Would this work?..

Instead of spending quite a bit on a soundcard with multiple inputs or a mixer, would it work to buy a few seperate soundcards with one or two inputs and do it that way?

With adobe audition you can set tracks to different soundcards ya see.

I guess the main problem is there is a limit to how many you can have in your computer. I think mine at the minute won't take as many as three..

Is there an addon for computers to allow you plug more soundcards etc. into it.

Ask me to explain if i havn't done so :p

I would just buy one good one. Not a few crappy ones.. the result wouldn't be as good! And yes you can add quite a few things into the computer.

M-audio has some pretty cheap soundcards with 2,4,6,8, or 10 inputs/outputs. Mine has 10 inputs and was only $300. Only problem is that you need a preamp for each channel. But you wouldn't want to use the cheap soundcards as preamps. That wouldn't sound too great.

They advertise lots of inputs, but they're usually a bunch of different types for hooking up with different mediums. Having, say, 10 XLR or 1/4" for $300 is a bargain I would sell my soul for.

the way to make the most of home recording is doing things individually. As lomng as you have a mixer to get your drums sorted, its always better to record one at a time and mix afterwards. Thats why soundcards never have that many inputs.
