Learn good basic chord progressions. Change chords once a line to begin with, then mess around if you don't like it. Doing it either way is accesible. Start simple when writing music to lyrics, make riffs later on.

Any chords. I write using E, A, and D position bar chords usually.

another tip that ive found useful, is to write some general music(dont get too specialized with riffs, ect) then just hum what you think you would want for vocals. then you can make up the words after. the words usually are harder to come up with this way though, so its all preference.

Sing your lyrics first, work out what tune would go with them, and then harmonise chords around that melody. I generally find that the music I produce that way is more complex and nuanced than if I write the music first and then put words to it. The ability to sing acappella and sound as good as you would without any backing is a very usefull skill to learn, for several reasons.
