Are there any downsides to being on an independent label? My band is looking to make a name for themselves and are thinking of sending demos to independent labels to get signed? Also, what all do they do for you?

They won't be able to promote you like a major lable will and they won't be able to get you as big of gigs. You will also have more of a responsibility in the actual sale of your CD.

but a plus to being on an independant label is that you have better odds of being their prized act and you have a better chance at getting more of their attention. Plus its a lot easier than getting signed to a major label. AND you wont get screwed as easily

The main differences between major and independent record companies is as follows, Independent record labels are often on a much smaller budget, usually run by enthusiasts with small staff and a smaller manufacturing and distribution ability, however it is often for an independent record company to offer a larger percentage of royalties to an artist, In contrast, a major label will offer less royalties, but a larger advance, they will have more staff, better distribution capabilities, and with a much larger budget.

As for what they will do for you, promotion, manufacturing, set up gigs and showcases, work with distributors to get you into certain shops.

You get to do that on all record labels.
