Warning! Long read ahead!

I posted this in The Pit but they say I might get better advise here so here goes.

Ok, so I have a band (like who here doesn't?). So in my band there’s Danial the drummer, Justin a.k.a iamtheking the lead guitars, me a.k.a the pwner on bass and
there’s Raf on vocals/soon to be rhythm guitarist (explained later).
Ok, so we went to a battle of the bands. Our first live performance. Needless to say we lost but I don't
have a problem with that. Win some, lose some as I always. So, after the our performance, someone pulled Justin aside and said “Your band is pretty good but your vocal sucks.” Yes, I admit Raf sucks at singing. We were desperate for a singer.

So, after the whole episode, Raf wanted to learn the guitar. So, we thought it’ll be good to have a second guitarist. So, we went about teaching him and stuff. After about 2 months of learning by himself me lending my guitar, he can now play the riff of seven nation army, riff of smoke on water and intro of hallowed be thy name(plays it very slllooowly). Excuse me for my bluntness but this stuff are easy and he still makes mistakes. Not bragging or anything but in 2 months I could at least play a whole song. Raf always turns up late for band meetings or practice sessions and we always have to send someone to the arcade to look for him. We feel that he is not serious about the band whilst we are. He’s more interested in soccer. It’s not that we forbid him to do anything related to soccer but he would rather watch a football match then practice. I’m not saying I have no life other then a band but you have to know how to prioritize things. He doesn’t seem to be interested in the welfare of the band at all. We’re going to a band competition tomorrow just to watch and stuff. But does he want to go? No. I didn’t even bother asking why he doesn’t want to go.

Then this is the part where I need your advise. There’s this girl that wants to join our band. Thing is, she doesn’t know how to play anything. BUT, she seriously wants to learn. She’s willing to perform in front of hundreds. Not like Raf. She can help out with the high notes in songs. I always have dreamt of a melodic voice in a song then turned to a deep throaty voice. Like the likes of Linkin Park and Evanasence and some other ones. She’s a great artist, so she can help out in artwork for the album cover etc. I can tell she’s very serious about this. I’m telling myself to give Raf until March next year to improve on his vocals or he’s out and I take over lead vocals. If a girl were to join our band, our chances of getting a contract, winning competitions and getting recognized would soar.
People here are sick of seeing the normal all guy band. There’s nothing special anymore and breaking into the industry here is hard unless you got something special.

So, what should I do? If you were me, what would you do?

And no, there would be no pics?, , put it in her butt or anything like that in this thread or rep--

I'd say give the chick a shot, and actually tell raf to get his **** together or he's out.
Or put some flyers/posters out and see if you end up with someone who's already good at what you need them to do (vox or guitar).

Also, I'd say giving a totally smoking, airtight performance in a style that is at the same time familiar yet impossible to place would get you further than having a girl in the band... but that's just me, I'm probably wrong :) Just don't become a direct rip off Lacuna Coil or I'll have to come and bludgeon you with a tire iron. (see if you can get the girl to sing like Angela Gossow, problem solved!!!)

Ah, bands can cause so many problems. My advice? Well, it's simple.

Giving "Raf" until March would hamper the progress you undoubtedly hope to achieve with your band. You should explain this to him, that you aspire to higher goals, and he is effectively putting a halt to his progress. It would be in my most humblest of opinions to say that you should give him to the end of January to make his choice.

Concerning the girl, it sounds like she really wants to be in the group, and that you and the other members want her in. Having a member of the opposite sex is always good, as it gives a different perspective on your music. In another opinion of mine, it would be wise to bring her in now. You will have the added feminine vocals, and this will give you time to teach her how to play guitar (if that is what you are looking to do). If it shall be the case that Raf leaves the band, you'll automatically have another guitar player to fill his role. If he decides to stay, and get his act together of course, you'll just have another guitar player which wouldn't hurt, and you'll have the female vocals to add depth to your songs.

Ditto the guys above - grab the girl now before she changes her mind, it'll be worth it. Put her on vocals now, and tell Raf to really pull himself together guitar-wise. However! Make sure you're not only going for the chick because you want to put it in her. Have a talk to your bandmates and tell them not to try and put it in her either. I've heard many a horror story about chicks breaking up bands like that.
