Heres mine:
1. Brand New-Deja Entendu: What can I say about the way this albums lyrics make me feel. I think my favorite lyric has to be in "Okay, I believe you, But my Tommy Gun don't" ,"Ask Me what its like to have my self so figured out, I wish I knew".
2. Bright Eyes-Lifted or the Story is in the soil, keep your ears to the ground: This CD's lyric are so amazing and catchy that sometimes instead of my hearing the melodies in my head, I simply hear Oberst's amazing phrases. Listen to "Lover I don't have to Love" and "Bowl of Oranges"
3. Cursive-The Ugly Organ: This is a semi-story album, what makes the lyrics good is Tim's albilities to paint complex emotions with his lyrics.
4. Incubus-Morning View: Make Yourself might be their best album ever, but Morning is definitely Brandons highest point.
5. Muse-Showbiz: One of my friends burned me a copy of Absolution, and since then, I've soaked up everything Muse related around me. I have to say they are one of the most amazing live bands Ive ever seen and really down to earth guys. "Muscle Museum" and "Sunburn" are the best songs, mainly how well the lyrics in "Muscle Musuem" fit with the bleek textures.
6. Saves The Day-I'm Sorry I'm Leaving: Saves The Days odd acoustic may be poorly recorded, but the songs are very good. During "Jesse and My Whetstone" Chris mutters "Is it me or is it me, who can't see silver linings", and I am hooked.
7. Thrice-The Illusion of Safety/Artist in the Ambulence: I couldn't decide which CD I liked better. In IOS "Deadbolt" is my fav with "The water is poison, come on and give me my poison". While on AITA I have always had a soft spot for the opener "Cold Cash and Colder Hearts", "DIfferant God, Darker Skin, they are just not a burden that we like to bear".
8. Thursday-Full Collapse: Just a very good CD, nuff said. Geoff is an awesome writer.
9. The Smiths-Anything: Its Morrissey man, M-o-r-r-i-s-s-e-y.
10. Glassjaw-Worship and Tribute: I just got this CD, and its quickly becoming I favorite of mine. I'm gonna go pick the older CD and the Head Automatica CD as soon as I get a chance as well.

9. The Smiths-Anything: Its Morrisey man, M-o-r-r-i-s-e-y.
:chug:
I can't come up with 10 different artists, so I'll do a few from the same bands.
10. The Beatles - Abbey Road. This album is often lauded for its musical accomplishments, but it also has some stellar lyrical merits as well. John Lennon is recognized as a deeper, more philosophical writer than Paul McCartney (read: better), but they both have strong points. Two examples of excellent writing:
- Come Together: it makes no sense, seriously. But it sounds really cool anyways.
Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please
- The End: this is a McCartney one... it's simple, but it has a point to prove.
And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make
9. The Beatles - Let it Be. Any album with the song Let it Be on it has to be mentioned... one of the simplest songs lyrically, but it pours out emotion. Also features another great Lennon song, "Across the Universe".
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Everyone knows these lyrics, and... they are excellent.
8. John Mayer - Room for Squares. I'm not going to pretend that he's a lyrical genius or anything, but he has alot of really interesting lyrics. Simple, but they convey real things. Make fun of me all you want, but I have a soft spot for him.
- "My Stupid Mouth"
We bit our lips
She looked out the window
Rolling tiny balls of napkin paper
I played a quick game of chess with the salt and pepper shaker
That's just cool.
7. Coldplay - Parachutes. This is another album... I'm not going to pretend that Chris Martin is ... Morrissey or anything (;)), but he has some interesting lyrics.
I never meant to cause you trouble,
And I never meant to do you wrong,
And i, well if I ever caused you trouble,
Oh no, I never meant to do you harm.
Simple, simple writing, but there is so much emotion in the lyrics.
6. Brand New - Deja Entendu. I'm not really into modern music as much as I should be... I like a few bands here and there, but not much. But then I heard this album - and it proved to me that songwriting is not a dead artform. Jesse Lacey has a good lyrical head on his shoulders... he will go far.
and the way you always criticize the Smiths... and Morrissey (not from this album, but I had to include it ;)).
Oh, we're so c-c-c-c-c-controversial.
we are entirely smooth.
we admit to the truth,
we are the best at what we do.
and these are the words you wish you wrote down.
this is the way you wish your voice sounds,
handsome and smart.
oh my tongue's the only muscle on my body
that works harder than my heart.
This stanza reeks of Mozza influence... AND I LIKE IT.
5. Morrissey - You are the Quarry. Ok, the guy is 45 now. You think he could have lost his touch... but he hasn't. He's still the same old witty, miserable mope we have come to know and love.
I'll cite a song title, that should be quite enough: "How Could Anybody Think They Know How I Feel?" - yes, this is Mozza.
4. Morrissey - Viva Hate. I could put any Morrissey album here, but I had to go with this one. It has so many brilliant tracks and lyrics... case in point: "Late Night, Maudlin Street".
Oh, the last bus I missed to Maudlin Street
So he drove me home in the Van
Complaining, "Women only like me for my mind..."...any other lines would do, though.
3. the Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come. Every song on the album (save the dreadful "Death at One's Elbow") is a brilliant song lyrically.
- Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
I was delayed, I was way-laid
An emergency stop
I smelt the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar
And the pain was enough to make
A shy, bald, buddhist reflect
And plan a mass murder
Who said lied I'd to her ?
Oh, who said I'd lied because I never ? I never !
Who said I'd lied because I never ?
Arrgh that is too freaking good.
2. The Smiths - The Smiths. Wow. Too many lyrics to put here. This was the album which introduced the world to the Smiths... I would quote every song, but I'll leave you with one of my favourite Smiths quotes ever.
- Reel around the Fountain
I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said
Two lumps, please
You're the bee's knees
But so am I
That is just freaking good.
1. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead. Perhaps my favourite album of all time... how could you not include an album with "Frankly, Mr. Shankly", "the Queen is Dead", "There is a Light That Never Goes Out"... and many other brilliant tracks?? This is just superb. I'll leave a few brilliant quotes to end this post.
- The Queen is Dead
She said : I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"
- Frankly, Mr. Shankly
Oh, I didn't realise that you wrote poetry
I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry, Mr. Shankly
- I Know its Over
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
- Cemetry Gates
If you must write prose and poems
The word you use should be your own
(if you know anything about Mozza's lyrics, this is hilarious)
- Bigmouth Strikes Again
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her Walkman started to melt
He updated it with 'Ipod' in concert :)
- There is A Light...
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
*sigh*

Not in any particular order...
10.) The Smiths - The Queen is Dead. I grew up listening to The Smiths and The Cure. They still haven't worn off. Moz's rhyming of "gates" and "Yeats" still gets me.
9.) The Postal Service - Give Up. Ben Gibbard can be one of the best songwriters in the indie world when he wants to. It was hard chosing this one-shot deal over his Death Cab for Cutie work but if you listen to this album and his spot on Dntel's "(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan," you should at least kind of appreciate his craft. Ben can get a bit over-the-top with his romanticism but this album just does it.
8.) Third Eye Blind - S/T. They've gone downhill exponentially since this album but it was a doozey. Anyone who can write a song as catchy as "Semi-Charmed Life" and have most people not be aware of how it's about being a drug addict is good in my book. The last three songs on the album are a musical triptych of lovesick abandonment.
7.) Weezer - The Blue Album. Weezer is Weezer.
6.) Weezer - Pinkerton. Weezer is Weerez.
5.) Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary. Desert island cd. My brother and I have been into this band from the start. The Fire Theft is sort of a disappointment, though.
4.) At The Drive-In - Vaya. Cedric is insane. Absolutely insane
3.) Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica. Isaac's voice is an acquired taste. He has skill as a songwriter despite his yahoo vocal style. Good stuff.
2.) The Wrens - Meadowlands. "She Sends Kisses" is one of the best songs that I've ever heard. Seriously. More people need to listen to this band.
1.) Jimmy Eat World - Clarity. This is a desert island album for me. I've had this cd for years now and I still pop it in when I need some inspiration and the crack isn't doing anything. Adkins seems to have gotten overly simplistic and rhyme-happy lately but this album... More people need to hear it.
Honourable Mentions:
John Mayer's Inside Wants Out on the strength of "Comfortable" alone.
Brand New's Deja Entendu because everyone else likes it and "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot" and "Play Crack the Sky" are ace.
AFI's Sing the Sorrow because I love their stuff with Jade Puget and while "God Called In Sick Today" isn't on it this is a good, dark album.

I used to love Third Eye Blind when I was in like 4th and 5th grade, then I stopped listening to them because I didn't realize what their songs were about, and I thought they were too upbeat.... stuped me!

John Mayer- Room for Squares...I love the way his lyrics can be so conversational and blunt
Sigur Ros- ( )...Let me explain, I think it's incredible the way that 'You sigh alone' can be made to sound so beautiful in so many different ways
Damien Rice- O.....a true example of music being poetry
The Mars Volta- Deloused in the Comatorium.......so strange, but so interesting
Simon and Garfunkel- Bridge Over Troubled Water....maybe not the most amazing lyrics, but the articulation of certain lyrics in this album just floor me
Ben Harper- Welcome to the Cruel World.....again, a musical poet
Jack Johnson- Brushfire Fairytales........the lyrics in this are so chilled and simplistic
I will edit with more later, when I can think properly.

1. The Holy Bible, Manic Street Preachers
Faster
I am an architect, they call me a butcher
I am a pioneer, they call me primitive
I am purity, they call me perverted
Holding you but I only miss these things when they leave
I am stronger than Mensa, Miller and Mailer
I spat out Plath and Pinter
She Is Suffering
Beauty she is scarred into man's soul
A flower attracting lust, vice and sin
A vine that can strangle life from a tree
Carrion, surrounding, picking on leaves
Archives of Pain
I want to walk in the snow
And not leave a footprint
I want to walk in the snow
And not soil its purity
It's a bleak album, but a darn good one.

no real order here, just giving a few examples per cd too
Bright Eyes - Fevers And Mirrors
Padriac My Prince
Padriac my prince,
I've all but died from the sheer weight of my shame,
You cried but no one came,
And the water filled your tiny lungs.
Appear my dear and cry for me six years ago today,
When I layed you in your grave.
Your sweet young skin was shining then too.
Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon
The Shower Scene
Its time for you to choose,
The bullet or the chapstick,
But you are far too cute,
Or whatever he said.
Seventy Times 7
Have another drink and drive yourself home,
I hope there's ice on all the roads.
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt,
And again when your head goes through the windshield.
Sparta - Porcelain
End Moraine
This is your history.
You made what you will be.
Facts are of no concern,
They upset your story.
The past is what we learn,
It upholds your glory,
Revisionist history.
Atreyu - Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses
Aint Love Grand
You would rather bleed than be without her,
Gone are those tender whipsers dancing in your ear.
Replaced with lackluster memories you cry,
Your screams play in your empty room.
Tulips Are Better
Let me be captivated, by your beauty.
Then let me fall from your grace, unto my broken knees.
Close my eyes so tightly, the tears are welling up.
You aren't worth the waste, of the salt or the water.
Dialated
If you blink you could miss so much,
Please don't ever close your eyes.

obviously you must think im some sort of genious kid or something
i dont listen to stuff chock full of metaphors... i listen to things that have well put together songs with meanings that dont come to the surface right away (unlike RAH I HATE YOU RAH)
also i find music that is sometimes soothing to be good too, although i listen to tons of stuff, not just straight heavy/emo/melodic

Great Thread.
1.) AFI - The Art of Drowning
Davey for me paints the most detailed picture with his lyrics.
2.) From Autumn To Ashes - Too Bad You're Beautiful
The dynamics of the two singers further the lyrical value.
3.) AFI - Sing The Sorrow
See other AFI.
4.) Subhumans - The Day The Country Died
Best political band period in my opinion.
5.) Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters/In God We Trust Inc.
Kings of satirical lyrics.
6.) AFI - Black Sails In The Sunset
See first AFI.
7.) Green Day - American Idiot
Face it, the lyrics are maturing quite a lot for this band.
8.) Social Distortion - S/T
Story of My Life, trying not to sound cliche, speaks to me. Other songs on there are genious too.
9.) Bad Brains - S/T
Never before has singing positively about religion been so cool.
10.) Circle Jerks - Group Sex
Select lyrics are the funniest I've heard. Good for a laugh.

10. Alkaline Trio - From Here To Infirmary/Goddammit - Matt Skiba is such a brilliant writer - dark, twisted and bloody funny in places.
9. Green Day - Nimrod - I'll stand by this, if needs be. This was Billie Joe's finest moment - he's a better writer than he gets credit for...
8. Weezer - Pinkerton - 'nuff said.
7. Funeral For a Friend - Casually Dressed and Deep In Conversation - Very good emo band, even if they are Welsh.
6. The Ataris - So Long, Astoria - Tough to pick any one album out from these, but this is probably the most mature, so gets the nod.
5. Brand New - Deja Entendu - Jesse Lacey is the best thing to happen to emo for a while.
4. Jimmy Eat World - Static Prevails - Not quite as good as Clarity, but a bloody strong album, IMHO.
3. Something Corporate - Songs for Silent Movies - Why? Konstantine.
2. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead - Bitter, funny and just plain bloody good.
1. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity - If there's a better album lyrically than this, I don't want to know about it. Adkins is a god in my eyes.

Taking Back Sunday - Tell All your Friends (Lazarra is awesome)
You had a good list there was just one thing I had to add. The first TBS album If I remember correctly (this may be incorrect) was actually almost all written by John Nolan (Former TBS guitarest, now of straylight run), Jesse Laceys BF.

Even if Lazarra didn't write it, he makes up for it in the vocals.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness/Siamese Dream
To be honest i could have put all Pumpkins albums down, BC is god, can't wait for his solo album.
Nirvana - Nevermind/In Utero
Whatever anyone says about Kurt not being able to sing, his lyrics were still flawless, being brutal and poetic at the same time.
Weezer - Maladriot
Ok i'm probably gonna get flamed for picking this album over any other Weezer album, but i just prefer this to the rest, a pure pop-rock masterpiece.
Metallica - Metallica (Black Album)
Apart from being the defining album of it's era, there's not much more to say.
Radiohead - The Bends/OK Computer
The lyrical genius that is Thom Yorke, produced what are possibly the two of the best alternative albums ever.
The Pixies - Doolittle/Surfer Rosa
Again possibly two of the best alternative albums ever.
The Used - The Used
The Mars Volta - De-loused In The Comatourium
Thrice - The Artist In The Ambulance.

Man, I would expect better choices in the songwriting and lyrics forum... but ok, for right now I will post a few bands, then come back and give certain albums.
Tool and APC (same writer)
Death
Rush
The Doors
The Berzerker (yes, the lyrics talk about how there's nothing wrong with cannabalism and about the proces of embalming, but they are amazing nonetheless)
Cradle of Filth

Im a big Tool fan but i didn't put them down seeing as they have the same writer, but looking back now Tool lyrics are probably better.
And im not the biggest CoF fan but i listen to them now and again and Dani is a very good lyricist, but maybe they get overlooked because they can be hard to hear on the majority of songs.

Staind-break the cycle: the lyrics arent the best but for some reason i heart them so much
"you're all programmed to feel this way, to live another day, within a world, that loves to suffer" suffer
linkin park-hybrid theory: ok, way before the overplayed days, these guys wrote some good stuff
"then with the eyes shut
lookin through the rust
and rotten dust, a small spot of light floods the floor
and pours over the rusted world of pretend
and the eyes ease open and its dark again" forgotton
tenacious D-tenacious D: this album is a favorite of mine just because of how silly it is. and sexycakes likes silly
"i love you baby,
but all i can think about is
kielbasa sausage
your buttcheeks is warm" kielbasa
The cure-Disinigration: Awsome lyrics ruined by hour long intros.
"and i feel like ive been eaten by a thousand million shivering holes" lullaby
Franz Ferdinand-s/t: some great lyrics in this one. come on home is the BEST
"i kinda find a like a life this lonely
it rips and peirces me
in places i cant see
i love the rip of nerves
the rip that wakes me" come on home
Slipknot-vol. 3 the subliminal verses: totally owns anything they've ever done
"She seemed dressed in all of me
streched across my shame
all the torment and the pain
leeked through and covered me" vermillion pt 2
cold-year of the spider: wasted years is a ****ing masterpeice
"was it life i betrayed
for the shape that im in?
its not hard to fail
its not easy to win
did i drink too much?
could i dissapear?
and there's nothing thats left
but wasted years" wasted years
no particular order, for kudos, guess who my favorite is

Nirvana - in Utero/Nevermind
Soundgarden - Superunknown/Badmotorfinger
Greenday - American Idiot
Metallica - master of Puppets
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Weezer - The Blue Album/Pinkerton
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath/Paranoid
I know I'm going back a few pages in the thread, but American Idiot, good lyrics, you're joking, right?
I mean, sure there are a few very good lyrical songs on this album, but the song it's titled after is just a catchy melody with random, stupid lyrics, such as:
"Well maybe I'm the f@ggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia."
Although from a different standpoint, there are other songs with very well written lyrics, such as:
"She's an Extraordinary girl
In an ordinary world
And she cant seem to get away
He lacks the courage in his mind
Like a child left behind
Like a pet left in the rain
She's all alone again
Wiping the tears from her eyes
Some days he feels like dying
She gets so sick of crying."
Although there are a few good lyrical songs on this album, overall, it's just more of a catchy album in my opinion. If you're looking for a good lyrical Green Day album I'd say either Nimrod or Insomniac.

god this is difficult... let me think -
the smiths - the queen is dead (almost a king)
bright eyes - fevers and mirrors (come on, this man is my joint favourite lyricist :see above: )
bright eyes - LIFTED or, the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground (...)
the beatles - rubber soul
dashboard confessional - the places you have come to fear the most (if not just for 'again i go unnoticed' - that song is one of my all time favourites)
death cab for cutie - Transatlanticism (i fed on this album for months. its sweet)
interpol - turn on the bright lights (i love this album in pretty much every way possible)
coldplay - parachutes (chris martin CAN be a brilliant, sometimes)
the libertines - up the bracket (some of this is genius)
radiohead - OK Computer (my god i almost forgot that, im ashamed of myself :smash: )
anyway, no particular order, and i probably missed things out, but thats it. :smokes contently:

Well, I don't know about my top ten but my favorite album for power lyrics is definately ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL by METALLICA. In my opinion, this is Metallica's darkest album, but I find James' lyrics to be very deep. Especially that of Blackened and One.
