Im about to start playing with my church band. I need a crash that would sound nicely without hitting it hard. Somewhere along the "thin" lines.
AA and Hand Hammered Extra-Thin Crashes. Perfect for a church setting.

I'm looking to incorporate a china into my set, nothing pricy or fancy just something good to start on, heard a 14" wuhan is good all the way up to 18" zildjians
also maybe a cheap splash to put in just for some fun effects, what do you guys suggest
again nothing real pricy
(and yes, congrats to me... i learned how to use the cymbal finder :) )

hey nzrocker, how do you like that avedis zildjian sweet ride, i've been thinkin' of buying one?
I really really like it. I played it in a pop/rock band and it doesn't sound too out of place, but it REALLY shines when you're playing garage rocky stuff. I played it today with a band, think hives-ish music, and i barely needed a crash. Beautiful dark bell tone and a great crash sound for when you need it.

do u guys know of any versatile hats for most types of music especially rock, pop, fusion, funk and would not sound out of place when playing jazz? preferably some nice crisps when playing funk and a fairly amount of sizzle when playing jazz.

I would suggest something like Sabian AA, they have a really nice sound.
But try out anykind of cymbal before you buy it incase it isn't the sound for you.
Sabian's site has a soundcheck for their cymbals, it's not brilliant but it gives you a decent idea of how the cymbals sound.

buy a wuhan. they're cheap and they sound pretty good. I got 12'' and it sounds like some pro chinas. Its really funky.
And for the splash, you can also look into wuhan.

sabian B8pro Effect Pack. The 18" Chinese is great, and the 10" splash is decent. Failing that, cant go wrong with an 18" or 20" Wuhan, with a Sabian PRO Splash.

Can I get an opinion on the pairing between some HHX Power Hats and a HH RBD Ride? I'm currently in the process of ordering the ride but I guess it's on back order from wherever and they offered me anything else from any line up to the value I paid and I was curious if anything would suit me better.

well, i think the Power hats are a little too heavy...for me anyway....think of them as dark AA Rock hats.
the Raw-bell dry ride, is actuly somewhat bright. the HH Rock ride would be a good alternative. a little more lively and agressive, due to the bigger bell and slightly heavier weight.

in my opinion, if your looking for a dry cutting ride, go with the AA, or AAX dry rides. the AA will have the bigger bell of the two.

I'm looking for a 16" crash to compliment my AA medium ride. I'd like something in the AA or AAX lines. Nothing very thin or very heavy with medium to long decay and a bright sound. I really like the AAX Dark crash and plan on buying one maybe in a few months after my new kit so somthing that would also work well with this. If you could suggest maybe 3 or 4 cymbals that would be great, i will try them out when i goto the store next week. Also, I will be needing to upgrade my hats soon as well. Currently i have no crash and **** hats, do you think i should get a crash first or upgrade my hats first? I hate not having a crash and i do have hats so to me it would seem more logical to get a crash... Opinions? For the hats I would like soemthing again in AA or AAX lines that is very a crisp and clear with a great "washy" open sound. if a store tells you they cant get a 17" AA Medium Crash, its either because of 1.) They do not carry ANY Sabian Product. or 2.) They Lied.
for just about any sabian crash, 17" is a more than available size.

I'm looking for a ride for around $150 US. What are my options? Darker is preferable but that tends to cost more.
I'm surfing around for a crash now, and I've gained interest in a 18" HHX Studio Crash. One thing though, is that they describe the cymbal as 'thin'. I'm a little worried although I do have some confidence in my technique, so would this work for say, hard rock, and yet lighter stuff, or studio work, pop and that kind of stuff? Will it break easy under any of those conditions mentioned?

This might be a stupid question but, when a Cymbal means fast decay what does that mean?
Decay is the amount of time it takes to fade off. Fast decay means that it fades very quickly, like a fast crash. Quick, bright, and the sound fades fast.

Look into some Paiste Sigs, you'll never go wrong
On a more economical note.. you can look at maybe A New Beat hats, maybe a Sabian HH Rock Ride.

more economical, yes.....really saving money - not really....they're still gonna run around $400 for the pair. if your willing to spend $400, you might as well save up and Get whatever you want.

think Splash cymbals....doesnt get any faster for decay.

i bought a sabian xs20 20" ride today, it's pretty nice. i saw the a custom, it sounded really good, and i was also looking at a hand-hammered 20" and a paragon 21" (all rides obviously). the xs20, IMO, was the best sounding for its price. i don't recall how much the a custom ping was, maybe 170 (trying to remember offhand), and i spent 110 on the xs20. now to upgrade the rest of my cymbals from b8's to whatever the f--k i want :)

FNG here, I've been drumming for a little over a year now and am in the market for a 19" crash to ride on. I play alot of hardrock/metal but also some funk and jazzy type stuff on occasion. Anyways my current cymbal setup is a 20" A Ping Ride, 17" A Custom Projection Crash, and 14" A Mastersound hihats. I have been considering a 19" A Rock Crash because it's a little thicker and still has a nice musical sound too it. But at the same time I love the sound of my A Custom Pro. Crash when I need to ride it, and have been thinking about a 19" version of it. I'm just wondering if it's to thin to be constantly riding. Suggestions? Comments? Thanks guys!

Can anyone recommend a ride cymbal that has dark overtones, good wash/sustain and "cuts through?" I do not really like cymbals, particularily the ride, to be too shimmering or pingy. Right now I have Zildjian K an 18" constantinople and 20" EAK with A mastersound hi hats. Please guide me with a ride cymbal that might complement this setup. I perfer Zildjian but other brands are welcome too. I've tried the A 21" Sweet Ride and A 20" Medium ride and really like their sound. Good choices?

i agree with Seafroggys, an A or AA Medium Thin...but for gigging, i'd suggest the Medium. when you add other instruments (Especially amplfied ones) you will quickly notice a long sustaining cymbal be shortened.

03-25-2005, 12:55 AM
Any one size of cymbal within a specific line of Sabian will always cost the same. a 20" ride will cost the same as a 20" crash or 20" china, etc. I think for the HH, a $280 seems a bit much for an HH. HHs can't be that much more expensive then AAs, and I got my 18" AA for $137.
bobby__johnny

AA/AAX = 20" Ride = 20" Crash = 20" Chinese for price

^I like the way that works, makes it easier to know the price of other cymbals if you know the price for the same size, and 14" hats will usually run about the same as a 22" cymbal.13" hats will usually run for about a 21" cymbal price, and as for 15" hats don't ask me how much....^

the thing about the signature line, is that they were designed specifically for the drummers who's names are on them. This could mean that the cymbal might work out for you, but most likely would not. Now, if your right into jazz, and want to have that very same sound, then maybe the Crystal ride is worth looking into. if you just want a jazzy ride, then i suggest the AA Flat ride first.
as for the Vault Artisan ride, i havent tried one, but from the way Sabian describes it, i'm guessing its their take on the Constantinople rides Zildjian makes.

Well, first hi@all, this forum looks really great, I hope that I can learn a bit from other drummers :thumb:
Now, my question:
I have had 13 years of professional drumming lessons and am searching for a metal-Band at the moment. The only problem (except finding a band near my home  ) is my drumset. Perhaps you know www.thomann.de, they sell Drumsets from "Millenium" with their own no-name-cymbals in their shop, I have such an Drumset at home :amaze: , and I started to upgrade my cymbal-set with an Paiste Dimensions 17" Medium heavy Crash, and it fits really great to the rest of my cymbals (14"-Medium-HiHat no-name (HLX is printed on them), 16" no-name (HLX too), 20"-Ride (HLX), 8" Meinl Headliner Splash, 10"-Meinl Headliner Splash (this one is in a very bad state, lots of loooong cracks, a big piece of it flew away already :naughty: , this "cymbal" is treatened as a mini-Chinese ^^).
I myself am a really great fan of Paiste, and I want to upgrade my drumset mostly with Paiste-cymbals. As I already mentioned I am a metal-drummer so I need cymbals that can stand my aggressive playing. I have already an eye on the Dimensions 18" Power Crash, but I want to buy either a new ride-cymbal (should sound pingy and loud, not too dark, my sticking should be heared over my double-bass-playing ;) ) or new HiHat-Cymbals (should sound crispy, but not too agressive, thought about the Dimensions Medium Crunch HiHats).
There I need your advice: I am a student at the moment, so I can't buy everything together, so what would you upgrade first: the HiHat or the Ride-cymbal? Can you recommend me perhaps a cymbal from another manufacturer (the Zildjian Z Custom 20"-Ride sounds great, too, but does it fit to the Paiste Dimensions?)?
Thank you very much!
(And sorry for spelling- or expression-mistakes, I am from Germany :p )

alwyas hats a ride first.
for the ride, i'd say an A. Zildjian Rock Ride would be a good choice, and as for the Dimensions, that could be a little too dark for what your looking for....maybe try the 2002 Power Crash.

Having two identical type crashes with just an inch difference always seems a bad idea - too similar in sound.
A similar problem I'm having. Crash-wise, i just bought a Zildjian A Custom 17" Projection Crash to complement a 16" Dark K and an 18" Medium A. I'm finding the 17" and 18" very similar, although the 17" is very slightly lower (due to it being a projection crash). What would you do? I was thinking of trying to take back the 17" and changing it for an 18" version ... or perhaps changing to an A custom medium crash.
bobby__johnny

Projection crashes are medium thin, so they're thinner than the A Medium Crash. I tend to find the A's brighter than the A Customs. Nonetheless I'm thinking of exchanging the 17" A Custom - what would be the best bet.

I liked it in the store and it had a different decay. But now I am wondering if I should move that Projection over and add one more cymbal such as another 18" A CUSTOM or maybe a 19".
What would be your take on keeping the two main crashes identical or adding that third crash resulting in three slightly different ones/sounds...?

Why stick with Zildjian? What if the sound you are looking for is in a Sabian, Paiste, Ufip, Meinl, Wuhan, Istanbul Agop, Istanbul Mehment, Turkish, or Bosphorous line?
Seriously, you're being VERY narrowminded here.
Anyway, for metal, I would suggest A Medium to Rock Crashes, probably 17-20" in size. But if you want to get cheaper cymbals, I would go for the AA Medium to Rock crashes, 17-20", but since you seem to ONLY want Zildjian, go for it.
Or if you want really heavy, get some Paiste 2002 crashes. Oh wait, no, you don't want the best, you just want the name, never mind.

No. Which is why it shouldn't matter to you either. Self-pwn. :p
Oh, and since you're provoking argument, many of todays top manufacturers evolved from Zildjian, and since evolution is progress, in theory Sabian is better than Zildjian! How d'you like them apples?
(It's alright, I'm just messing :D)
Anyway, since you asked, I think you should just try out any and all Zildjians you can, but since you hit hard, A's and Z's would be your best bet, larger sizes, i.e. 16" minimum.

Anyone have an opinion about the 14' K/Z special hats? I've been looking at them because I tried a pair of brilliant finish 13' new beats, which were too bright and trebly for me, they almost drown out my snare. The K/Z's seem to be a lot darker, i want something dark and with a wash that isn't too loud. I'm open to other brands as well.
Oh and i'll probably sound like a brand whore here, but opinions on getting a 17' K custom dark crash as the main and a 19' Avedish Thin crash? I like my cymbals big and pretty low pitched but not too loud, was thinking about the A custom projections but they sound like they'll be too loud.
P.s. the only reason I'm going for zildjians is because most music stores in my country stock mainly zildjians, and i can usually get a bit of a discount on them.

Hey guys, could you suggest a China cymbal that will go well with my current cymbals? I really don't have a limit to my budget for this cymbal. Also, I perfer Zildjian cymbals but I'll try anything that you guys think will go well.

14" A Custom Mastersound Hats
16" A Custom Projection Crash
18" Z Custom Medium Crash
20" A Custom Ping Ride

A Custom China 18", or an Oriental China trash of the same size. other sizes could work as well, but the 18" size is the most versatile.

14" AA Regular hats are a good choice for just about everything...a little darker, try the 14" HHX Groove hats. nice simmer....most likely the next addition to my kit is those hats.

All right, this is a big job.
I want a sound of classic metal-kinda progish but I still want the cymbals to be applicable to other times of music. I don't care about a budget. The set up would be:
Hi-Hats
Ride
Crash 1
Crash 2
Crash 3
Effects 1
Effects 2
Effects 3
Effects Ride 4
I would like it one step up with only Zildjian and another with all Sabian. (So I can choose and pick from these companies. Don't give any Wuhan, paiste or any others; I just want a Zildjian setup or a Sabian.)
As in, here are the cymbals you'd want from Zildjian, and here is the kind you would like from Sabian.

The 8" Stagg SH splash is quite nice, although it's got a bit much sustain for my tastes. Gotta love the Sabian AAX 8" splash for really short cutting sounds, I find it a great accent cymbal

Whats the different sound characteristics of a flat ride compared to a normal bell ride? I heard a flat ride once and it sounded good, so I am curious.
bobby__johnny
04-07-2005, 10:26 AM
they are much dryer and crisper sounding. The bell is what gives a cymbal its overtones and volume. thats why Dry rides gennerally have small bells, and why flat rides never project as much as the same ride with a bell.

This is not always true. I have a 14 in k custom fast crash and for a 14 in and a fast crash, it is not that splashy, it still has a full tone.
Hey guys, I'm looking for a ride that would be suitable for metal (power/thrash), I'm open minded about whether Zildjian/Paiste/Sabian/etc. I'd prefer a loud bell, and it needs to be heard through guitars.
I've been considering: Paiste Rude Power Ride, Zildjian Z Custom Ride, and maybe a Paiste Dimensions Ride of some sort, any comments or advice appreciated, thanks.
