View Full Version : Half-Life 2 is pissing me off, and I haven't played it yet
Can someone explain to me why it's taking me hours to install this ****ing game, what this Steam thing is, and why I have to constantly update? All I want to do is play the ****ing game... I swear, I've been "decrypting necessary game files" for hours now, and I'm getting ****ing pissed...
... and nothing online is helping me out, so I figure I'd come to MX for answers :(

The game is huge, memory wise.
Steam updates it automatically (Fixes bugs etc in the game)
Just be patient, it will be worth it.

Ive got to ring Valve help line cos I tried to reinstall but the Key wouldnt work.
I wanted to reinstall because it was taking hours trying to install HL2,HL1source and CS source. when it finished it wasnt working. So I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it,but as I said before the key becomes dead once you use it once

I uninstalled HL2, but when I went to reinstall it from disk it said some file was missing. I opened up Steam and the Available Games list had HL2, Deathmatch, CS:Source, and Codename Gordon listed. I clicked on HL2 and it began downloading the files I needed to complete the install directly from the Steam servers. Once I finished downloading the files, I was able to play the game.
Do you have Steam installed? If so, maybe you could do the same thing.

Steam allows you to update automatically. This means that any of the games that are marked for "Automatically keep this game updated" will download the updates when they're released and when the servers aren't busy.
Which means that if you have all the games marked for automatic update then they download speeds will be really slow for some games and really fast for others.
It's easier to download updates for two games at a time, then when they're completed, set to automatically update the next two, exit out of Steam, and then re-log.

Hl2 andCS:S where running fine on my comp, but after the first update, it started crashing during loads, and after the next one, I cant play either one now until I get my new video card, and it pisses me off because I completely uninstalled and reinstalled, but the game autoupdates even if you have auto update turned off, and **** am I pissed.

I'm not so sure about buying Half-Life 2 now.. :\
I got it working. It took forever, but I started playing it, and it is indeed an intense game.
Thanks for the help, though :)
hmmm well, i had steam installed previously with Half Life 1 and regular CS.
bought HL2, installed the 5 discs, steam updated some crap automatically, and everything worked fine :D
dont worry, once u get it to work, HL2 Singleplayer is hella fun! plus CS:S is awesome too!
delayed gratification :D

steam= patience sometimes it takes a while but hl2 is worth it
oyeah you only have to instert your cd key once.
if you delete the folders you can just download them again you don't have to enter the cd key again

Thats what was taking so long. It was taking 5 hours to download the info for HL2,HL1source and CS source.then when it finished it hadnt even been complete.thats why im annoyed. If I had just bought the normal version and just installed HL2 on its own then I wouldnt be in the mess.

I dont understand why people are complaining so much about the installation time, it took me 25 minutes to install it, and in that time I was playing some need for speed underground 2. Not that bad, well worth it too because HL2 owns. :thumb:

there's something rewarding about launching a 3' rusty sawblade at a rediculously high velocity towards zombies using a gravity weapon.
