Alright, My name is Brandt. I usually post in bass guitar, but I have been getting interested in singing a lot more lately. I just have a couple questions that I am sure have been asked before. I generally practice singing in my car, along with bands ranging from Tool to Bad Religion to 311.

Every once in a while, I can sing great with complete range, but that only lasts about 5 minutes. After that, I just start not being able to sing loud. I dont really know how to describe it, but my voice feels almost cramped up. I will try and relax slightly, but I still can only sing quieter. When I say quieter I mean singing with melody, but more in the low-end. I will use the song "3 libras" as an example. The verses I can always sing, and sometimes (only for a short amount of time) I can sing the chorus. I think I have a fairly good voice and would like to explore singing, but I cant nearly reach what little potential I may have if I for some reason cant sing loud.

So I am wondering why it is that when I sing loud for a short period of time, my voice starts to go away even when I relax? I am 17 years old if that helps.

Oh, just a side question... I smoke the occasional cigarette (less than 1 a day) but am stopping. I also smoke marijuana fairly frequently. I have no problem stopping smoking cigarettes, but I would prefer to not stop smoking marijuana :p . Are these things extremely bad for your voice?

Alright, I am sure you get both of these questions all the time, so thanks for any input you can give

You probably aren't supporting your sound with your diaphragm; you're probably trying to "squeeze out" your sound with your throat. Your throat should feel tension-free, as should your jaw, tongue, mouth, and entire upper body.

Your best bet is to find a good teacher to give you the basics of singing technique.

Oh, and weed is bad. In fact, scientific studies show that it's worse than tabacco ciggies. Smoke is the enemy of singers, who use their lungs and breath to create sound. :)
