I have, yes.
Bad Manners, The beat and Madness. Which bands should I give a listen also?
Or better, which albums are classic 2 tone albums?
Which Madness album did you hear? Their new one was really good.

Ok, so theres like 150 pages of posts and I don't really wana look through all of them so... Is there a guide here or somewhere in the internet that tells how ska strum? I've been in some sites and they're of no help. It just doesn't sound right.

Slightly mute the chord on the downstroke and then upstroke without muting the strings. Or am I misunderstanding the question?

Yeah, it's pretty simple, so robert's explanation is all you need. Jamaicans were high as hell when they invented ska, so you know it's not that difficult of a genre guitar-wise

Yeah, I've done that but it doesn't sound right. I'm pretty sure tjat I'm not doing it fast enough. How fast do you have to do that to have a Streetlight Manifesto sound?

comptonassrobert
06-08-2006, 02:55 PM
Ohh, you should've mentioned Streetlight Manifesto. Tomas is in no way an ordinary ska guitarist. He doesn't accentuate the upstrokes as much and he has a much warmer tone then other ska guitarists.

And speed isn't your problem because he isn't playing the same speed in every song. When you are doing the upstrokes don't hit the high E as much as you normally would, focus more on the lower strings

Apart from the paying 130 quid for the weekend ticket and 3 quid a burger. or 5 quid a meal. Oh, don't forget that you can't take in your own alcohol and you're not even allowed to bring in a bottle of tap water into the stage arena because they want you to buy the water from them. Festivals are too commercialised these days.

Oh god no! Paris Hilton made a pop video! It's terrible! Horrendous! Nasty! I wonder what it's like to be able to look in two directions at once.

Ok well now I'm just curious about Tomas' way of playing. Is there a strumming pattern or something? Or is it just really hard to put it in a tablature form? And if you can, can you tell me ASOB's strumming pattern as well? It doesn't sound like a normal ska strumming either, sounds more like Streetlight's

comptonassrobert
06-11-2006, 01:39 AM
Well firstly the guitar isn't prominant at all in any Streetlight songs, actually at some points you can barely tell there is guitar playing. So pretty much his strumming isn't anything special, he just has a lot warmer tone and he doesn't accentuate the upstrokes and instead of doing ska chords he does the normal barre chords.

for example instead of:
|-3----
|-3----
|-4----
|------
|------
|------

he uses:
|-3-----
|-3-----
|-4-----
|-5-----
|-5-----
|-3-----

That's true. Streetlight's music is very horn driven.

Mmhmm, their horn lines and songs in general are faaaaaaaaaaar more complex than anything Catch 22 or any other ska band has done.

I just got the Botar EP, it's the first time I've ever heard it.

I've had Everything Goes Numb for a year and Keasby Nights for a while. I was expecting something like that.

I'm actually kinda disappointed, everyone I've ever asked about them has said they were amazing, better than Streetlight...and it kinda let me down. Hopefully It'll grow on me after a few more listens.

I'm going to a big festival this summer. It's a bit expensive and there will be big bands too. BUT all the profit goes to charity in countries as Cambodia and such... I love festivals, they are a lot of fun.

Yeah man big outdoor festivals are awesome. If you're out earning money, I reckon they're a cool way to spend that money. It's just that feeling of chaos, and chilling outside with a beer watching a band you might otherwise have not taken the time to hear. Festival beer is awful, though, well Carling festival beer anyway.

Well from what wikipedia used to say (and it sounded right to me) is that Tomas uses the normal style of syncopated strumming but the full barré chords are strummed in semi-quavers instead of crotchets; giving only one rest of percussive strum of the strings every 4 strums as opposed to every strum.
Hopefully that makes sense, he's basically just strumming his guitar in 16th notes and dampening the strings every 4 strums to give it that ska-ish feel.

As for Jeff Rosenstock, I'm pretty sure he just plays an insanely fast variation of the normal 3rd wave kind of strumming.

I only own Chris Murray's "6 songs" which I found on promo for like £3 in Punker Bunker once and bought cus I'd heard of his solo stuff before. Bloody hell, it's brilliant. But I haven't bought any stuff since. Just been to see him a couple times. Punker Bunker promo stuff used to be the best, introduced me to tons of stuff, but they've had less the last couple times I've been down there :(

My town didn't have a single ska band up until earlier this year. We had a reggae dub that did a couple Special covers and that was about it. So instead of showing the band I was in, I'll show 5 Finger discount. http://www.myspace.com/5fingerdiscountsucks

Of course it's not fair.
The Descendents and Nofx are pop-punk. Do they sound like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan?

Hell even bands like the Offspring should be pissed that they're lumped in with those two. The Offspring Are Definately Pop-punk, but there's a difference: They're actually good at playing their genre.

The Aquabats music is simple, but it's just too fun to not like it.

Of course they don't. And I know The Descendents and Nofx sound unalike.

I don't understand. Are you trying to agree with me, or disagree?

I was responding to Catchthe22, when he said it wasn't fair to say the last Aquabats album was Pop-punk, because it sounds nothing like Good Charlotte, or other GC equiviants. My point was that Bands like The Descendents and Nofx, are both pop-punk, but both sound miles away from what Good Charlotte equivilants sound like, even though they're in the same genre.

So I guess what I was trying to say was that genres have diviersity. Of course The Descendents aren't going to sound like Fall Out Boy any time soon. But they're still both pop-punk.

Catchthe22
08-24-2006, 09:47 PM
Its true. I didnt think it all the way through. Because there can be good pop punk. I like poppy catchy stuff and I like punk. Just not when they are fused together by certain bands. But some bands do it in a way i enjoy. But on a side note Aquabats are like a Rock/poppunk/newwave band imo.

I'm not sure if it's fair to call them anything. They have ska songs, pop-punkish songs, techno songs, synth-pop songs, and just about everything in between. The Aquabats are the Aquabats. I don't think anything else really fits completely.

im sure people are getting tired of my not completely being in line with your thoughts. also theres not much of a ska scene here. but heres my "question". from the skanking description, it seems a lot like some forms of two stepping in the hXc scene. are they tied? or the same thing? also a vid of skanking would help so i see visually what it is.

actually two-stepping does look a lot like skanking. Only more extreme.

REAL two stepping is a country music dance though.

In other news...

A band from my area, The Expos, is going on a North American tour with the One Night Band. Go see them when they come to your town. It'll be worth it.

Give you the easy answer...skanking is what you make it. Usually invovles legs kicking or running in place. Arms swinging close to body or extending out. Good basic example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMBmzo34vew One keeps the legs bent and the other is mixing it up with extending the leg and keeping one bent while skanking. Another example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLPvbvnwETc this time the guy has a faster different style from the normal. Shorter leg movements but he is making a lot of distance on the floor. Seems like somethign better for a fast ska song or ska punk song. If you are at least dancing yoru *** off at a ska show you will get respect. skanking or not skanking.

And for you guys that are bored out of your asses(dont recommend if you arnt)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMBmzo34vew

You'll want the Toasters and Mark Fogo's Skasters and Westbound Train the Slackers. They're great for bridging the gap between the 3rd wave and the first two waves.

If you like the Toasters and Mark, you can move into the Specials and Madness and the English Beat and the Selecter and if you like the Slackers and Westbound Train, you can move into The Skatalites and Desmond Dekker and Hepcat and Toots and the Maytals and Ernest Ranglin.

Neither of which are 2-tone.

I will say that they aren't nearly as impressive without 2 of their horns. When I first saw them, the singer and 4 horn players were all choreographed and they liked to get on each others backs and there were a lot more horn tricks. Kithkin
12-01-2006, 10:16 PM
Failing, Flailing is probably the weakest song on the album. It has my favorite lyrics: "So you say your life's a bore, and I can't quite disagree/when you judge your life by the pieces of ****/that inhabit your tv/and they walk so tall and they talk so proud and every other word is a lie I've found and anyone who is anyone is waste of time/waste of ti-iiiii-imeeeeeeeeee."

The song's music is undeveloped compared to the rest of the album.

But, I think A Better Place, A Better Time may incorperate parts of other songs (as it is the last song on the album). I haven't noticed it (aside from the fact that all Catch22/Streetlight songs sound similar) but I wouldn't put it past the lovable, arrogant son of a bitch.

There isn't much to talk about ska these days. News is a little dry at the moment.

Big D has a split EP coming out this month.

and a full length coming out in March.

Sure, they're pretty much Pop-punk with Horns now, but they're the best band in that category IMO.

Pop-punk with Horns

Six months ago I heard that exact phrase used to describe Big D.

That's because that's what they play.

They're fun I'm seeing them in April with Anti-Flag.

When I saw big D, I didn't much care for them.

I had fun when I saw Anti-Flag, though, but I don't like them all that much. I was there to see against me! anyway.

When I saw them at Warped a few years ago, the crowd was skanking in a really slow circle and were barely even moving. It was annoying as hell.

No, that's what the River City Rebels play. Big D play skapunk.

The onion gave BOTAR one of the "worst band names of the past year"

Using the word “bandits,” minus 5 points. “Revolution,” another five. “Acoustic,” minus 15. Using them together, minus 1,000 points.

I love BOTAR's name. Granted, it's kind of annoying to have to write out the whole thing or have it come up in iTunes or something, but that's easily remedied.

No, the River City Rebels play rock n' roll with horns and a little punk influence.

Big D plays ska-punk that sometimes may be a little poppy. They're pretty cool live.

Before I saw them live at the show, I saw them in this little restaraunt joint me and my friends were eating at and their singer was soooo high. His eyes were completely cashed and he was just sitting there staring at a wall.

Big D may have one or two songs that may be poppy even though I cant even think of one. Assuming ska pop punk is kind of like Reel Big Fish and LTJ(before the last album). 95% of everything Big D does is ska punk or just plain ska.

Anyways i get to see RBF next month. Last time i saw them it was 5 years ago. Exciting.

Big D don't really use offbeats that often... Who is on the other half of the split ep?
Ohh and it better be better than that last rare dub ep they made. I rushed out and bought it but, even though I respect them for trying something new, I was really disappointed!

Here's an idea - let's just accept that Big D and the Kids Table is a musical group with definite ska and punk influences and stop arguing about what nice little subgroup they fall in.

Genre arguments are ridiculous.
