.com/babylonwhackers
but it's not out in the uk til friggin JULY. i am not happy. i am probably going to order from the mainland label, but i'm going to have to get some cash together and sort out the whole international money order type thing
I do apologise for the intrusion but we just had to tell everyone about the new Babylon Whackers album, 'Happy Days With...' which is being released on August 11th on Rebel Alliance Recordings. The Babylon Whackers is an all-star UK punky reggae party comprised of the ex-Filaments musicians and featuring Jonny One-Lung, Babar Luck and Majah Tunder on vocals... if you're a fan of the Clash, the Specials, Desmond Dekker, the Beat or the Filaments then this CD could very well be the soundtrack to your summer.
Go to http://www.rebelalliancerecordings.com/rebl002.cfm for a free Mp3 and to pre-order the CD!
Visit the Babylon Whackers - http://www.myspace.com/babylonwhackers
Cheers!

Dave's hilarious by just how grumpy he seems to be. I interviewed him for my project and went to his apartment and it was one of my favorite interviews I did.

i hate to be like jess and shamelessly promote another of torontos awesome ska bands BUT seriously, everybody should listen to the expos.
I bought their album 'old friends' like 2 months ago and sort of forgot about it because i left the country soon after and never put it on my creative. i found it on my computer the other day and its mostly AMAZING. little red hook, before breakfast and to be in love under the rain should all be checked via the myspace if you havent heard them before.

Dan, im sorry to inform you but the EXPOS were awesome.. old friends ( the first version) was released when the band was mostly members of the donuts, when they dropped the horn section they dropped my respect. im not trying to be mean but i went and saw them live and it sucked,
I'm actually not going to see Streetlight in October :(
Going to The Mountain Goats on the same day instead. I've seen Streetlight twice, and I really need to see The Mountain Goats. Life goal and all.

nah man, they are still awesome, the organ covers up a lot of the gaps. but they do have too many long instrumental bits, he needs to sing more, his voice is awesome.
there was like a dozen people when we saw them last in hamilton because the venue and time got changed but it was still awesome. except PDH opened.

i love pdh, and i dunno maybe its because the last time i saw them it was their first big show without the horns..
i still have to say the best band to ever come out of toronto is the makeshift heroes, one time, the band was so big they couldnt fit on the stage so the trombone player made himself a place on top of a huge amp and the trumpet player started dancing with the crowd.

PDH is pretty rocking, but too rocking to open for the expos. and especially not great with a crowd of 12 people. at this point you can still enjoy ska/reggae. but punk shows just not the same in an empty room...
i will investigate this makeshift madness.

a couple of weeks ago i went to see suicide bid for my birthday. it was their only show of the summer and it was AWESOME. and babylon whackers, dirty revolution and babyboom all supported along with a load of other people. it was seriously great. babyboom's set was amazing. i got smashed and danced so much that i got massively dehydrated. brilliant.

that tour hasn't happened yet! it's gonna be awesome, though....chief are on that tour too, and they are my favourite band this week. have been listening to their ep on repeat for 2 days solid at work. so awesome
last spring when chris murray toured was definitely the most special for me, i don't think that can be topped....he played at my friend's house, and the set lasted for about 2 hours. he was just taking request after request. was seriously one of the most awesome things i'd ever seen. we were all really drunk and busting for a pee, though. then i went to meet some different friends by camden canal a couple weeks later and he was there just chilling with them. totally awesome dude.

my hatred/jealousy of you grows every time you post!
1. you got to see suicide bid and babylon whackers!!! i would kill to see suicide bid and the 3 tracks of babylon whackers on their myspace i listened to solidly for like 3 months. amazing.
2. you just go to meet some friends and CHRIS bleedin' MURRAY is 'just chilling with them'! i would love to meet that guy and chat **** with him. i bet he smokes a lot of weed.
basically, i should move to london. have you ever got to see skylar?
on a different note, have you guys heard of 'sizzla'? i've only heard one track of his but it's immense, called 'live up' if i remember correctly, and was just wondering if anyone knew a good album of his or some standout tracks? unofficial myspace is myspace.com/sizzla420. yeah it's not ska but reggae.
