^^^ Has never heard the first three albums.

Yeah, actually I have all of their albums so you have no idea what you're talking about.

Name a few songs that you think are poppy.

Old RCR is ****ing awesome.

I agree.

Kithkin
01-17-2007, 05:18 PM
Old RCR was punk with horns, new RCR is pop-punk with horns.

Seriously like every Big D song is poppy.

Yeah. Especially Apology.

But really, the poppy is part of the ska in skapunk. Bands like Goldfinger and Smashmouth and Reel Big Fish play (mostly) a combination of ska and pop-punk. The Suicide Machines have some very poppy songs, but they (aside from their first release) don't play pop-punk.

Henrik
01-18-2007, 01:11 PM
Would you consider Smash Mouth ska-(pop)punk?

Flagjacket
01-18-2007, 01:15 PM
Yeah, actually I have all of their albums so you have no idea what you're talking about.

Name a few songs that you think are poppy.

I agree.
I was talking about RCR, and I actually think RCR's first album is pretty gay but their other three albums get better chronologically.

Ghostfire3
01-18-2007, 01:20 PM
Yeah, I know you were talking about RCR and I still don't think they were ever "poppy."

Flagjacket
01-18-2007, 01:34 PM
I never said they were? You siad they're rock n roll with horns, I disagreed because the first three albums are basically Rancid but with a horn line. And last time i chcked Rancid are pop punk so yeah poppy.

Kithkin
01-18-2007, 02:11 PM
I classify Rancid as bad, then bland ska-punk.

RCR are likewise bad recorded. But they used to make up for their bad albums with amazing live show. Then stardom went to all of their heads except the bassist.

For all I know, their newest album might sound better, but their new live show isn't.

And yes, Smashmouth play a combination of ska and pop-punk, as opposed to Less Than Jake who play ska-punk and pop-punk or the Suicide Machines who play Skapunk, hardcore, punk and pop-punk.

this is so dumb, even i am staying out of it.

01-18-2007, 04:37 PM
My mom and my brother and I had this arguement at least four years ago.

My mom kept insisting that smashmouth is ska. And we were both like "wtf, no it's just annoying."

I did like that song back in the day, though. not a ton, but I didn't hate it.

Kithkin
01-18-2007, 05:24 PM
All Star isn't a ska song, but their earlier hits were. They sounded a lot like goldfinger.

I mean, I don't have a smashmouth cd around to listen to or anything....

But I've got Wikipedia on my side:

In 1994 in San Jose, California, Steven Harwell was a veteran of a disbanded rap group called F.O.S. which had released only one single, "Big Black Boots", available only on vinyl. His former manager was Kevin Coleman. Harwell wanted to form a rock band, so Coleman introduced him to friends guitarist Greg Camp and bassist Paul De Lisle, both veterans of a local punk band called Lackadaddy. They met and held their first rehearsal later, with Coleman on drums. They named themselves Smash Mouth after a football term coined by Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, describing a style of hard, straightforward and barebones play. For the most part, the band played ska punk, somewhat popular at the time, although Harwell has since claimed that the band is variously influenced.

Smash Mouth got its break in 1996 when San Jose rock radio station KOME played a demo of the band's song "Nervous In The Alley" which achieved some notoriety. The group was signed by Interscope Records after a show, and Smash Mouth released a first album, Fush Yu Mang (inspired by something that Al Pacino said in the movie Scarface) the next year, sporting a title in a font suggesting Oriental characters.

"Walkin' on the Sun" was Smash Mouth's first major single, released 1997. The lyrics in "Walkin' on the Sun" present an ironic and implied Generation X view of the hippie movement, extolling ideals of peace and love, and the subsequent conversion of those ideals into simple commercial fads. The song was the lead single from Fush Yu Mang. The album combined light-hearted fun with songs exposing a darker side, such as "Disconnect the Dots" and the aforementioned "Nervous in the Alley". "Let's Rock" did moderately well as the third and final single, and the album went double platinum.

In 1999 Smash Mouth released a second album, Astro Lounge. This album involved much less of the band's previous ska influence. It is more laid back, sophisticated and retro-sounding, and to a point, poppy. Although the change drove away some of the original fanbase, many new fans discovered Smash Mouth, and Astro Lounge is possibly the most critically acclaimed album from the group. The album was also worthy of note in that it was the first Smash Mouth release that did not contain a single swear word, particularly strange in light of the fact that Fush Yu Mang had received a Parental Advisory warning from the RIAA.

The Astro Lounge single "All Star" became popular in mid-1999, and it was featured on the soundtracks for the movies Mystery Men and later Shrek and Rat Race. "All Star" was followed by another single, "Then the Morning Comes". "Stoned" and "Waste" followed and did moderately well as singles. Astro Lounge sold triple platinum, proving the band was not a one hit wonder as they had been previously tagged by critics for "Walkin' On The Sun". Kevin Coleman quit the band after Astro Lounge's release due to lower back problems. He was replaced by studio drummer Michael Urbano.

And hey, I was a fan of ska for a long time before I knew what it was too.

"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life"

Smash mouth was sweet because I had this nickelodean stereo player that was purple, and green gooze went through it while music played.

Lately I've been on OiNK downloading **** loads of ska recommendations, and so far my favorites have been: Skatalites, the toasters, the specials, Big D and the kids table, The Flatliners, AAA, SLM/C22/BOTAR, Suicide machines, and choking victim is sick.
I really am trying to find more of the speedy ska, like flatliners - with the poppiness of big D or SLM.

So I feel like being a little big generous. This is some ska from Michigan in 1982. My parents used to go see this band back when they played in bars all the time. It's just 8 songs, and it's nothing special, but since it's a part of my local history, I like it, and I thought you folks might want to give it a listen too.

Aye it helped me quite a bit. I've been listening to the heatskores now for a couple months and I am pretty sure between CV and them that it is my favorite area of ska. Skratch 3 was alright but what really stood out was Keepin 6, enough to where I'll probably try and find more.

What two tone do you guys listen to most?
I think my favorite is The Specials/Toasters..
Also what skatalites albums are the best in your opinion?

Twin Human Highway Flares
01-21-2007, 12:10 AM
Well, the Specials are a given, but I find myself listening to Madness every so often, and even sometimes the English Beat, though they kind of abandoned ska. I've heard a little Bad Manners through comps and stuff and like them but have yet to pick up an album. I think that the 2nd wave is perhaps the most consistently good of the waves. With the first, you get some comparatively boring stuff every now and then, and the third can get pretty iffy, but I've liked all the two-tone I've ever heard.

Burger Bike
01-21-2007, 01:35 AM

Jesus christ though some of these bands in the last couple pages that I've listened to are trying sooo hard to be sublime. It's really disgusting hahaha

High School Heist all go to my school. I've been to countless numbers of their shows. They keep improving every show I've seen them, they are going places. My band actually played a show with them on the 21st at Dior. **** that was a sick show. The Johnstones, K6 and The Knockouts were playing as well. This is the first time I've seen them mentioned without anyone mentioning The Good Times though. http://www.myspace.com/thegoodtimes

I'm guessing some people in here has heard of 4th wave, but just in case, http://4thwave.ca/ its basically the ska forum for toronto area bands/fans.

Check my band out too. We're playing a show with The Big Man Himself and another band called Rise of Abundance on the 8th. 15 bucks to get in, but theres free food, a fashion show and a magazine launch so brap.

My barber told me to listen to Ex-Cathedra cos i told him i like ska, but i could never find anything, cos neither me or him knew how to spell their name.

they're just not strong enough. i want to be convinced when i hear a horn play. not so much work as in tune wise, you just need to get more power behind each note. i understand playing a horn live is very very hard to get the perfect sound, trust i know.. but just work on power and the horns willl sound great.

What do you think is the best way to describe ska to someone? People have asked me what ska was and it's really kind of complicated. I hate to just say "Punk with horns" because it's definitely more than just that. I usually say "Think of a mix between Reggae, Jazz and Punk" and give them a few bands to check out.

Jessizzle
04-27-2007, 04:58 PM
i say, original ska started the reggae movement, really upbeat music. and then todays version of ska is upbeat pop punk with horns. ( it dosnt always have to have horns though)

lunchforthesky
04-27-2007, 05:10 PM
Ska is a Jamaican style of music played on the off-beat rhythm which sound wise mixes calypso music with elements of jazz.

Jessizzle
04-27-2007, 05:14 PM
yeah, if i said that to someone they would be like...

uum english please?? you gotta dumb it down for the public.

lunchforthesky
04-27-2007, 05:15 PM
In that case it sounds like Bob Marley but a little faster and more upbeat, with a bit of a jazz feel to it.

Jessizzle
04-27-2007, 05:17 PM
exactly.

when i tell people that i listen to ska, and explain to them its what started reggae, but alot more upbeat they go WHAT COOL!!!! AWESOME!!

theres always that random band, and everyes like uhh.. wwhy are they here?:S:S:S

like when catch 22 and VGS were here in the summer, some random local american band, i think the name had something to do with the radio.. well the band was lucky the reverb had no ins and outs.

I've been listening to too much streetlight.

http://www.myspace.com/themoonlitavenue (my bands rough work myspace)

All Your Fault, Wherever, and Really are all brand new songs I've written. I'd like some opinions (keeping in mind they're rough recordings i did with a computer mic in 5 minutes)

plus, opinions on my bands "regular" songs would be nice.

I liked Really and All your fault. Dominion wasn't bad. Breeze has a nice start but i think writing a more upbeat part to complement the mellow part is necessary. And your recordings on Sunny Avenue are pretty poor but I like rough scene.

I wrote those influences down a million bajillion years ago. Like pre-doug listening to ska.

Yeah the songs we have up right now are our weaker songs id say. I hate playing Fire Breathing Jesus because i feel juvenile playing/singing it, but its our most popular song. I wrote all that stuff before I got into Streetlight, and my drummer wrote Scene. It was recorded on just a simple two track TASCAM i got, previous to getting a SM 58.

Heres a song we never got around to finishing/mixing/fine tuning etc.

http://download.yousendit.com/E5BC51F77D96A786

Really pop-punky. The one guitar track is screwed up, and the girls back up vocals are mysteriously missing from everything except the last verse.

That recording does sound much better and I like that song. One suggestion for future on the chorus. after Someone Someone Someone when youre in need, someone someone someone you can see... maybe not try not to return to someone x3 right away. until the last 2 someones. Maybe try some other lyrics like "I know I need someone by my side...Someone Someone" or whatever.

And about the fire breathing jesus thing, i had the first song in my band seem really juvenile and if the band were still goin i would have changed the lyrics around a lot. But when it is the first song you release to your friends it is hard not to say no to it.

Tour starts in the beginning of July. I'm goin' July 13.

From their website:

So, a few tidbits from SM H.Q.:
1) Streetlight is going out this summer for a 2 month north american tour with reel big fish and less than jake. Dates will be posted soon. after that they'll be headlining again.

2) Yes, the new record will most definately be finished by then and they will be playing new material as well as old material. Finally!

3) Dear europe: Yes, SM will be seeing you (and more of you than the last two times ;-) sometime after the summer tour and the record's release. It's been too long, we know. zut alors!

Until next time!"

Anyone into ska should show up because all the bands will be putting in 110% for HSH's last show. Its at Reilly's, 340 yonge st, across the street from sam the record man. Doors at 6:30, 10 bucks to get in, 10 bucks for HSH's brand new cd, and 10 bucks for a HSH shirt. It may not have any big names, but it's likely to be one of the best shows of the year. I highly recommend coming out.

Holy **** guys, probably the second funnest show i've ever been to in my life, next to the Streetlight Manifesto/Aquabats. Even though I couldn't understand most of what they were saying when I was hanging out with them before the show (we had a private buffet and everything ) because of their thick accents, they are so fun live. SEE THEM if they come near you. The promoters who asked us to play liked us too, so hopefully next stop is the Bruce Lee Band

Right as I dropped my guitar off they directed me to this huge room with all of the band members and their skinhead friends, and this huge table with pizza, salads, pepsi, and various alcoholic beverages haha.
