beginner singing

I was wondering how to get started doing vocals. I am in a metal/rock band...and we don't have a vocalist, I play guitar, and I was thinking about taking up vocals. only problem is I don't really know how to sing, or how to hit certain notes. I have a decent ear, like I can tell when I'm hitting the right note when I sign with my guitar and stuff, but I can't really tell the difference when other people are singing. what are some excersizes and stuff that I can do to get better at singing?

If you're really serious about wanting to sing, you should take lessons. It doesn't matter at all what style you want to sing, lessons are always the best way to go.

Take lessons, because if you try to sing by yourself with no previous training, sooner or later you will mess up your voice and won't be able to sing for like a month.
