steam and hl-2 issues

rawr, lately it seems as if all my games are crashing but whatever. my problem now is that i paid 49 bucks for a downloadable version of hl2. it downloaded the game fine, but when i select it from my steam menu, it stalls at the loading screen and needs to be manually rebooted. i know a lot of people have had this problem. i'm just wondering if it's an issue with the software, my video card, or does steam just suck?

I downloaded the hl2 demo yesterday and it worked fine...

i actually got it to work. sweeet. it was a bitch though, i left the game at the loading screen for like an hour and when i got back the game started up. now it just takes like five min to load, much better than an hour. unfortunately though its still kinda buggy, but as long as it runs i can play 'til the update.
