Background
Most of you probably know of these guys and/or have heard them. Les Claypool is considered one of the top electric bassists ever (the only two people I can think of who can even compete with him are/were Jaco Pastorius and Victor Wooten). The songs are interesting, the lyrics humorous (with the exception of American Life), and each member of the band is a master of his craft. Herb is an awesome drummer, with the double bass doing lots of talking. Ler is a quirky, different guitarist who studied with Joe Satriani when he was younger. Ler is one of my favorite guitarists. They're from San Francisco, and became famous in the early '90's, and were the first Interscope Records signing.
It would take a long time to go song by song (seriously, it's about 2 and a half hours worth of footage/music, and 20 songs, with various jams in the songs). I'll tell you what you need to know on a set by set basis. Another thing I must note is that I was at this concert, so for me the DVD may have been enhanced by the fact that I had seen the show in person, and it was the best concert I've seen in my life. The DVD did it justice. Excellent sound quality and presence. THIS MUST BE TURNED UP, AND IS BEST SEEN ON A TV WITH EXTERNAL HIGH QUALITY, HIGH VOLUME STEREO SPEAKERS WITH GREAT BASS RESPONSE.
Set 1 10/10
The DVD begins with Les and Herb playing the intro to Sgt. Baker (many more times than on the CD... but it's live, so deal with it). As soon as Ler joins in and the song goes into full swing, the energy completely entered me. I was sitting in front of my TV headbanging to this stuff. The segue from Sgt. Baker to American Life fits perfectly (as if it were from the CD itself). Les is chicken stepping around the place when he's not singing, and Ler is just rocking out on the other side of the stage. Herb was beating them down like hell. The sound mix is awesome--each instrument has presence you don't usually associate with live concert recordings, let alone DVD's. My Friend Fats is an awesome song, albeit a little drawn out. They jammed in the middle of it, and as I've come to realize, Primus is awesome when they're jamming. Jerry Was A Race Car Driver was exactly what you'd expect it to be. Arguably their most famous song (if you've played the original Tony Hawk game, you've heard clips of this song, as it's on the soundtrack), they went right through it and made me feel all good inside. Last Superpower aka Rapscallion was also good, though it's very similar to Jerry, so you it's sort of difficult to tell if they're just jamming on Jerry unless you're very familiar with Primus' material. My Name is Mud was electric, and the jam in it was also very awesome. And then...Southbound Pachyderm. This might be my favorite Primus song, though I don't know why. I first heard it at this concert (when I went to the concert, I wasn't really familiar with all of Primus' music). Amazing.
Set 2 10/10
Primus' first full length album (and, imo, their best album), performed live on your TV screen. ****in' incredible. Ler truly shines on this set, and Herb's drum solo is friggin' amazing! Highlights: Harold of the Rocks (Ler busts out some twisted blues), Speghetti Western (inc. Herb's solo), Groundhog's Day (there's a jam)... and the list could go on. Nothing short of stellar!
Encore 8/10
The Pressman just isn't one of my favorite songs by any means. They performed it well, but I had been hoping for something off of Tales or Sailing the Seas. Alternatives could have been: Tweekers, Tommy the Cat, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, Mrs. Blaileen, etc. Still good, but it's an encore, so you can't expect the world and a woman on a plate in front of you. Everyone's tired at this point.
Overall: 10+/10. Seriously, considering the price (<$12.00 on Amazon), this is the very best concert DVD you could get. Hell, I think it's worth it at $25.00. It has no other special features. You get just the concert. It's more than worth it.
Primus is the best live rock act I've ever seen. To give you an idea, here are the bands I've seen live:
Jethro Tull
Pearl Jam
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Local H
Phish (x2... OVERRATED!)
Primus
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (aka C2B3--awesome show, but the lights at the Primus show are what made the difference).
Weezer
Agnostic Front (80's NY Hardcore band).
The only concert that even compared to the Primus concert was the Colonel Claypool concert. Primus and C2B3 are awesome music and awesome showmanship. RHCP was good, except they didn't play much old music, so the music end was lacking. Pearl Jam lacks the energy they had back in their day. Weezer relies on pyrotechnics and have no talent. Tull was amazing considering how old they are (I saw them in '01). Phish are overrated. They have the music end, but not the showmanship. Personally I think they're just hyped up by a bunch of wannabe hippies.
