He only uses like three pedals. His rig set-up is in the Guitar World with Phish's guitarist on the cover (sorry I can't remember his name). I think they are tremolo, flanger (or phase), and delay.

Vietnow or Killing In The Name would be easiest guitar wise methinks.
Dr. Jake Destructo
06-01-2005, 12:07 AM
I recorded the 1st half of KitN today. Everything up until the solo, to be exact. It was a good 1st take, but the tone was wayyyy off, so it'll take me a while to tinker with that. Who's gonna do the guitar on Vietnow?
Mambuto_O'Mally
06-01-2005, 08:35 AM
I was planning to. Anyway I won't be on for a while. Not till like 9 (CST). I pan recording tomorrow or Friday. IT WILL BE DONE BY SATURDAY.
Mambuto_O'Mally
06-01-2005, 12:52 PM
So who is planning on doing the other instruments for Vietnow?
Duncster
06-01-2005, 04:22 PM
I'm pretty much ready to do the bass, although I'm going to find it extremely hard to do justice to Tim's distortion/tone with my Squire and Digitech BP200. I'll do bass for any song wanted, but if anyone else wants a shot that cool.
I'll be very happy if you let me play bass. :thumb:
Darkness
06-01-2005, 04:26 PM
You both could probably play on a track. Right now theres 3 songs going on = Bulls, Killing, and Vietnow
Out of those I would like to play on Killing in the Name the most, but I'll take anything.
Darkness
06-01-2005, 04:41 PM

Who's doing what on Vietnow again? I'd like the drum part (if possible) so I can listen to it while recording, but if I can't whatever. I got everything lined up and I will edit my part the best I can, but it won't be as good quality as I wanted because my jack broke so I have to do the recording through my mic. But, eh, thats life.
Dr. Jake Destructo
06-05-2005, 01:44 PM
Demon Hunter recorded KitN and BoP last night on drums. He was going to send them to me, but I never got online. :p Oops. Anyways, just giving you guys a little update.

Darkness

Yeah ok. Still waiting for bass n drums...
Dr. Jake Destructo
06-05-2005, 05:18 PM
Sweet. Now all I need is a tone that sounds something even remotely close to Morello's. :p I just recorded Killing in the Name, and everything went off fine, but I played it back, and the tone is so horrendously off it's not even funny. (Ok, yeah, maybe a little.) What settings are you using on your RP, DoG?
Darkness
06-05-2005, 05:23 PM
Not using my RP, I don't use it anymore. It doesn't work well with my B.C rich, I get a loud feedback on a lot of effects and the tone always sounds way to digital.
As for amp settings, I was told Morello uses
bass-5
middle-7
treble-8
But someone in this thread said something waaaay different. I'm going to try both though.
Dr. Jake Destructo
06-05-2005, 05:27 PM
I think I need to bump up the treble. The riff when my tone sounds the worst is the intro riff where he hits 3 open D's then scales up 2 octaves. Meh, I'll figure it out.
Darkness
06-05-2005, 05:34 PM
That'd be cool man, but if you can't find any don't worry about it.

Try:
Gain - 6/7
Treble - 5/6
Mid - 4/5
Bass - 5/6
Reverb - 2
Using the neck pickup.
He favours Marshalls, recnetly the JCM800, so any British high-gain amp models should do you well.

Dude... its an audacity file. Convert to MP3...
http://www.audacity.sourceforge.net
It's worth the 3 mb download. :p
Dammit...Demon Hunter, you only sent the Project file. You need the data and everything else. Go back to the audacity website and download the LAME mp3 converter
http://www.webhostxpress.net/~mitiok/lame-3.96.1.zip
There's a link to the converter. It allows you to save files in Audacity in mp3 format. You can save them as WAV, but they are 6 times bigger than an mp3.
Also, I just recorded Killing in the Name, and it turned out good. I'm gonna double track it tomorrow. I also worked on the solo. I used the same tone, but with my whammy pedal. I sounds pretty good to me. The only thing I've having trouble with is the trem picking. :-/ Other than that, the song is as good as done. (For me at least.)
Metalhead-How are you gonna record? What kind of setup, that is. I have a computer mic, but I can actually procure surprisingly high quality from it.

617-You're doing bass on Killing in the Name, right? When are you going to be able to do that? What about vocals?
We could do this 2 ways-Now that I have the drum for Killing in the Name, I could start recording it, then upload it so that you could finish the song, or you could do the bass, send it to me, I could guitarize it, then you could record the vox.
You pick. :D
I can record bass tomorrow, then you can do guitar, then I'll do vocals. I'll have it ready by tomorrow night hopefully.

I've been thinking a lot recently about this whole cover deal, and I am going to request a change of plans...Can we do Bombtrack instead of KitN? I know Demon Hunter probably won't have any preference, but 617, would you mind?
Here are 2 reasons
1. From a cover standpoint, I personally could do a better job on Bombtrack because there is lots of room to improv, throughout the entire song. Covers are supposed to be orginal, right? (See Renegades)
2. I like playing Bombtrack more. :D
If you guys would rather do KitN, that's fine, but I'm just saying that Bombtrack would be funner for me. We do have more than a month to get this done, so we could do KitN later on down the road, but I'd prefer to do Bombtrack instead. Gimme some feedback guys.

I went to record BoP but I didn't. I realized I wasn't sure about a few things.
1) are we using flat tuning like the actual song is in? Probably an obvious question but I just wanted to make sure.
2) Do you want me to make up a new solo or just play it the same way Tim does?
3) Since Demon didn't use a metronome the drums speed up and slow down a bit and the guitar breaks are a bit to long. I was wondering if you wanted me to make a bassline to the song and have Demon play to that since the poor guy doesn't have a metronome to play to.
I'm also gonna record a rough version of Vietnow for Demon to follow!

Now everyone knows Killing in the Name, Guerilla Radio, Sleep Now in the Fire, but what do you believe to be some of Rage's most underrated songs? and why do you believe them to be underrated?
For me it would be:
Ashes in the Fall - The lyrics are amazing, the structure is very different from many of their songs, and Zack's whispers at the end are pretty eerie.
Darkness - most people haven't heard this one but its got a cool jazz pre-verse, spoken word elements, and an awesome melodic solo. Powerful song.
No Shelter - This was an Australia only bonus track for BOLA, got an awesome groove and some very cool lyrics.
Without a Face - Though its pretty run of the mill Rage material I really think it stands out on EE. Gotta love the live version too.
