To give us a break from people asking how they can get great recording results with one computer mic, this thread is for designing your "ideal" home studio where the budget is $1000. I'm still working on mine.
I am the only one who will find this game fun, I bet.

My first thought to this was, $1000? That's next to nothing, then I realised how bad the game would be if we all went "I would have 64 XLR input desk, with a 700 pounds dragon fly mic"
532.53 That's $1000 roughly in pounds.
For my actual recorder.
A good old, Tascam 424 MKIII = 250 pounds from studiospares
Combined with a Behringer UB1202 for extra inputs = 60 pounds from soundlive.co.uk
Mics
Superlux DRK-A4 Drum Mic set - These mics double up into other instrument roles very well. = 40 pounds from baldbeat.co.uk
MXL 990 Condenser Microphone = 75 pounds soundslive.co.uk
Preamp
Behringer MIC 200 Tube Preamp = 40 pounds
Cables
6 Proel Livewire XLR Male to XLR Female (6M) = 40 pounds
Mic Stands
1 Studio Spares Studio boom stand = 10
4 Baldbeat Drum mic clamps = 14
In total this = 529 pounds and is pretty close to my current set up.
I have the tascam 424 MKIII, the superlux mics, the behringer preamp, the mic stand and clamps, Im just missing the mxl990 and the ub1202.
At the moment I've just got a usable no name condenser.
Fun game, much more fun than listing a ton of crap that costs thousands of pounds on an open endded budget.

Do we get to work with what we already have, or just build it from scratch, with a thousand bucks?

Behirnger UB1204FX - £104
behringer value, and I can use the FX for compression, reverb etc...
Zoom CR-4 £195
with amp modelling and built in monitors, i guess this'd be the centre of my setup.
=£300
Mics:
2x Shure SM57's £140
Audio technica PRO25 for bass drum- £65
= £505?
But, i am amazed how kk can get a set of drum mics for £40. I am so there.

I'd play if there was more money involved...

Being able to buy a 3,000 recording desk would take the game away from the game, there would be no point in playing it if you didn't have to think, by putting a small budget on the studio, you are forced to think carefully and evaluate what you need for the studio rather than saying, oh I'll have a behringer 30 band graphic e.q., 128 channel digital mixing desk, 17 dragonfly mics e.t.c.
1,000 is still a fair amount when used correctly.

The only way I know how to record is using a digital recorder, that costs 1000 dollars. Other than that we bought a b-1 behringer condenser, a shure sm57, a shure XLR PG something mic, the cables and stands for the mics and thats about it. All my sound proofing stuff is hand me down freebie things.

I think 65-70 is the going price for SM57's in the UK, although I will agree they are worth about 40 instead.

I dunno, I can't be arsed adding stuff up right now.
All I can say is I'm building a PC for my room soon, getting a decent soundcard in that, hopefully get hold of some 2nd hand monitor speakers, a small mixer and some other stuff.
BTW KKKKKKocaine, have you happened to check out that music shop on Eastgate called Big Deal?
There's some good stuff in there, but it's a bit overpriced:(
£125 for a 2nd hand Shure SM58:eek:

I've seen it but never been in, I'm tempted to go and slap the owner upside the head for pricing an overpriced mic even more. That's almost double the retail price.

The Womackinator will sort them out.
When you start the course, you'll know what I mean.
