View Full Version : New CD Reviews Section coming over X-mas
I have plans to develop this section of the forums into its own site (although it will still be integrated into the forums). This way we'll be able to have up-to date lists of reviews, cumulative ratings, top reviewers, etc, and showcase a few new cds each week. Currently the website is underdevelopment and is pretty large scale... think an mxtabs kind of thing for cd reviews. All your current reviews will be ported over to the new system.
This will probably come early January, just a heads up =)

Will there be room for multiple reviews of CD:s, so that more than one person can review a CD? In that case, that would be great.

so basically, this will make the need to call dibs obsolete as we can do multiple reviews of the same cd?
also, will we (or is it possible) to have like...a rating system like on mxtabs where the pepole can read the review and rate it, whether they be rating the review or the cd?
if that doesn't make sense, I apologize.......

It made perfect sense to me, and I was going to suggest doing something similar - allowing users of the new site to either vote on the review, vote on how good they feel the album is, or both. Something similar to RateYourMusic, I guess. Though both ideas have got problems, they'd be interesting.
And surely, dibs will only remain important if there's a 'Threadstarter', or some equivalent.
If it's like mxtabs, there might be problems. I'm just thinking that if someone reviews a CD by a really divisive band like Slipknot, and gives it 4/5 or something, then a whole load of idiots might disapprove the review simply for that, rather than if it's a decent review. I know that would happen with some of the reviews I've done.
Medopalis makes a good point.

I think to counter this, the current idea on mxtabs shoukld be employed, where you have to have done at least 3 tabs before you can rate/approve tabs. htis way you dont get idiots who have nothing better to do than give immature ratings and comments are stamped out, and honest reviewers get to have their say instead
And as long as reviews have to be approved before being posted, it should stop bad and pointless reviews too.
Other problems will occur, but these measures have worked well on mx tabs I find
Adam Jones is GOD makes a good counter-argument.

So what?
Under the new system, it wouldn't matter. If someone did it before you, all you'd have to do is step up and do it better, or do it your way, and bam, you still get to review it.
The current system only allows for 'reviews within reviews', and therefore, you only really get credit for writing the original. Under the new system it sounds like each review will be equal, just done by someone different. Therefore, there is no benefit of doing it first other than to say "omg I did it first"
....which was, basically, exactly what I was getting at.

90% Done
Bartender, this is very much a standalone thing, so its not a thread type atmosphere.
However, I'm still debating over whether comments will be allowed on individual reviews... it adds some important feedback, but it could be abused considerably.
As I have mentioned before, but just to be clear, all users will carry over to the new site, as well as all the moderators.
Some quick highlights of features:
1) Members have album playlists to showcase what they are currently listening to
2) Members have favorite band lists that show whether the band has been updated, etc. You can find other members with the same tastes
3) Members have favorite reviewer lists so they can check latest reviews
4) Sitewide album, band, and review charts to sort popularity.
5) Multiple sub genres, each with its own section
6) Feautured Reviews for every genre
7) Multiple reviews per album, sorted by mod recommendation and user vote on helpfullness of review.
8) Mods have full control over all reviews
9) Each band now has its own individual page, with band descriptions
10) Every album and every band is crosslinked to similar bands or albums. (Reviewers can do this via the submit form). An automatic system is also being considered.
11) Rating of most effective reviewers based on helpfullness of reviews and number of reviews submitted.
And more...
=)

So like, when is it going up?

10%'s time.
Not right now, it will work like the forums, with moderators controlling the reviews.
It doesn't look like mxtabs... it's a new site.

That isn't quite the answer I was hoping for.

I know :) I've no more specific information though, so just use your imagination, I suppose. Try and figure it out based on how long the 20% (from 70-90) took, if you've got time to spare.
Shadows

I don't think it would work. Since we don't know when exactly he started, there's no way to measure how long it took to get to the 70% mark.
I'd like to figure it out though.

To do the 20% between 70 and 90% it took 9 days, which means 4.5 days per 10%.
So 4.5 days from 1/7/05 is 1/11 - 1/12. Midweek.

Hooray for people like Humor.
Although I imagine it'd take a little longer. Testing, stuff like that. Though I may be wrong, since I've never made a site on that sort of scale.

I have to go back tomorrow too.
I haven't been going to bed till 2 or 3 AM...good thing my class doesn't start till 10 tomorrow instead of 9
I was meant to start at 6am. Didn't get in till 10.30. :)

I've just found out that with the exception of an exam tomorrow morning (which I found out about 10 minutes or so ago), I don't start Uni properly until the 24th. I do have a couple of essays and things (due in Wednesday/Thursday) to do too, though.
Pity about the links being disabled, but I guess it's smart... even if there were announcements regarding the bad links and those who were posting them.
I have a small question regarding the new site that anyone can answer, and plus, I'm kind of interested in everyone's answer:
Do we have to sign up for this new site? Assuming so, are you going to keep the same username you have with MX, or are you going to change your username?
I was meant to start at 6am. Didn't get in till 10.30. :)

As far as I know, we don't have to sign up separately for the new site. MX usernames will be able to post there.
Ah, alright, that's very handy. Thanks, Bartender.

I was working on the assumption that it would be locked and removed from sight, like the old Web Site/Music News one. I don't know, though.
^ That's what I would have assumed, as well... this new site will render everything on this forum obsolete because everything's going to be transferred over and it would make sense just to post new reviews on the new site, but again, that's just what I was assuming all along.

You're right...I've written a few reviews that wouldn't fit in one post and I would hate to have it cut in two. Goodbye Nymphetamine :upset:

I would have repped you, but I have to spread more rep around before giving it* to you.

I'll do everything I can to maintain the existing reviews, even comments if necessary. I havnt uploaded the existing stuff yet... thats the next and second to last step
The last step is of course closing this down and redirecting everyone to the new site.
I'm not going to give any concrete deadlines of when this will be done, but it's very close. The site functions fully right now, and is up on the internet =)
