What is the worst feeling you have lost by the closest points and was it an important game?

I played soccer for one year when I was 7 or 8, and I gave up 13 goals in on game. Worst loss ever, and they were all my fault. So after the game was over the coach lit into us with words a 7 year old shouldn't be hearing, and he then quit.

This game of rugby Myself and my team were playing a local school, who were local rivals. I was playing hooker. We had a severly understrength team with most of our best players in grinds or unavailable. The last time we had played this team we had got hammered, and that was at full strength.
We played well and at half-time it was 0-0 and we were pretty happy, and confident we would win. Then in the second half, we had no replacements so everyone was tired and then our winger let two tries past him. I was pissed to say the least. I was happy then later because Ireland beat South Africa in rugby :)

(american) Football game that my team played. Lost 54-0
That was abysmal...
A couple of days ago we had a hockey game. My team was in first by one point. If we lost we would drop to second and that meant we might not make it to the city championships. We were playing the team third from the bottom and we were losing 2-0 at the end of the first. I scored on a nice breakaway in the second that put us behind by one. In the last minute we had to pull our goalie. We were crashing the net hard but couldn't get the ouck past the line. We lost, 2-1. Everyone was so pissed off. We might still have a chance at the city's if we win our next four straight games. We probably will, but we ruined our definite spot.

In football, my school was down 23-8 with like, four minutes left. We drove downfield and scored a TD and got the two-pointer with about two and a half minutes left. We kicked it deep, got them to punt with a minute and ten seconds left. We managed to score again with like, five or six seconds left to make it 23-22, and the snap for the extra point sailed over the holder's head (pretty much the same thing that happened to the Lions last week). Game over, we lose.
A lot of our losses in baseball were tough too. In one game we were down 7-2 late, managed to score five runs in the top of the final inning....and then give up a walkoff home run to lead off the bottom of the inning.

We were playing our rivals in the state hockey tournament. We had beat them the last two years in a row. The first year we beat them, then lost in the title game. The second year, we played and beat them to win the state title.
In the 3 years we'd been coached by the same guy, he kept track of a lot of stats. One was that in those 3 years, every game that I allowed 2 goals or less, we won, every time. Well they got up 2-1 and with about a minute left I went to the bench for the extra skater. We had a big flurry of shots but nothing went in, and we lost.
That was sad.

This thread has actually gotten some good responses..
About a year ago, We made it to the finals in soccer and it was against the best team in state, and there was like 5 minutes left in second half and we got a penalty kick, and he kicked it over the goal and they ended up winning 1-0...It sucked none the less.

In my freshman year at high school, we had a Battle of the Classes where each grade selects 30 members and they play sports and relays. At the end, a final score is given and a winner gets money for their year's prom. I was selected to the team and since there was no pressure, because the freshmen always lose, we actually performed really well. In the end we got beat by the sophomore class, 72-71 in overall points. It was terrible.
Football game when I was a freshmen at our rival
50-0
next year sophomore same team against same school
49-7
ok junior year im no longer playing for them but i go watch anyway
57-0
Not a good matchup :(
Oh and many Sacto/La NBA west final games have been crappy, at the last second.

My (normally horrible) soccer team was playing the section champions, and we managed to tie the game up 3-all going into overtime. Then they scored.
We were SO ****ING CLOSE! And the next time we played them, we lost 6-0.

PLaying in the provincial cup finals for my soccer team. We played a very equal team to ours, which we could have easily beat on a better field (the one we played on was all dried up and full of dirt). ANyways, it was 1-1 at the end of the game, and still 1-1 near the end of overtime. They got this one lucky break, and their forward was chasing down a through ball played over the head of our centre defenceman. Thankfully our defenceman got there first, and under the pressure of the forward, had no choice but to clear it over the top of our net. Except, he mistimed it and put it top corner. Beautiful goal to say the least, if he had been on the opposing team. DOnt wanna be too harsh, he's my best friend.
Not only does it stink to lose the championships, but to lose the championship to a team which did not beat you.
Also, we lost the first game we ever played as a new soccer team (when we were like 11) 13-1. Now that was horrible.

I used to play in a soccer team for a tiny little village in Norfolk called Hopton. We were facing Great Yarmouth town - another local team, but a few hundred times better, and obviously about three leagues above us - it was the quarter final of the Norfolk Cup... I was about 18 at the time, and this was an adult game - most of the team was well over 20, but I got chosen in goal, as I'd been playing pretty well, and our #1 keeper was over 40, and getting on.
Anyway, the game kicks off, and almost instantly one of their midfielders hammers a curling shot from about 30 yards out. I swear blind to this day, I'll never quite know how I got to it. I'm only just a shade over 6 feet now, and back then I would have been a few inches under it. Apparently it was headed straight for the top-right corner, but I'd managed to get the faintest of fingertips to it to push it onto the post/bar. From there, I barely stopped all game.
Shots were coming in from all angles, as our defence was a bit ropey to say the least, although we had a pretty impressive attack. We went in at half time 1-1 - theirs coming from a goalmouth scramble which had resembled a pinball machine.
The second half came up, and it was business as usual. We were well and truly under siege. We then managed to snatch a goal at the other end, putting us 2-1 to the good with ten minutes to go.
On 86 minutes, they got a penalty. Their left winger had crossed the ball in, I'd gone up for the ball, their striker had gone up, and we hit each other like a flying express train. We both went down like we'd been shot, and the ref gave a penalty. The problem was, I stayed down. It turned out I'd broken two ribs. The problem was, the referee wouldn't let us make a substitution (clearly against every rule in the book - I was pretty badly hurt, and was gasping for breath) so I had to take up the goal line for the penalty. I really had no intention of saving it, but when the other guy hit it, I made a half-assed move in the direction of the ball - as luck(sic) would have it, it cannoned into my chest, right where I was already in agony. I stayed down for good this time, and the ball trickled underneath me for the equaliser.
I was bought off and taken to hospital, where I was told that we'd lost.
3-2.

Oh man, I was 12, and our hockey team was playing our in city rivals for a chance to go the state playoffs. The score was stuck at 0-0 until about 3 minutes were left in the 3rd period. Well, one of the other team's wings gets a breakaway and our defenseman chases him down and knocks him down right before the wing took a shot on goal. Of course he is awarded a penalty shot, and our goalie fails to make the save. We weren't able to tie it back up, and they got to go to the playoffs. :upset:
They ended up losing in the first round though, by a score of 7-0

well yesterday in my hockey tournement we won 7-1, but the third line we had scored 4 of the goals, and the sad thing about that is that i was center (i play defence, never played center in my life), the winger switches from offence to defence, plays where ever needed and the other guy usually on the second line with the two best on our team, never really does anything. i had a goal, the left wing had 2 goals and an assist, and the right wing had a goal and 2 assists, and our line was just three guys put on a line because there was no spot for them on the other lines
i bet the other team loved that

I still cannot believe my Patriots lost that game. I blame Rodney Harrison's pass interference call in the endzone.

I was playing Rugby union at the national's and we made it to the major semi's and we were winiing by 4 points with 30 seconds to go and our flyhalf who is wallaby level throws a ball a lot like carlos spencers of the world cup(aus vz nz) and this fast centre a lot like mortlock intercepts and runs 70 metres to score and win the game. Our whole team was just like :upset: and then when they announce Possible VZ probable sides only 3 of our lads were picked. Dirrty cheats hated us.
