One of the finest albums of the 90s, this is the perfect example of evolution
in a band. While retaining the style of their doom roots, Anathema have
managed to write hauntingly beautiful songs as they move into Pink-Floyd-ish
territory, while being the most melancholy Brits yet.
There are more layers to the sound now as opposed to Eternity
and the band just seems more confident, having moved completely out of the
shadow of Darren White. This is Anathema's finest hour among their other
fine hours. The Cavanagh brothers have written their most consistent
tunes here. The bass and drums are good, though nothing spectacular.
But the centerpiece is the songwriting, and the art of it.
This album should have broken them worldwide, as should have AFDTE.
One of the underrated masterpieces of the 90s.

Vinny Cavanagh's vocals are showcased as he
gives us his best vocal performance ever in One last goodbye, a
song reportedly about the brothers' recently deceased mother, a raw, despairing song where you can almost feel his loss. As with most Anathema songs, the guitar line is made of deceptively simple arpeggios.
The intro to this album, Deep remind you of the power of the band
to write accessible tunes while remaining gloomy. Its a strong start to the
album, and a sign of things to come, lyrically and musically
'All the things you give,
they're all you leave behind
within your mind'
Pitiless is the heavier side of despair and is one of the 'metal'
songs on this album (i'm reaching). The guitar work is wicked as it goes
on, in true minimalist(including solos) Danny Cavanagh manner.
Alcoholism is what they take on next with forgotten hopes,
which starts off with the very pink floyd-ish 'hey, you'. As the intro
starts, you almost expect a return to their doom roots till it breaks into
humming and acoustic strumming. Very British delivery.
'did i punish you for dreaming?'
The instrumental Destiny is deadflows right in. I'm even told
that Pitiless, Forgotten Hopes and Destiny is Dead were one song
that was split for listening purposes. Different sounds altogether though.
one last goodbye is one of the best anathema songs ever.
Beautiful is how you have to describe the next song, Make it right f.f.s
The acoustics, the keyboards all blend in for a fine song without a lyrical
chorus. i already talked about one last goodbye, which is to many their finest song. In parisienne moonlight, you have just got to love the way Vincent's voice sounds under the lovelyvoice of Lee Douglas as she sings over a simple piano line, later joined by strumming. This song is pretty and really does remind you of a reminiscing walk.
The title track, Judgement is another winner. As it turns into
a furious monster with distorted guitar jams and hurt-sounding vocals.
It then ebbs back into easier territory, sonically, with dont look too far
the Emotional Winter of sparse guitar solos kicks in. Remember Inner Silence? This is like a sequel to itl, with Lee returning after Parisien moonlight.
The despair turns to anger soon in the chorus
before getting angrier still with wings of god and settling down again
with anyone, anywhere which oozes with despair. It could have
been picked out of someone's livejournal though. It remains haunting
as he mourns for the loss of warmth in mankind, before the soothing
instrumentals of 2000 and gone.
I give this album a 4.5/5

It sounds like everything I would imagine an Anathema album to be.

Of the 4 songs I have heard - Deep, Parisienne Moonlight, Judgement, and Emotional Winter.. I don't get into Deep and Judgement all that much, the guy that first recommended them to me loves those songs, but I just fail to see what the attraction is. Emotional Winter and Parisienne Moonlight on the other hand are brilliant songs.

I'll surely be getting this album someday, maybe it will all fall into place then.
Thanks for the review

I heard some Anathema from looking at some from an old review and was unimpressed. Maybe I'll take another look.

I've heard a few songs from this record, and I like it. Very much like newer Katatonia.

One Last Goodbye is sex in song form. It's awesome. Absolutely awesome.

hey, I just made some brain connections today... what Pink Floyd stuff does this sound like, because I'd surely like to hear that? All I know is The Wall, which is not like this.
