Hey. For the record this is my first guitar review.

Epiphone G-400 Worn Cherry
Background: I play mostly rock and punk music. In my band I play stuff like Green Day before Nimrod, The Ramones, and AC/ DC. For fun just jamming and playing around I like to play Van Halen and some AC/ DC stuff. Basically I like to play Rock and Punk.

Looks: I have always wanted a Gibson SG. ALWAYS. Ever since I saw school of rock it is the only guitar I ever wanted. The only problem was that I had no job and the guitar was over a thousand dollars. So after getting a job and saving some money I picked up an Ephiphone G-400 off Musicians Friend. I love the worn cherry look so I paid the extra $50 for it. The finish is okay. The Gibson SG's are noticabely nicer, but the Epiphone SG looks good. I like it, but it is a tad light. Overall, it gives the guitar a nice worn red look and I love it.

Feel: I love it. The guitar body has a nice non-glossy yet not dry feel, which I love. It feels like perfectly sanded wood. The neck is thin and easy to slide my hand up and down. The strings are pretty close to the frets which makes it very easy to play. Overall, my Epiphone SG is easier to play when compared to the Gibson SGs I play at guitar center.

Sound: ****. The two Alnico V pickups give this guitar AMAZING sound. Far superior to my Squire Strat (but then again what isnt?). I have a Marshall solid state amp (with the fdd) and when it's plugged into that sucker I get the sound I've always wanted. I can play my favorite Ramones and Green Day power chord songs while still being able to crank out some AC/ DC, Strokes, and Queen solos (I'm not good enough yet for any other solos). When on clean, I can get a good acousticish sound, but it is still obvious it is a clean elecric guitar. However, I can still play Don't Cry and Pinball Wizard nicely and it sound outstanding.

Overall, this is a stupendous guitar for the price. Sure, you could get a Gibson SG for thousands of dollars, but I actually like my Epiphone SG better than the Gibsons and it's $400. This guitar is THE BEST bang for your buck new guitar.

dude its kinda hard to take you seriously when you say that youve ALWAYS wanted an SG ever since school of rock came out... because that movie was still in theaters just a few months ago. i wont even start on your horribly inaccurate comparison of the epiphone model to the gibson.

lol yea i thought the school of rock reference was slightly odd too... I've wanted an SG since i first heard sabbath and ac/dc meself. Still, Jack Black is the man!

What? I never saw an SG before school of rock. I saw the movie, then I wanted one. Is that too hard to comprehend?

DumbNDrummer- No, please do start on my "horibly innacurate comparison". I'd like to know how my OPINION is wrong.

Good review, I've got a black SG and it's a pretty sweet guitar. I just want to upgrade the pickups to something really nice.

I've also had huge problems with the volume knobs and input jacks all coming loose...

I own the same guitar (epi g-400 in black). I know what you mean about the jack and the knobs. It's an easy fix though. I just got some gibson knobs and tightened the jack with a socket. I like the pickups, but the bridge pickup sounds kinda muddy, a lot of bass.

Ah, come on, lay off him. School of Rock hasn't been in the pictures for somewhat over a year (in England anyway, in the U$, probably a lot longer...) and he saw Jack Black's SG on it, whats the problem?!?

On a side note, with the right customization, a slightly cheaper guitar can still sound professional, depending on your preferences, I know someone who prefers his Epiphone Explorer to a Gibson, because hes done so much to it (refret to a rediculously low action, change of pickups, rewired, changed machine heads etc etc etc, I loose track). It still sounds sweet through his JMC and it's his baby. And also that he wouldn't want to worry about dropping a 1 grand plus guitar....

you could try lowering that bridge pickup, that could help possibly
