a friend of mine wants me to come down and record his band. but i am only able to use 4 mics for recording the drums a sm57 akgd112 and a couple dynamic mics that i dont know the name of the brand. i need some help on what drums to put each mic on and what to use for over heads.

Thanks

The AKGD112 is probably the best bass drum mic out there. And the SM57 is probably the best snare and instrument mic out there. It matters on the mixer, the set size, and for the overheads I mean being cheap isn't always that bad lol... you can get Nady mics on Musicians Friend for $10 cheap huh... yea but I would maybe buy them and use them for the overheads until you have a better solution.

Ok then:

AKG in the bass drum, failing that in front of it

Shure by the floor tom

dynamics as overheads on either side- put them under the cymbals to pick up the toms n snare as well

I would go SM57 on snare, AKG on the bass, and you could try the 2 dynamics as overheads, but i'd suggest get hold of two condensor mics if u can. I've just finished recording my band's drum tracks, also with 4 mics, in this same way(with condensors as overheads, not dynamics) , and the result was excellent.
