Yo, I think I'm getting a new cymbal off my mate, who's got an HH or HHX (he doesn't know, because the markings have been taken off) but he does know it's a Sabian HH or HHX 16" crash. I can either get it for $80AU, or probably for free if I give him my xbox and games (which I never use). Deal? Methinksso.
He says it projects insanely good, very loud.
Oh, and he also says it's very thick. Any ideas what it could be?
Plan B.

I'd put money on HHX if it's got da projectione!

I LOVE the Stage Hats. I play rock and they sound great wide open. Awesome sound half-open and closed too. Closed with some shoulder is great. Closed using the tip is great too, really nice and articulate.
Only thing about the Stage Hats that I can do without is the fact that the sound can get "tinny" if they're opened too wide. Maybe it's because they're so bright and all bright hats might do that but just for that reason, I try not to open them past a certain point. Still, that point is a little further than what is necessary for most situations anyway.
I don't really like the AA Regular Hats. The Stage Hats are the AAX equivalent of the AA Regular hats. In my opinion, the AA Regulars are just too bland. The Stages have more "life" to them.
There are numerous people on these boards who are very satisfied with their Stage Hats. Honestly, I can't really think of anyone here who has the AA Regular hats and/or actually likes them.
As for the Vaults, I'd say the AA Regulars are better than the Vaults. I really don't care for the Vaults that much. They have this "cheap" sound to them, as if they're more towards beginner cymbals than professional cymbals. AA regulars, while being a bit bland, still sound professional.
You really should try these out for yourself again. Put them side by side and listen to each one. Try all the possibilities, wide open, half-open, closed with shoulder, closed with tip, hi-hat chicks, splashes, etc... You're the one who's gonna have to listen to them daily and it's really important to get what you like the best.

Try the Paragons.
And that crash is definitely an HH. HHs tend to be much thicker, while HHXs tend to be very thin.

Ok thanks Coca for all the info. This is actually really sweet because the only music store in town that sells decent hats has the AAX stage hats on sale i think, plus they've got god knows how many pairs. I tried them out a while ago and compared them to the vaults (the Vaults were blown outta the water). But i could try out all of the possiblilities because they had this weird clutch that u could only change how far the hats were opened with a drum key (which i was without), so this week im gonna go in with a key for another go and try all the possibilities.
thanks a lot man.

Hats, crash(es), and ride(s).
Other cymbals optional and secondary (if they fit with the style o' music).
Extremely bright.
Think dance music.
Packs are fine as are individual cymbals.
Brand mixing = totally cool.
Preferably not pieces of crap, but I figure that's a given.
Just thinking for now, the actual purchase is a good ways off.

I can understand this response to my posts where I just reply with "New Beats" but we were on the subject of Platinum Zildjians, and I talked about my experience with them, that experience being me playing on my school's set of New Beats, and because I loved those cymbals so much I, in turn, loved them in general.

My current set up is a paragon set (14" hats/ 16" crash/ 22" ride) and a crappy 12" wuhan splash lol. Ok, a random question. I purchased an 18'' Meinl Classic China Cymbal. It sounds terrible. Is there a certain way to play a china cymbal, or a certain way to mount it on the stand. Or is it just a terrible cymbal in general!
drummguy731
12-09-2006, 05:03 PM
I'd play it inverted, with the "Bottom" side, the side without the type of cymbal labeled on it, up. The "bell" of the china facing down, that's how I've always played 'em. I've heard a uninverted china before and I hated it
Inkstar
12-09-2006, 06:34 PM
Yeah most drummers play China's inverted, I believe that's how they're meant to be played.
It's hard with Wuhan though, cause the bell actually like sticks out so far, so when you mount it inverted it's really wobbly and hard to put the wingnut down without scratched the inside of the bell.. anyone got a solution?
drummguy731
12-09-2006, 06:37 PM
umm, on top of the tama roadpro stands, the nut that's on the stand is no bigger in diameter than the felt, that should fit into the bell quite nicely

jred you shouldve played the china before you bought it.
I was actually in a pub in my local town, and there was a Megadeth Tribute band playing. I noticed that his china sounded awesome so I wen't up and took a look, it was the Meinl Classic 18'' China. I listened to it on Meinl's website just to double check, and it sounded alike the one I had heard in the pub so I purchased one off e-bay. Brand new for £91 (I am told this is a good price) Thanks for the advice everyone. I have noticed alot of bands on TV tend to have there china cymbal either mounted on there right, with a rather steep angle on it. Or... They have a boom stand sticking out at a right angle and mount it in the upside-down stand. I may try this with mine.
Edit: This Is the way I play it, and how it is now mounted. This seems to get the best sound out of the China. Just to let you guys know, It may be worth trying yours like that (If you have one)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y243/LarsAgi007/ward43140.jpg
Also, I have just got myself a bargain! I have just paid £149 for...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y243/LarsAgi007/15d2_1.jpg
They are as follows:
Meinl Classic: 20'' Flat Ride (Normally approx £140)
Meinl Classic: 17'' Medium Crash (Normally approx £110)
Meinl Classic: 14'' Hi-Hats (Normally Approx £140)
That approx prices were how much the cymbals above were in two of my local drum stores. So for £149 I think they are pretty much a bargain. My current hats I am using are Zildjian ZBT's, Would you say these Meinl Classic: 14'' Hi-Hats Will create a better sound? As I am either selling the Meinl Hats or Zildjian Hats, for the obvious reason of needing only 1 pair of hats!
I am going to pay the guy for the cymbals on the 29th December (Payday) So if the Meinls are better I can sell my zildjians nearer to the time.
So My kit's cymbal specs (Options) are now:
Meinl Classic: 20'' Flat Ride
Meinl Classic: 14'' Medium Crash
Meinl Classic: 17'' Medium Crash
Meinl Classic: 14'' Hi-Hats
Meinl Classic: 10'' Splash
Meinl Classic: 12'' Splash
Meinl Classic: 18'' China
Paiste 101: 12'' Splash
Paiste 101: 14'' Crash
Paiste 101: 16'' Crash
Paiste 101: 18'' Crash/Ride
Zildjian ZBT: 14'' Hi-Hats
Stagg: 8'' Mini Splash
Stagg: 10'' Mini China
So when I get my new cymbals through, its a case of seeing which are my favourites, what cymbals I need and where. And then sell any unwanted/Un-Needed cymbals on E-Bay!

Yes, it is one of my lower line boom stands. I am going to need 7 more Boom Stands to mount my new cymbals on. I have a connection who does me quality gear at a good price. I asked him how much he can do me 7 Solid Boom stands for. He said:
7 Mapex pro Boom Stands £120
7 Stagg Boom Stands £60 (They are thicker than the Mapex)
I think I will go with the Mapex though. Obviously thickness isn't everything. Look at a section of your boom stand, and compare it to a section of a coke can. The can may be thicker, the boom stand is alot stronger.

they are great cymbals for the price but you can get better
Surely I could get better ones but what about in that price range and suited for pop music? 300-400 euros, not more.
(Ive found a XS20 set which includes crash 16, crash 18, ride 20 and hihat 14 for 350 euros, its somewhat a bargain!).

Any thoughts on what cymbals are the most complex?
Also I heard that some drummers back in the day used to bury their cymbals for a week or two when they bought them new, to age them? How does it affect the sound?
Zildjian

I think K hybrids are the most complex. When you hit them there bright and loud, then the overtones are dark. ITs an amaizing cymbal
And I dont know about burying cymbals. Id try it but its snowing and I dont have a coat :/

Burying cymbals would only make a difference if you buried them for at least 6 months, at the very least.
In short, it's not worth it.

That's just like when drummers take sand paper to brand new coated heads, it'll make it sound a little more aged, but definately not as much as playing them to get them aged

Has anyone heard the new Meinl MCS series. They currently only have 3 cymbals in that series. Which can only be obtained in there box set.
I have been offered a Meinl MCS 20'' ride for £60 from one of my e-bay sellers. He recently sold me a Meinl Classic 18'' China. He said he is getting new cymbals for christmas and will no longer need it. Apparantly he has not used it as he has a Meinl Classic Flat ride 20'' also. In which is not for sale.
I have listened the the Meinl MCS 20'' Ride on the Meinl website. It sounds pingy with medium sustain. It sound quite heavy also. But they don't always sound as they do on the website. I know its made from B8 alloy also.
Any thoughts or opinions on this will be much appreciated.
This is the description of the MCS series box.
The new MCS CYMBAL SET-UP contains a 14" medium hihat, a 16" medium crash and a 20" medium ride. All specially harmonically matched for the most musical sound. Ready to rock right out of the box.

Hey there...
I found a GREAT deal on a paiste 20" dry ride, and I'm wondering if there are any opinions on it here. I've heard some sound clips and I've read some reviews, and I'm worried it's a little too pingy for my taste. Anyone have first-hand experience with it? I like stick definition, but not like you're hitting an anvil. A nice balance with a lean towards ping would be ideal. Anyway, should I go for it? I can pick it up for 130, it's 340 on musiciansfriend.

yes, physically you could
but if you want the right cymbal for jazz, you won't buy a ping ride
and obviously saying you caould play jazz on a ping ride you havent studied or listened that much to jazz
for jazz, light rides, with medium to high wash are prefered, and often these rides are riveted for a kind of sizzle sound
none of the qualities of a ping ride

it's decent if you're doin' just metal, but the constant pingyness gets a bit annoying IMO

True dat, for sure. I'm not a fan of the AA Metal-x. Although something I have noticed, and this goes for Z customs too, is that the rides are defientely the most tolerable for me.

what's your guys' opinion on the 6.5" zil bell? I want a seperate bell that's high pitched, loud, but not too loud as so to pierce your ears. My sweet ride's bell just doesn't cut it...

Should be about perfect.
Its high pitched and cutting enough to be heard.

I have 20" Medium Crash and it takes abit to get going. Probably more of a ride weight tbh. 18" and under mediums are great weight for rock and heavy music.

my other crash is an 18" 2002 Crash, and I did have a 14" Agop crash but I sold that.
If you are used to playing on thins like me when I bought this cymbal, it'll seem heavy at first, but you'll get used to it.

Sorry, I don't play with aheads and 6' high crashes like you Coca.
LOL what a blind assumption. I don't play with Aheads and my crashes aren't 6' high. You're an idiot.
To really open up a 20" medium crash you need to do something called a fullstroke. Take the time and learn it someday.
Remember, "fullstroke."
