I'm not sure if this was the write section to post this but here it goes....

Hi, I'm a guitar player and I've discovered what a chapman stick is. It is possibly one of the most intriguing instruments I've seen and I'm dying to learn how to play. When I found out how much they were I just about shat.

I'm wondering, if there are any "Stick players/musicians" on this board if they could point me in the right direction on how I should go about learning this instrument. I do really want to study this instrument, but I'm not willing to pay $1300 or more just to find out I can't play it, or its not gonna work out for me.

If you want, you can post here, or better yet email me or add me to your MSN using this address: r_duncan_mcknight@hotmail.com

Thanks

Rob

Tag'owned.

It doesn't look like the most common of instruments to me, so you will probably have toruble finding one for cheap. I presume you've tried ebay?

no, I've never used ebay before, but now that you mention it, I will. *goes to ebay*
Still, it'd be cool if anyone who actually owns one of these things and plays could contact me, that'd be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Moaner ;)

I actually watched Sean Malone playing his stick and I actually wrote some "stick-style" riffs on my guitar just trying to mimick his technique. But its not the same... still cool though.

Chapman Stick = best instrument ever.

Sean Malone = bloody amazing. (Where'd you see him play?)

Anyway, I've researched a lot about the Stick, and as a bassist I can tell you that the instrument seems to be more popular among the bass community. I recommend posting this in the Bass forum to get better replies, or just search old bass forum threads on the Stick. I know there's been plenty in the past.

TonyChoyIsGod, one of the bass forum members, actually plays a Stick. As far as I know, he's the only one here that does. I don't think he posts much anymore, but try and get his attention and he's sure to answer your questions. From what I remember, he subscribed to the Chapman Stick newsletter and got his Stick from a seller advertising therein.

And about learning to play, go to www.stick.com - there are plenty of instructional books and videos available which are the best way to learn Needless to say, it does help if you actually have a Stick first.

That is, without a doubt, the coolest thing I have ever seen.

yeah - I just wish I had enough money and little enough sense to tell me that that would be a good purchase...
